Study of the synergistic interaction between nickel, gold and molybdenum in novel modified NiO/GDC cermets, possible anode materials for CH4 fueled S…
2013
Abstract The present study concerns the structural and physicochemical characterization of novel Au–Mo–NiO/GDC cermets, alongside with measurements of their carbon tolerance. This is an investigation on whether commercially available NiO/GDC powder that is modified with Au and/or Mo can yield possible electrocatalysts as anodes for CH4 fueled SOFCs. Specifically, the performed preparation methods of deposition-precipitation and deposition-coprecipitation permitted the modification of a commercial electrocatalyst and lead to cermets that exhibit different reaction kinetics for the catalytic dissociation of CH4 and different performance for CH4 steam reforming. The most interesting structural…
The Reciprocal Relationship Between Emotions and Agency in the Workplace
2017
In conjunction with a growing interest in professional agency, there is a need to understand how emotions are embedded in agentic practice. This chapter examines the emotions bound up with work and how these emotions are related to professional agency. The subjects of our study were leaders (middle management) and employees working in Finnish education and health-care organisations. A qualitative meta-synthesis was conducted to describe the relationship between professional agency and emotions. The study revealed a variety of emotions, including fear and enjoyment, related to professional identity, work, and social relationships. Among both employees and leaders, emotions were found to play…
QT interval heterogeneities induced through local epicardial warming/cooling. An experimental study
2014
[EN] ntroduction and objectives Abnormal QT interval durations and dispersions have been associated with increased risk of ventricular arrhythmias. The present study examines the possible arrhythmogenic effect of inducing QT interval variations through local epicardial cooling and warming. Methods In 10 isolated rabbit hearts, the temperatures of epicardial regions of the left ventricle were modified in a stepwise manner (from 22 °C to 42 °C) with simultaneous electrogram recording in these regions and in others of the same ventricle. QT and activation-recovery intervals were determined during sinus rhythm, whereas conduction velocity and ventricular arrhythmia induction were determined dur…
Retene, pyrene and phenanthrene cause distinct molecular-level changes in the cardiac tissue of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) larvae, Part 2 – …
2020
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are global contaminants of concern. Despite several decades of research, their mechanisms of toxicity are not very well understood. Early life stages of fish are particularly sensitive with the developing cardiac tissue being a main target of PAHs toxicity. The mechanisms of cardiotoxicity of the three widespread model polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) retene, pyrene and phenanthrene were explored in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) early life stages. Newly hatched larvae were exposed to sublethal doses of each individual PAH causing no detectable morphometric alterations. Changes in the cardiac proteome and metabolome were assessed after 7 o…
Improving the onset potential and Tafel slope determination of earth-abundant water oxidation electrocatalysts
2021
To date, a plethora of electrocatalysts for the Oxygen Evolution Reaction (OER) have been proposed. For evaluating their electrocatalytic behavior the determination of the onset potential in each studied electrolyte is a key parameter. Nevertheless, this evaluation becomes particularly problematic for first- transition metal catalysts as well as by the use of electroactive collectors ( e.g. Ni foams) whose redox peaks overlap the onset potential. A usual solution to detect the onset potential requires the availabil- ity of in-situ mass spectrometric determination of the generated oxygen. In this work, we present fast and easier available cyclic voltammetry and coulovoltammetric responses to…
Natural peptides as scaffold for synthetic antibiofilm and antimicrobial peptides (SAAMPs) useful to control antimicrobial resistance spreading
Assessment of cardiac performance using Tei indices in patients undergoing pulmonary thromboendarterectomy.
2002
This study was designed to evaluate left and right ventricular performance using Tei indices in patients with severe chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension undergoing pulmonary thromboendarterectomy (PTE). The Doppler-derived indices are easily measurable indicators of ventricular function based on nongeometric assessment, which helps overcome some of the difficulties entailed in the geometric assessment of left ventricular (LV) and right ventricular (RV) function in pulmonary hypertension. The indices were derived for 24 patients (aged 54+/-14 years) before and after PTE. Calculation of these indices was based on the duration of two time intervals using the formula (A - B)/B, where A…
Importance of noninvasively measured respiratory muscle overload among the causes of hospital readmission of COPD patients.
2008
To evaluate the influence of respiratory muscle overload and right cardiac overload among the possible risk factors of hospital readmission in a 1-year follow-up of a cohort of patients with moderate-to-severe COPD.A total of 112 COPD patients who were admitted consecutively to the hospital for acute exacerbation. At hospital discharge, we evaluated the conventional clinical and functional determinations in addition to the pressure-time index (PTI), which is obtained using the equation PTI = (Pawo/Pimax) x (Ti/Ttot) x 100, where Pawo represents the mean airway pressure measured at the mouth during spontaneous breathing, Pimax is the maximal inspiratory pressure, Ti is the inspiratory time, …
Patterns and diagnostic value of cardiac troponin I vs. troponin T and CKMB after OPCAB surgery.
2001
Cardiac troponin I (cTnI) has been shown to be a specific marker for myocardial injury in cardiac surgery. The object of this prospective study was to determine the patterns and kinetic and diagnostic value of cTnI, cardiac troponin T (cTnT), and creatine kinase MB (CKMB) activity after minimally invasive coronary revascularization using an octopus device on the beating heart (OPCAB).48 patients (33 male/15 female, mean age 68.3 +/- 8.7 years) underwent their first elective OPCAB surgery with median sternotomy without mortality. The mean number of grafts was 2.0 +/- 0.8 per patient. Preoperative mean ejection fraction was 56.6 % +/- 14.9%. CTnI and T levels, total creatine kinase (CK) and C…
Low-energy epicardial pacing in children: the benefit of autocapture.
1999
Abstract Background . Permanent cardiac pacing in children results commonly in augmented energy consumption because of the high pacing rates and the ample stimulation safety margin applied in children. Cardiovascular anatomy and limited venous access sometimes preclude the otherwise preferred endocardial approach. In this multicenter patient series, we studied the feasibility, safety, and energy saving obtained by a combination of steroid-eluting epicardial leads with autocapture devices capable of ongoing adjustment of the stimulation output to the prevailing threshold. Methods . Autocapture devices (Pacesetter Microny SR+ and Regency SR+; Pacesetter, Solna, Sweden) and steroid-eluting epi…
