Convergence in car prices among European countries

2011

This article contributes to the literature on price convergence in Europe by investigating the existence of stochastic and deterministic convergence of car prices in the EU15 countries. We apply recently developed econometric techniques that allow for multiple structural breaks to an up-to-date dataset. We find considerable evidence of both types of convergence in our sample of countries and car models, therefore suggesting a tendency for relative prices to equalize over time. In addition, we find evidence regarding the importance in this convergence process of both legislative changes taking place in the years 1996 and 2002, and the implementation of Economic and Monetary Union (EMU).

Preliminary results on direct quantitative determination of cocaine in impregnated materials by infrared spectroscopy

2018

Abstract Partial least squares models were built for the direct determination of cocaine in seized impregnated smuggled materials. Measurements are based on the attenuated total reflectance middle infrared spectra (ATR-MIR) and diffuse reflectance spectra in the near range (DR-NIR) obtained directly from the surface of the impregnated materials. The aforementioned procedures offer fast, cheap and environmentally friendly green alternatives to the reference method based on the extraction of the drug and its quantification by gas chromatography. Additionally it has been verified that results found are statistically comparable with those obtained by the reference method with root mean square e…

Anin vitroendodontic model to quantify the accessory canal filling potential of the vertical and lateral condensation techniques

2021

The purpose of this study was to determine the accessory canal filling potential of vertical and lateral condensation techniques in simulated root canals. A total of 130 prepared transparent, straight-simulated root canals with nine accessory canals (0.02 mm), prepared at different levels from the apical, were obturated with vertical (n = 100) and 30 lateral condensation (n = 30) techniques. 50.33% of the accessory canals obturated with vertical condensation were completely filled with gutta-percha; 37.78% completely filled with gutta-percha and sealer. 61.11% of the accessory canals were completely filled with sealer only using the lateral condensation technique. The vertical condensation …

Assessment of root canal enlargement using Mtwo and BioRace rotary files.

2014

Objective. To evaluate root canal enlargement following mechanical shaping using 2 nickel titanium rotary systems.Material and Methods. Forty single-rooted teeth were immersed in resin and sectioned perpendicular to the long axis at 4, 8, and 12 mm from the apex. Digital capture of sections was performed before and after canal instrumentation using Mtwo and BioRace instruments. The area increase of endodontic space was calculated by subtraction.Results. The use of both instruments has allowed the removal of great amounts of dentin from the canal walls, even when the endodontic morphology is characterized by awkwardness to reach recesses.Conclusions. Both procedures seem to be valid and no d…

Cytotoxicity of Root Canal Filling Materials to Three Different Human Cell Lines

2001

The aim of this study was to investigate the biological compatibility of five root canal sealers (Sealapex, Endion, Super-EBA, Ketac-Endo, and AH Plus) and regular and calcium hydroxide-based gutta-percha in three different human cell lines. Cultures without root canal sealers were used as controls. Cell growth, cell morphology, cell viability, protein content of the cells, and prostaglandin E 2 (PGE 2 ) release were used as parameters to determine the cytotoxicity of the materials. The protein content of the three cell lines—nasal fibroblasts, gingival fibroblasts, and epithelial tumor cells—was significantly reduced (p ≤ 0.001) by all materials tested. Determinations of PGE 2 release show…

Acoustic Emission-Based Condition Monitoring and Remaining Useful Life Prediction of Hydraulic Cylinder Rod Seals

2021

The foremost reason for unscheduled maintenance of hydraulic cylinders in industry is caused by wear of the hydraulic seals. Therefore, condition monitoring and subsequent estimation of remaining useful life (RUL) methods are highly sought after by the maintenance professionals. This study aimed at investigating the use of acoustic emission (AE) sensors to identify the early stages of external leakage initiation in hydraulic cylinders through run to failure studies (RTF) in a test rig. In this study, the impact of sensor location and rod speeds on the AE signal were investigated using both time- and frequency-based features. Furthermore, a frequency domain analysis was conducted to investig…

Influence of cavity preparation technique (rotary vs. ultrasonic) on microleakage and marginal fit of six end-root filling materials

2010

Objectives: To evaluate in vitro the effect of cavity preparation with microburs and diamond-coated ultrasonic tips on the microleakage and marginal fit of six end-root filling materials. Study Design. The following materials were assessed: amalgam (Amalcap), zinc oxide eugenol (IRM), glass ionomer (Vitrebond), compomer (Cavalite), mineral particle aggregate (MTA) and composite (Clearfil). Cavity preparation was performed with microburs or diamond ultrasonic tips in single-root teeth. The seal was evaluated in two experiments: a microleakage assay on the passage of dye to the interface; and a scanning electron microscopy study and analysis of epoxy resin replicas, measuring the size of gaps…

Influence of oxygen ion elementary diffusion jumps on the electron current through the conductive filament in yttria stabilized zirconia nanometer-si…

2021

Abstract The structure of the electron current through an individual filament of a nanometer-sized virtual memristor consisting of a contact of a conductive atomic force microscope probe to an yttria stabilized zirconia (YSZ) thin film deposited on a conductive substrate is investigated. Usually, such investigation is performed by the analysis of the waveform of this current with the aim to extract the random telegraph noise (RTN). Here, we suggest a new indirect method, which is based on the measurement of the spectrum of the low-frequency flicker noise in this current without extracting the RTN, taking into account the geometrical parameters of the filament. We propose that the flicker no…

In vivo and in vitro effects of an Er:YAG laser, a GaAlAs diode laser, and scaling and root planing on periodontally diseased root surfaces: A compar…

2003

Background and Objectives The aim of the present histologic study was to compare the in vivo and in vitro effects of an erbium: yttrium, aluminum, and garnet (Er:YAG) laser (ERL), combined with a fluorescent calculus detection system, a diode laser (DL) and scaling and root planing (SRP) on periodontally diseased root surfaces. Study Design/Materials and Methods Twenty-four single rooted teeth, considered for extraction due to severe periodontal destruction, were included in the study. Prior to extraction all mesial root surfaces were randomly assigned to the following treatment groups: (1) ERL combined with a calculus detection system with fluorescence induced by 655 nm InGaAsP DL radiatio…

Effect of bleaching agents on sealing properties of different intraorifice barriers and root filling materials

2012

Objective: To evaluate the effect of intracoronal bleaching agents on the sealing properties of different intraorifice barriers and root filling materials. Study Design: The root canals of extracted human premolars (n=180) were prepared by using System GT rotary files and filled with either gutta-percha+AH Plus or Resilon+Epiphany sealer. In both groups, the coronal 3mm of root filling was removed and replaced with one of the following materials applied as intraorifice barriers (n=30/group): 1. ProProot-MTA; 2. Conventional Glass ionomer cement; and 3. Hybrid resin composite. In each subgroup, intracoronal bleaching was performed using either sodium perborate with distilled water or 35% hyd…
