Effects of cadmium on the biochemical composition of the freshwater crayfishProcambarus clarkii (Girard, 1852)
1991
Lake Albufera of Valencia (Spain) and the surrounding rice field waters are subjected to very heavy loads of sewage and toxic residues. Among these residues include heavy metals which have been deposited from the many urban and waste waters in this area. The American red crayfish, Procambarus clarkii from Albufera Lake has high resistance to heavy metals. The authors have also found that P. clarkii shows a high capacity for cadmium accumulation in experimental conditions and natural conditions since crayfish collected in this area contained considerable amounts of cadmium in several tissues even after 15 days of depuration in clean water. Since the physiological changes that take place when…
On the Mechanistic Origins of the pH-Dependency in Au-Catalyzed Glycerol Electro-Oxidation: Insight from First Principles Calculations
2021
Electrocatalytic oxidation of glycerol (EOG) is an attractive approach to convert surplus glycerol to value-added products. Experiments have shown that EOG activity and selectivity depend on the electrocatalyst, but also on the electrode potential, the pH, and the electrolyte. For broadly employed gold (Au) electrocatalysts, experiments have demonstrated high EOG activity under alkaline conditions with glyceric acid as a primary product, whereas under acidic and neutral conditions Au is rather inactive producing only small amounts of dihydroxyacetone. In the present computational work, we have performed an extensive mechanistic study to understand the pH- and potential-dependency of Au-cata…
Sweet (hetero)aromatics: glycosylated templates for the construction of saccharide mimetics
2011
Mono- and diglycosylated aromatics and heteroaromatics may serve as building blocks for the construction of metabolically stable mimetics of oligosaccharides. Methods for their preparation from monosaccharidic precursors by direct C-glycosylation, dipolar cycloaddition or Larock cyclization are described.
Effect of artificial shading on the tannin accumulation and aromatic composition of the Grillo cultivar (Vitis vinifera L.)
2013
Abstract Background White wine quality, especially in warm climates, is affected by sunlight and heat stress. These factors increase the probability that ambering processes will occur and reduce the potential flavour compounds. This study aimed to investigate the effect of sunlight reduction on the accumulation of polyphenolic and aromatic compounds. Results This study was conducted in a commercial vineyard containing V. vinifera L. cv Grillo. Opaque polypropylene boxes (100% shading) and high-density polyethylene (HDPE) net bags (50% shading) were applied at fruit set. The effect of the shaded treatments was compared to the exposed fruit treatment. The shaded treatments resulted in heavier…

Clinical Predictors of Immunotolerance in Heart Transplantation
2010
Abstract Background and Aim The drugs routinely administered to prevent rejection often cause lethal side effects. Tolerant patients, therefore, should be identified to minimize these problems. The aim of this analysis was to identify clinical variables that may be associated with tolerance. Methods We recruited 522 heart transplants (HT), excluding combined procedures, retransplantations, pediatric recipients, and subjects who died in the first year to obtain a cohort of 375 patients. Two groups were distinguished by the presence of echocardiographic, clinical, or pathological evidence of rejection in the first year (15 echocardiograms and 10 protocol biopsies per patient); 99 tolerant pat…
Brominated flame retardants and organochlorines in the European environment using great tit eggs as a biomonitoring tool
2009
Large-scale studies are essential to assess the emission patterns and spatial distribution of organohalogenated pollutants (OHPs) in the environment. Bird eggs have several advantages compared to other environmental media which have previously been used to map the distribution of OHPs. In this study, large-scale geographical variation in the occurrence of OHPs, such as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), was investigated throughout Europe using eggs of a terrestrial residential passerine species, the great tit (Parus major). Great tit eggs from 22 sampling sites, involving urban, rural and remote areas, in 14 Europea…
Guanine 6-O-Methylation Pattern within the Dioxin Responsive Element of theCYP1A1 Enhancer Shows Two Critical Guanines for AhR/ARNT Binding
2006
The core-recognition motif for TCDD-liganded AhR/ARNT complex of the dioxin-responsive element (DRE) contains four guanine residues, three on the antisense (5'-T T / A GCGTG-3') and one on the sense (5'-CACGC A / T A-3') strand. It has been reported that, in methylation-protection and methylation-interference assays, the TCDD-liganded AhR/ARNT contacts all four guanine residues. On the other hand, it is known that some anticancer drugs, and various environmental and workplace chemicals, including strongly human carcinogenic nitrosoamines, lead to the highly miscoding 6-O-methylation of guanine. In the present study, we have investigated whether specific methylation of guanine at the 6-O-pos…
MAP OF 3D DISTRIBUTION OF HYDROCARBONOCLASTIC BACTERIA IN MEDITERRANEAN SEA
2013
The obligate hydrocarbonoclastic bacteria (OHCB) have been recognized and shown to play a significant role in the biological removal of hydrocarbons from polluted marine waters. The introduction of oil or hydrocarbons into seawater leads to successive blooms of a relatively limited number of indigenous marine bacterial genera (Alcanivorax, Marinobacter, Thallassolituus, Cycloclasticus and Oleispira) which are present at low or undetectable levels before the polluting event. The types of OHCB that bloom depend directly from level and type of pollution and from parameters as the latitude/temperature, salinity, redox etc.... In this work, using data present in GeneBank we have create a virtual…
