Changes in surface stress, morphology and chemical composition of silica and silicon nitride surfaces during the etching by gaseous HF acid
2007
International audience; HF acid attack of SiO2 and Si3N4 substrates is analyzed to improve the sensitivity of a sensor based on inicrocantilever. Ex situ analysis of the etching using XPS, SIMS and AFM show significant changes in the anisotropy and the rate of the etching of the oxides on SiO2 and Si3N4 surface. Those differences influence the kinetic evolution of the plastic bending deflection of the cantilever coated with SiO2 and Si3N4 layer, respectively. The linear dependence between the HF concentration and the Si3N4 cantilever bending corresponds to a deep attack of the layer whereas the nonlinear behavior observed for SiO2 layer can be explained by a combination of deep and lateral …
Trophic role of marbled crayfish in a lentic freshwater ecosystem
2019
Species’ introductions may cause severe adverse effects on freshwater ecosystems and their biota. The marbled crayfish, Procambarus virginalis Lyko, 2017, is an invasive parthenogenetically reproducing crayfish with rapid reproduction, maturation and tolerance to a wide range of environmental conditions, which was introduced to many sites across Europe during the last decade. Due to its recent speciation and limited number of field studies, the knowledge of trophic interactions of the marbled crayfish in freshwater food webs is scarce. An invaded area located in Central Europe was studied to identify the marbled crayfish food web interactions using analysis of carbon 13 C and nitrogen 15N i…
Retene, pyrene and phenanthrene cause distinct molecular-level changes in the cardiac tissue of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) larvae, part 1 – …
2020
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are contaminants of concern that impact every sphere of the environment. Despite several decades of research, their mechanisms of toxicity are still poorly understood. This study explores the mechanisms of cardiotoxicity of the three widespread model PAHs retene, pyrene and phenanthrene in the rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) early life stages. Newly hatched larvae were exposed to each individual compound at sublethal doses causing no significant increase in the prevalence of deformities. Changes in the cardiac transcriptome were assessed after 1, 3, 7 and 14 days of exposure using custom Salmo salar microarrays. The highest number of differentiall…
A Complete Description and Conservation Assessment of Riella affinis Howe & Underwood (Riellaceae, Sphaerocarpales) New to Continental Europe
2019
Riella affinis Howe & Underwood is a rare species that is thus far known from eight populations worldwide. Only half of these were recorded in the last 50 years and none were recollected since first reported. Study of a Spanish population of R. cossoniana Trab., recorded in 2002 from Las Lomas, Malaga province, revealed that it belongs to R. affinis. The correct identity of the populations, which had not been available for study, was already suggested by reproductive and ecological characteristics of the plants mentioned in the original publication. The three main lagoons from the Las Lomas endorheic system, where the plants had been recorded, were sampled and living plants of R. affinis we…
Antibiotic Treatment According to Procalcitonin and C- Reactive Protein Levels
2021
Abstract Respiratory tract infections are the most common infections find at pediatric age. Children with lower respiratory tract infections can presents severe forms, which is why early diagnosis and treatment are essential. Choosing the therapy is made according to the etiology, but at the time of admission it is difficult to establish the etiology of the disease and for this reason, most often, it is decided to initiate the antibiotic therapy. Excessive antibiotic prescription, in cases that it is not justified, is really a problem because it contributes to the increase of antimicrobial resistance. A study was conducted in order to limit the hypothesis of prolonged antibiotic therapy, wh…
Synthetic/ECM-inspired hybrid platform for hollow microcarriers with ROS-triggered nanoporation hallmarks
2017
Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are key pathological signals expressed in inflammatory diseases such as cancer, ischemic conditions and atherosclerosis. An ideal drug delivery system should not only be responsive to these signals but also should not elicit an unfavourable host response. This study presents an innovative platform for drug delivery where a natural/synthetic composite system composed of collagen type I and a synthesized polythioether, ensures a dual stimuli-responsive behaviour. Collagen type I is an extracellular matrix constituent protein, responsive to matrix metalloproteinases (MMP) cleavage per se. Polythioethers are stable synthetic polymers characterized by the presence o…
Blue biotechnology: enhancement of bioremediation using bacterial biofilms on biodegradable scaffolds
2016
Petroleum hydrocarbons are still the most threatening environmental pollutants. A promising non invasive and low-cost technology for the treatment of contaminated sites is based on bioremediation by biodegrading microorganism endowed with catabolic ability towards oil and derivatives. New methods are needed to enhance and optimize natural biodegradation, such as the immobilization of hydrocarbons degraders in many types of supports. We developed a scaffold-bacteria bioremediation system to clean up oil contamination based on degradable 3D scaffolds. The polycaprolactone component is biodegradable, produced in the melt, i.e. at low cost and without the use of toxic solvents. The biofilm is m…
Intravenous Regional Anesthesia
1988
Intravenous regional anesthesia was first described by Bier in 1908. The technique fell into disuse until 1963, when Holmes revived the technique by substituting lidocaine for procaine (see Sect. V. D, “Choice and Dosage of Agents”).
Assessment Of Driving Stress Through SVM And KNN Classifiers On Multi-Domain Physiological Data
2022
We propose an objective stress assessment method based on the extraction of features from physiological time series and their classification using Support Vector Machine and K-Nearest Neighbors algorithms. For this purpose, we used an open dataset consisting of multiparametric physiological signals (electrocardiogram, electromyogram, galvanic skin response and breath signal) obtained during the execution of a driving route within the city of Boston with restful, highway and city driving periods indicative of three different stress states. To predict the driver stress level, 21 features were extracted from 122 chunks of raw signals and were subsequently managed by classification algorithms. …
