Source Dipartimento di Discipline Chirurgiche ed Oncologiche, Sezione di Chirurgia Plastica e Ricostruttiva, Università di Palermo, Palermo, Italy. Abstract The association between factor VII deficiency and cleft palate has never been described. The case of a child with cleft palate and factor VII deficiency who successfully underwent palatoplasty is described in this article. To allow surgical treatment, through maintenance of a normal prothrombin time, the patient was given 15 microg/kg of recombinant factor VIIa every 12 hours, …
What is the preferred concentration of ethanolamine oleate for sclerotherapy of oral vascular anomalies?
2020
Background This study compared three different concentrations of EO (1.25%, 2.5% and 5%) for the treatment of oral vascular anomalies (OVAs). Material and Methods This was a retrospective comparative analysis of patients with OVAs treated with EO. Anomalies smaller than 20 mm were included. The patients were treated with 1.25% (G1), 2.5% (G2), and 5% (G3) and clinical data were obtained. The number of sessions, the final volume and dose of EO were statistically analyzed to verify effectiveness and safety of the treatment. The different concentrations of EO were compared considering the number of sessions, the final volume and total dose of EO. Analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) was used to eva…
DNA Content and Synthesis in Several Tissues and Variation of Moulting Hormone-Level in Gryllus bimaculatus DEG (Ensifera, Insecta)
1983
The mode of growth of several tissues in Gryllus bimaculatus was investigated during postembryonic development by cytophotometric methods. In contrast to the situation in holo- metabolous insects, the tissues growing by endomitosis reach only moderate levels of polyploidy. In this case the growth of tissues is achieved by mitotic divisions of small cells with subsequent polyploidization. The time courses of DNA synthesis were measured within the 3rd and, for comparison, the 8th larval instar by incorporation of labelled thymidine followed by autoradiography. Hemocytes, cells of the regeneration crypts of the midgut, gonads and nervous tissue showed a continuous incorporation rate; by contra…
Pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry of soil organic matter extracted from a Brazilian mangrove and Spanish salt marshes
2009
The soil organic matter (SOM) extracted under different vegetation types from a Brazilian mangrove (Pai Matos Island, São Paulo State) and from three Spanish salt marshes (Betanzos Ría and Corrubedo Natural Parks, Galícia, and the Albufera Natural Park, Valencia) was investigated by pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS). The chemical variation was larger in SOM from the Spanish marshes than in the SOM of the Brazilian mangroves, possibly because the marshes included sites with both tidal and nontidal variation, whereas the mangrove forest underwent just tidal variation. Thus, plant-derived organic matter was better preserved under permanently anoxic environments. Moreove…
Synergy of Miniemulsion and Solvothermal Conditions for the Low-Temperature Crystallization of Magnetic Nanostructured Transition-Metal Ferrites
2017
Crystalline first-row transition-metal (Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, and Zn) ferrites were prepared by an unprecedented synergetic combination of miniemulsion synthesis and solvothermal route, pursuing unconventional conditions in terms of space confinement, temperature, and pressure. This synergy allowed for obtaining six different crystalline ferrites at much lower temperature (i.e., 80 °C) than usually required and without any postsynthesis thermal treatment. X-ray diffraction (XRD) revealed that analogous ferrites synthesized by miniemulsion at ambient pressure or in bulk (i.e., from an aqueous bulk solution and not in the confined space of the miniemulsion droplets) either at ambient pressure o…
Synthesis, crystal structures, magnetic properties, and lattice dynamics of Ba2XCu(OH)[V2O7] with X=Cl, Br
2016
Abstract We have synthesized Ba2XCu(OH)[V2O7] with X=Cl, Br by hydrothermal methods. The isotypic structures (Pnma, Z=4, a≈15.1 A, b≈6.1 A, c≈9.6 A) contain distorted hexagonal layers of Ba and X in a BN-type arrangement. Each halide is further coordinated by one out-of plane Ba atom in an alternate up-down fashion resulting in an overall Ba 2 X 3 + ∞ 2 structural feature. The planar Ba–X hexagonal rings are centered by divanadate groups in an eclipsed orientation. Edge-sharing chains of CuO 2/2 (OH) 2/2 O 2/1 5 - ∞ 1 complement the structure. The magnetic properties are associated with the magnetic Cu2+ ions and can be described as an antiferromagnetic quasi 1D S=1/2 Heisenberg system. Co…
Rare-earth ion exchanged Cu-SSZ-13 zeolite from organotemplate-free synthesis with enhanced hydrothermal stability in NH3-SCR of NOx
2019
The relatively low hydrothermal stability of Al-rich Cu-SSZ-13 catalysts hinders their practical application in ammonia selective catalytic reduction (NH3-SCR) reaction. Rare-earth ions were introduced into the Al-rich SSZ-13 zeolite using an organotemplate-free synthesis prior to the exchange of Cu2+ ions. Among the rare-earth ions tested (Ce, La, Sm, Y, Yb), Y shows significant enhancement of the hydrothermal stability and NH3-SCR activities after severe hydrothermal aging at 800 °C for 16 h when compared with Cu-SSZ-13 without Y. Cu–Y-SSZ-13 catalysts with various amounts of Y were prepared, and it is found that with increasing Y content, the low temperature NO conversions can be improve…
Robust Mesoporous CoMo/γ-Al2O3 Catalysts from Cyclodextrin-Based Supramolecular Assemblies for Hydrothermal Processing of Microalgae: Effect of the P…
2018
Hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) is a promising technology for the production of biocrude oil from microalgae. Although this catalyst-free technology is efficient under high-temperature and high-pressure conditions, the biocrude yield and quality can be further improved by using heterogeneous catalysts. The design of robust catalysts that preserve their performance under hydrothermal conditions will be therefore very important in the development of biorefinery technologies. In this work, we describe two different synthetic routes (i.e., impregnation and cyclodextrin-assisted one-pot colloidal approach), for the preparation in aqueous phase of six high surface area CoMo/γ-Al2O3 catalysts. Cat…
Hydrothermal liquefaction of wood using a modified multistage shrinking-core model
2020
Abstract Wood liquefaction in hot compressed water is modeled using the hydrolysis of Cellulose, Hemicellulose, and Lignin. These three components are reacted under catalyst-free subcritical conditions in a temperature range from 553 K to 640 K, and the heating rate ranges from 2 K/min to 6 K/min. Using a simplified reaction scheme, water-soluble products 1 (WSP), Biocrude, char, and gas are generated through intermediates with each wood component. A modified multistage shrinking core model is employed to simulate biomass particle degradation. The reaction and kinetic regime of the hydrothermal liquefaction 2 (HTL) process are treated separately for each wood component. Although the lack of…
Hydrothermal ageing of polylactide/sisal biocomposites. Studies of water absorption behaviour and Physico-Chemical performance
2014
An accelerated hydrothermal degrading test was designed in order to analyse the synergic effect of water and temperature on PLA/sisal biocomposites with and without coupling agent. As well, the physicochemical properties of biocomposites were monitored along the hydrothermal test by means of Scanning Electron Microscopy, Size Exclusion Chromatography and Differential Scanning Calorimetry. The addition of fibre induced higher water absorption capability and promoted physical degradation, as observed in the surface topography. During the processing of biocomposites and throughout the hydrothermal ageing, a reduction of molecular weight due to chain scission was found. As a consequence, a fast…
