Effect of Electrical Stimulation on Denervated Muscle

1986

The possibilities of noninvasive treatment in peripheral nerve injuries are limited. Although it is well known that the severance of a nerve results in paralysis of the dependent tissue, the methods of treating a denervated muscle are still controversial. The most obvious result of denervation is muscle atrophy and paralysis. In 1841 Reid forced the denervated muscle to contract by electrical stimulation to replace the loss of activity and observed that this treatment retarded atrophy. Since then, there has been continuing interest in preventing muscle atrophy with electrotherapy. Peripheral nerve injuries in the two world wars were, for instance, extensively treated with electrical stimula…

Benzothiazolethione complexes of coinage metals: from mononuclear complexes to clusters and polymers

2019

Abstract The reactions of 2(3H)-benzothiazolethione (Hbtt) with [AuCl(tetrahydrothiophene)] and CuBr2 were studied, and found to yield a tetranuclear cluster compound [Au(btt)]4 [1] and a polymeric structure [CuBr(btt-btt)]n.nTHF (2). Crystallographic and spectroscopic methods were used for the characterization. In 1, the monoanionic ligand acted as a bidentate bridging N,S-donor giving a molecular cluster structure of an asymmetric coordination isomer. In the formation of 2, the ligand was dimerized by forming a S–S bond after deprotonation, and coordination via nitrogen donors to metal atoms took place leading to a polymeric structure. To clarify the diversity of reactions of Hbtt with co…

Effect of sisal and hydrothermal ageing on the dielectric behaviour of polylactide/sisal biocomposites

2017

[EN] The dielectric properties of virgin polylactide (PLA) and its reinforced composites with different weight amounts of sisal fibres were assessed at broad temperature (from - 130 degrees C to 130 degrees C) and frequency ranges (from 10(-2)-10(7) Hz), before and after being subjected to accelerated hydrothermal ageing. The synergetic effects of both the loading of sisal and hydrothermal ageing were analysed by means of dielectric relaxation spectra. The relaxation time functions were evaluated by the Havriliak-Negami model, substracting the ohmic contribution of conductivity. The intramolecular and intermolecular relaxations were respectively analysed by means of Arrhenius and Vogel-Fulc…

Evaluation and management of hemorrhoids: Italian society of colorectal surgery (SICCR) consensus statement

2015

Hemorrhoids are one of the most common medical and surgical diseases and the main reason for a visit to a coloproctologist. This consensus statement was drawn up by the Italian society of colorectal surgery in order to provide practice parameters for an accurate assessment of the disease and consequent appropriate treatment. The authors made a careful search in the main databases (MEDLINE, PubMed, Embase and Cochrane), and all results were classified on the basis of the grade of recommendation (A-C) of the American College of Chest Physicians.

Facile fabrication of flower like self-assembled mesoporous hierarchical microarchitectures of In(OH)3 and In2O3: In(OH)3 micro flowers with electron…

2016

Abstract A template and capping-reagent free facile fabrication method for mesoporous hierarchical microarchitectures of flower-like In(OH) 3 particles under benign hydrothermal conditions is reported. Calcination of In(OH) 3 to In 2 O 3 with the retention of morphology is also described. Both In(OH) 3 and In 2 O 3 microstructures were analyzed with SEM, EDX, TEM and powder X-ray diffraction. The crystal sizes for In(OH) 3 and In 2 O 3 were calculated using the Scherrer equation. In In(OH) 3 the thin flakes at the periphery of micro flowers were electron beam sensitive. The mechanism of self-assembly process was analyzed as well.

Influence of the pH on the ZnO nanoparticle growth in supercritical water: Experimental and simulation approaches

2014

Abstract In order to improve the knowledge on the nucleation and the growth mechanisms of metal oxides nanoparticles produced in supercritical water domain, ZnO was used as a “model” material. A continuous process of hydrothermal synthesis was employed to synthesize ZnO nanopowders ( T  = 410 °C and P  = 305 bar) from Zn(NO 3 ) 2 and KOH solutions with different values of [KOH]/[Zn(II)] ratio from 0 to 8 in order to investigate the pH effect on the growth of ZnO nanocrystallite in terms of size and morphology. The samples were characterized by X-Ray Diffraction and Transmission Electronic Microscopy. ZnO crystal was considered as a cylindrical crystallite with a diameter D and height H . Es…

Facile Large Scale Synthesis of WS2 Nanotubes from WO3 Nanorods Prepared by a Hydrothermal Route.

2005

Abstract Hexagonal WO 3 nanorods of 5–50 nm in diameter and 150–250 nm in length have been synthesised in gram quantities by a low temperature hydrothermal route using citric acid as a structural modifier and hexadecylamine as a templating agent. The ratio of [A]/[W] play an important role on WO 3 nanorods formation. These WO 3 nanorods were found highly suitable as a precursor for the synthesis of a good yield of multiwalled WS 2 nanotubes by reducing them with H 2 S at 840 °C for 30 min. The length and the wall thickness of the WS 2 nanotubes could be altered by controlled reduction of the oxide precursor. The morphology, structure and the composition of the WO 3 nanorods and WS 2 nanotub…

Experimental and theoretical study to explain the morphology of CaMoO4 crystals

2018

Abstract CaMoO 4 crystals were prepared by a controlled co-precipitation method and processed in a domestic microwave-assisted hydrothermal system with two different surfactants (ethyl 4-dimethylaminobenzoate and 1,2,4,5-benzenetetracarboxylic dianhydride). The corresponding structures were characterized by X-ray diffraction and Rietveld refinement techniques, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, ultraviolet–visible absorption spectroscopy, and photoluminescence measurements. Field emission scanning electron microscopy was used to investigate the morphology of the as-synthesized aggregates. The structure, the surface stability of the (001), (112), (100), (110), (101), and (111) surfaces…

Synthesis of single crystalline sub-micron rutile TiO2 rods using hydrothermal treatment in acidic media

2014

Size engineered rutile sub-micron rods were obtained from nanostructured titania under acidic conditions. The synthesis was performed by hydrothermal treatment starting from TiO2-P25 and HCl. The synthesis proceeds in less than two hours and can be up-scaled to several grams in a one-pot reaction by increasing the reaction time. The product is single-phase, and the particles are single crystalline as confirmed by electron diffraction and powder X-ray diffraction analysis. The length of the particles can be varied over a wide range from 100 nm to 1.3 μm by changing the acid concentration. Particle growth is proposed to proceed by a dissolution-recrystallization process via soluble [TiCl6]2− …
