Adsorption of gelatin during electrodeposition of copper and tin-copper alloys from acid sulfate electrolyte

2014

International audience; An acid Cu–Sn deposition bath was developed, and copper and copper–tin coatings were electrodeposited on polycrystalline platinum. The effect of gelatin on copper and copper–tin electrodeposition from acid sulfate solutions has been investigated by a variety of electrochemical methods (voltammetric studies and electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance) as well as by morphologic technique (scanning electron microscopy). The electrochemical results have shown that the overpotential is required when gelatin is added, indicating the presence of interaction between the additive and the coating. From the results of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, PM-IRRAS and cyclic vo…

Tuning the Electrochemistry of Free-Base Porphyrins in Acidic Nonaqueous Media: Influence of Solvent, Supporting Electrolyte, and Ring Substituents

2016

International audience; A detailed study of reduction potentials, electroreduction mechanisms and acid-base chemistry was carried out on two series of free-base porphyrins in nonaqueous media. The first series is represented by four-pyrrole substituted tetraphenylporphyrin (TPP) derivatives, two of which are planar and two of which are nonplanar in their non-protonated form. The second comprises porphyrins with 0-4 meso-phenyl groups on the macrocycle. Equilibrium constants for conversion of each neutral porphyrin to its diprotic [H4P] 2+ form were determined and the electrochemistry was then elucidated as a function of: (i) type of nonaqueous solvent, (ii) anion of supporting electrolyte, …

In Situ Synthesis of Polythiophene and Silver Nanoparticles within a PMMA Matrix: A Nanocomposite Approach to Thermoelectrics

2022

The processability of organic thermoelectric materials plays a crucial role due to their clear advantages of applicability in large-scale areas compared to traditional inorganic counterparts. A promising way to process thermoelectric materials based on conductive polymers is through in situ polymerization in an insulating polymer matrix. This work shows an interpenetrating polymeric network based on polythiophene, silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs), and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) produced by the oxidative polymerization of terthiophene by an oxidizing silver salt in a PMMA matrix. Ag NPs are in situ synthesized simultaneously as a byproduct. The reaction occurs very fast in the solid state…

A new application for nickel foam in alkaline fuel cells

2009

The use of nickel foam as an electrode substrate in alkaline fuel cells (AFCs) has been investigated for bi-polar cells incorporating an electrically conducting gas diffusion layer. This contribution focuses on the cathode, and draws comparisons between nickel foam and nickel mesh substrates. One of the principal electrocatalysts for the cathodic reduction of oxygen is silver, so an improvement in electrochemical performance was obtained by electroplating the nickel foam with silver. The electrodeposition process was optimised to maximise electrochemical performance with a minimum of silver deposited. Nickel foam, which is less expensive than the usual nickel mesh, appears to be a good subs…

Electrochemical characterization of cobalt cordierites attached to paraffin-impregnated graphite electrodes

2004

The electrochemistry of α, β and μ cobalt-containing cordierites (Co2Al4Si5O18) attached to paraffin-impregnated graphite electrodes has been studied by linear scan and cyclic voltammetries in HCl+NaCl and NaOH electrolytes. This electrochemistry is compared with that of vitreous cobalt cordierite, cobalt(II) oxide and cobalt spinel aluminate (CoAl2O4), the two last taken as reference materials. Electrochemical processes involve the site-characteristic reduction of Co(II) species to cobalt metal near to −0.5 V vs. SCE and their oxidative dissolution near +0.3 V, accompanied by solid state interconversion between Co(II) and Co(III) at potentials above +0.45 V. Cordierite-modified electrodes …

Multi-channel receptors based on thiopyrylium functionalised with macrocyclic receptors for the recognition of transition metal cations and anions.

2010

We report herein the synthesis and characterization of a family of ligands containing different cation binding sites covalently connected to a thiopyrylium signalling reporter. The receptors L1–L6 are able to signal the presence of certain metal cations via three different channels; i.e. electrochemically, fluorogenically and chromogenically. An acetonitrile solution of L1–L6 shows a bright blue colour due to a charge-transfer band in the 575–585 nm region. The colour variation in acetonitrile of L1–L6 in the presence of the metal cations Ag+, Cd2+, Cu2+, Fe3+, Hg2+, Ni2+, Pb2+ and Zn2+ has been studied. A selective hypsochromic shift of the blue band was found for the systems L4-Pb2+ and L…

The reduction of molecular oxygen by iron porphyrins

2002

Abstract Molecular assemblies have been synthesised to reproduce the structure of the cytochrome c oxidase (C c O) active site and to explore the roles played by its different features. It was discovered that a single iron porphyrin, adsorbed at the surface of a graphite electrode, is a selective catalyst for the four-electron reduction of dioxygen to water, at pH 7. Synthesis, Characterization, and Cu(2+) Coordination Studies of a 3-Hydroxy-4-pyridinone Aza Scorpiand Derivative.

2016

The synthesis, acid-base behavior, and Cu(2+) coordination chemistry of a new ligand (L1) consisting of an azamacrocyclic core appended with a lateral chain containing a 3-hydroxy-2-methyl-4(1H)-pyridinone group have been studied by potentiometry, cyclic voltammetry, and NMR and UV-vis spectroscopy. UV-vis and NMR studies showed that phenolate group was protonated at the highest pH values [log K = 9.72(1)]. Potentiometric studies point out the formation of Cu(2+) complexes of 1:2, 2:2, 4:3, 1:1, and 2:1 Cu(2+)/L1 stoichiometries. UV-vis analysis and electrochemical studies evidence the implication of the pyridinone moieties in the metal coordination of the 1:2 Cu(2+)/L1 complexes. L1 shows …
