TCDD-dependent downregulation of gamma-catenin in rat liver epithelial cells (WB-F344).

TCDD (2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin) is the most potent tumor promoter ever tested in rodents. Although it is known that most of the effects of TCDD are mediated by binding to the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AHR), the mechanisms leading to tumor promotion still remain to be elucidated. Loss of contact-inhibition is a characteristic hallmark in tumorigenesis. In WB-F344 cells, TCDD induces a release from contact-inhibition manifested by a 2- to 3-fold increase in DNA-synthesis and the emergence of foci when TCDD (1 nM) is given to confluent cells. Abstract Background This work presents relative survival estimates regarding urinary tract tumours among adult patients (age ⩾ 15 years) diagnosed in Europe. It reports on survival estimates of cases diagnosed in 2000–2007, and on survival time trends from 1999–2001 to 2005–2007. As the frequency of cannabis-based therapy increases, the ability to distinguish intake of cannabis-based medicines from recreational cannabis use becomes desirable. Minor cannabinoids have been suggested to indicate recreational cannabis use in biological matrices but are unreliable when presumably also present in directly plantderived medicines. Identification of Potential Distinguishing Markers for the Use of Cannabis-Based Medicines or Street Cannabis in Serum Samples

Increasing prescription numbers of cannabis-based medicines raise the question of whether uptake of these medicines can be distinguished from recreational cannabis use. In this pilot study, serum cannabinoid profiles after use of cannabis-based medicines were investigated, in order to identify potential distinguishing markers. Canonical versus microcanonical analysis of first-order phase transitions

Abstract I discuss the relation between canonical and microcanonical analyses of first-order phase transitions. In particular it is shown that the microcanonical Maxwell construction is equivalent to the equal-peak-height criterion often employed in canonical simulations. As a consequence the microcanonical finite-size estimators for the transition point, latent heat and interface tension are identical to standard estimators in the canonical ensemble. Special emphasis is placed on various ways for estimating interface tensions. The theoretical considerations are illustrated with numerical data for the two-dimensional 10-state Potts model.

Temperature concepts for small, isolated systems: 1/t decay and radiative cooling

We report on progress in our investigations of cluster cooling. The analysis of measurements is based on introduction of the microcanonical temperature and a statistical description of the decay of an ensemble with a broad distribution in temperature. The resulting time dependence of the decay rate is a power law close to t �1 , replaced by nearly exponential decay after a characteristic time for quenching by radiative cooling. We focus on results obtained for fullerenes, both anions and cations and recently also neutral C60.

Finite-size scaling in a microcanonical ensemble

The finite-size scaling technique is extended to a microcanonical ensemble. As an application, equilibrium magnetic properties of anL×L square lattice Ising model are computed using the microcanonical ensemble simulation technique of Creutz, and the results are analyzed using the microcanonical ensemble finite-size scaling. The computations were done on the multitransputer system of the Condensed Matter Theory Group at the University of Mainz.

We study the properties of model fluids in two spatial dimensions with Gibbs ensemble Monte Carlo (GEMC) techniques. In particular in the first part of the paper we study the entropy driven phase separation in case of a nonadditive symmetric hard disc fluid and locate by a combination of GEMC with finite size scaling techniques the critical line of nonadditivities as a function of the system density, which separates the mixing/demixing regions, we compare with a simple approximation. Microcantilevers were first introduced as imaging probes in Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) due to their extremely high sensitivity in measuring surface forces. Substituent effect of nitro group on aromaticity of carbazole rings

The molecular geometries of carbazole and its 17 nitro derivatives were optimized at the B3LYP/6-311++G(2d,2p) level of theory. The harmonic oscillator model of aromaticity and nucleus-independent chemical shift descriptors of π-electron delocalization were calculated to estimate the aromaticity of the carbazole five- and six-membered rings. The biggest changes in the value of both descriptors were observed for the pyrrole ring. The nitro group attached to 3 and/or 6 positions of the carbazole ring system exerts only a slight influence on the benzene ring aromaticity.
