A plant sociological approach for extensive green roofs in Mediterranean areas

2013

Extensive Green roofs can be an important mean for environmental mitigation if designed according to the principles of restoration ecology. Moreover, if optimally executed, properly managed and of sufficient extension, they could be assimilated to meta-populations of natural habitats, worth to be included in the biodiversity monitoring networks. The best example supporting this hypothesis is the Lake water plant Moos in Wollishofen (Zurich, Switzerland) where, on three 100 years old units of extensive green roofs, occur most of the typical flora of Mesobromion, including high density of some endangered orchid species. With this work, we propose a methodology approach for green roofs in Medi…

Genesi geometrica delle volte centriche

1996

A comprehensive analysis of vaulted bodies involves the study of the multiple components necessary for their definition: geometric configuration construction system historical-geographical area of belonging interpretations Stylistic. The objective of this study is directed to the 'analysis of continuous vaults on a centric plan definable through the laws of Euclidean geometry. The investigation arises within the boundaries related to their geometric configuration and the criterion adopted freed from typological or stylistic classifications proposes the identification of geometric families based on the figure of the basic polygon of the plant. An ordering process can be identified to explain the compositional process of curved-roofed central plants: that is the elaboration of a series of theoretical models developed according to an abacus referring to the basic geometries of the triangle square and pentagon is possible. It is not intended to impose a classification but to propose a study tool that thanks to a few simple compositional rules develops a very large number of configurationthe question remains as to why only a part has been used for the realization of vaulted covered centric buildings but this presumes considerations of a historical formal and constructive nature extraneous to this discussion.Settore ICAR/17 - Disegno

Technical Note: Prediction Models of Airborne Sound Insulation of Multilayer Materials with Viscoelastic Thin Sheets

2008

The growing introduction of new insulation materials in building acoustics has caused an increase of the importance of the prediction tools. Appropriate simulations allow strictly necessary laboratory measurements to be identified. In this way, costs are reduced. The demands of new legislation has resulted in the appearance of various software designed to facilitate prediction. The prediction models are based on different hypotheses: adaptation of impedances, spatial behaviour of spectral components, statistical energy distribution, the Finite Element Method (FEM), etc. Each of these models and methods offer advantages and contain limitations. In this paper, different models for prediction…

A Novel Anti-CD40 Monoclonal Antibody, Iscalimab, for Control of Graves Hyperthyroidism—A Proof-of-Concept Trial

2019

Abstract Context The CD40-CD154 co-stimulatory pathway plays an important role in the pathogenesis of Graves disease (GD) by promoting autoreactive B-cell activation. Objective Evaluate efficacy and safety of a human, blocking, nondepleting anti-CD40 monoclonal antibody, iscalimab, in hyperthyroid patients with GD. Design Open-label, phase II proof-of-concept study. Setting Multicenter. Patients Fifteen with GD. Intervention Patients received 5 doses of iscalimab at 10 mg/kg intravenously over 12 weeks. Main outcome measures Thyroid-related hormones and autoantibodies, plasma soluble CD40, free CD40 on B cells, soluble CXCL13, pharmacokinetics, and safety were assessed. Results The iscalima…

Multimodal Device for Real-Time Monitoring of Skin Oxygen Saturation and Microcirculation Function

2019

The present study introduces a recently developed compact hybrid device for real-time monitoring of skin oxygen saturation and temperature distribution. The prototype involves a snapshot hyperspectral camera, multi-wavelength illuminator, thermal camera, and built-in computer with custom-developed software. To validate this device in-vivo we performed upper arm vascular occlusion on eight healthy volunteers. Palm skin oxygen saturation maps were analyzed in real-time using k-means segmentation algorithm and two-layer optical diffuse model. The prototype system demonstrated a satisfying performance of skin hyperspectral measurements in the spectral range of 507&ndash

Experimental characterization of variable-speed packaged rooftop units in presence of evaporator fouling

2022

Variable-speed packaged rooftop units have been increasingly adopted in the commercial sector. If not properly maintained, the fouling of heat exchangers and the improper refrigerant charge could increase energy consumption. In this work, the response of variable-speed rooftop units to evaporator fouling is investigated based on experiments on a variable-speed 17.5 kW rooftop unit. A novel testing procedure is proposed, aimed at covering a broad range of operating conditions by a reduced number of tests. Two opposite cases were investigated: (i) even in presence of fouling, the controller can restore the required cooling capacity, and (ii) the intensity of the fouling does not allow the con…

Kollineationen und Schliessungssätze für Ebene Faserungen

1979

Every affine central collineation of a translation plane π induces a special collineation of the projective space π spanned by the spreadF belonging to π. Here the relations between these special collineations of π and certain incidence propositions inF are investigated; so new proofs are given for some characterisations of (A,B)-regular spreads included in [7].

The temnospondyl amphibian Cyclotosaurus from the Upper Triassic of Poland

2005

A gap in the Late Triassic fossil record of the capitosaur amphibian Cyclotosaurus is filled by new material from lacustrine deposits at Krasiejow, Poland, corresponding in age to the Lehrberg Beds (late Carnian) of Germany. The skull of the Polish cyclotosaur is intermediate in several respects between that of Cyclotosaurus robustus from the middle Carnian Schilfsandstein of Germany and the younger C. mordax from the early Norian Stubensandstein. It shows a decrease in the width of the skull and in the degree of con- cavity of the posterior margin of the skull roof. The differ- ences are significant enough to warrant erection of a novel species, the name Cyclotosaurus intermedius sp. nov. …

Archaeometric analysis of building ceramics and ‘dolia defossa’ from the Roman Imperial estate of Vagnari (Gravina in Puglia, Italy)

2021

Abstract This paper concerns the archaeometric analysis of ceramic finds dating to the Roman Imperial period, brought to light during the excavation campaigns conducted at Vagnari (Puglia) in south-east Italy. On the site of the central village (vicus) of this imperial estate, established by the Roman Emperor in the early 1st century CE, large dolia (wine vats) sunk into the floor of a winery of the 2nd century CE recently were brought to light. Other discoveries include kilns for the production of ceramic roof tiles and also kiln wasters such as misfired tiles. The purpose of the analytical approach was therefore twofold: 1) to establish the composition of local ceramic products and of raw…
