Integrated Design Optimization of a 5-DOF Assistive Light-weight Anthropomorphic Arm

2011

An integrated dimensional and drive train optimization method was developed for light-weight robotic arm design. The method deals with the determination of optimal link lengths and the optimal selection of motors and gearboxes from commercially available components. Constraints are formulated on the basis of kinematic performance and dynamic requirements, whereas the main objective is to minimize the weight. The design of a human-like arm, which is 10 kg in weight with a load capacity of 5 kg, is described. SEAI: Social Emotional Artificial Intelligence Based on Damasio’s Theory of Mind

2018

A socially intelligent robot must be capable to extract meaningful information in real-time from the social environment and react accordingly with coherent human-like behaviour. Moreover, it should be able to internalise this information, to reason on it at a higher abstract level, build its own opinions independently and then automatically bias the decision-making according to its unique experience. In the last decades, neuroscience research highlighted the link between the evolution of such complex behaviour and the evolution of a certain level of consciousness, which cannot leave out of a body that feels emotions as discriminants and prompters. In order to develop cognitive systems for s…

Social Acceptance of a Teleoperated Android: Field Study on Elderly’s Engagement with an Embodied Communication Medium in Denmark

2012

We explored the potential of teleoperated android robots, which are embodied telecommunication media with humanlike appearances, and how they affect people in the real world when they are employed to express a telepresence and a sense of 'being there'. In Denmark, our exploratory study focused on the social aspects of Telenoid, a teleoperated android, which might facilitate communication between senior citizens and Telenoid's operator. After applying it to the elderly in their homes, we found that the elderly assumed positive attitudes toward Telenoid, and their positivity and strong attachment to its huggable minimalistic human design were cross-culturally shared in Denmark and Japan. Sing with the Telenoid

2012

We introduce a novel research proposal project aimed to build a robotic setup in which the Telenoid learns to improvise jazz singing in a duet with a human singer. In the proposed application, the Telenoid acts in teleoperated mode during the learning phase, while it becomes more and more autonomous during the working phase. A goal of the research is to investigate the essence of human communication which is based on gestures and prosody. We will employ an architecture for imitation learning that incrementally learns from demonstrations sequences of internal model activations, based on the idea of coupled forward- inverse internal models for representing musical phrases and the body sequenc…

Emotions in a cognitive architecture for human robot interactions

2004

A robot architecture is proposed in which cognitive models of emotions are modelled in terms of conceptual spaces. The architecture has been implemented in a anthropomorphic robotic hand system. Experimental results are described related to an experimental setup in which the robot system plays Rock Paper Scissor against a human opponent Copyright © 2004, American Association for Artificial Intelligence (www.aaai.org).

Intérêt en EHPAD du robot émotionnel Pepper dans les troubles neurocomportementaux de la maladie d’Alzheimer

2021

International audience; Can geriatric technologies really be effective among elderly people with Alzheimer's dementia and living in institutions? Our controlled, randomized, single-blind, comparative study attempted to answer this question. The study was conducted in two nursing homes among 31 subjects with an average age of 79.4 ± 6.9, and an average MMSE score of 12.2 ± 3.6. The results show that the Pepper robot, compared to a soft toy, is capable not only of entertaining, but above all of inducing qualitative and quantitative clinical effects. During the 20-minute sessions, a decrease in apathy was observed with Pepper (6.7 ± 6.5 min vs. 18.4 ± 3.8 min, P < 0.001), a decrease in ambulat…

Are robots in rich countries a threat for employment in emerging economies?

2022

The effects of robotization on labor market outcomes have been widely investigated within developed countries. Conversely, few studies have tried to assess how automation in advanced economies affects less industrialized countries. In this work, we analyze the impact of robotization in a group of developed European countries (EU15) on employment dynamics in a country-industry panel data of emerging markets. Our findings indicate that EU15 robotization is associated with a decline of sectoral employment in emerging economies, especially in Asia, tradable and more robotized industries. Ultimately, a small set of major European countries - namely, Germany, Italy, Denmark and United Kingdom - s…

Early Endometrial Cancer. Case-control study to evaluate the efficacy and safety of the new Robotic Single-site System

Objective: To compare surgical and cosmetic outcomes of robotic single-site (RSS) versus robotic multiport (RMP) approaches in early stage endometrial cancer. Methods: This is a perspective case-control study, comparing perioperative and early post-operative outcomes in RSS (cases) and RMP (controls) patients with early stage endometrial cancer. Clinical data including patient's demographics and peri-operative measures were recorded. Complications, hospital stay and post-operative pain were also considered. Cosmetic result was evaluated with Patient and Observer Scar Assessment Scale (POSAS). Results: A total of 15 women who underwent RSS were matched with 13 controls treated by RMP. No sig…

Information as an essential link between natural science and human science : main focus : the impact of information on the functioning and behaviour …

2016

This thesis aims at considering the information as essential link between the sciences of the nature and the human sciences. It is mainly refered to principles of the natural science, allied in a set of scientific stemming approaches, in particular, theories of the complexity, of chaos, of information, auto-organization, emergences and ecosystems. The laws of the thermodynamics play a central role in this context, where the organization and the negentropy make directly part of the field of information production. There is in particular refered to Law of maximization of entropy Production (or, in other words, of energy dissipation), among which the incidence on the functioning and the behavi…

Robot Shift from Industrial Production to Social Reproduction

2015

This chapter analyses people’s attitudes towards the use of robots in the different domains of life and, specifically, in the domain of social reproduction. The analysis is based on Eurobarometer 382 “Public Attitudes towards Robots” data (N = 26,751), which was carried out among EU citizens aged 15 and over in 27 member states in 2012. The results of the study show that on average European perceptions of robots are positive and permissive. The life domains in which robots have already been used for a long time (e.g. space exploration, manufacturing, military and security business, search and rescue work) turn out to be the most popular areas for the further penetration of robots. The least…
