Eco-friendly cavity-containing iron oxides prepared by mild routes as very efficient catalysts for the total oxidation of VOCs
2018
Iron oxides (FeOx) are non-toxic, non-expensive and environmentally friendly compounds, which makes them good candidates for many industrial applications, among them catalysis. In the present article five catalysts based on FeOx were synthesized by mild routes: hydrothermal in subcritical and supercritical conditions (Fe-HT, Few200, Few450) and solvothermal (Fe-ST1 and Fe-ST2). The catalytic activity of these catalysts was studied for the total oxidation of toluene using very demanding conditions with high space velocities and including water and CO2 in the feed. The samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (SEM and…
Biogas production from ensiled maize with and without hydrothermal pretreatment
2010
Energy crops are suitable substrates for anaerobic digestion. In the future their use will probably increase, and among other things optimum storage and pretreatment technologies should be developed. In this study eight maize silage varieties grown in Piikkiö, Southern Finland were used as substrates in anaerobic digestion. Also hydrothermal pretreatment was used to improve the biogas yield. Composition of the maize silage and the pretreated maize silage were analyzed and inhibitors were analyzed from the pretreated maize silage. The maize silages produce methane as much as fresh maizes in previous studies, when losses during the ensiling are taking into account and even 25-50 % more when l…
Succesio ab intestato: Concerning the death of Rodrigo de Mendoza, I Marquis of the Cenete
2017
Otto Neugebauer and the Göttingen Approach to History of the Exact Sciences
2018
Otto Neugebauer (1899–1990) was, for many, an enigmatic personality. Trained as a mathematician in Graz, Munich, and Gottingen, he had not yet completed his doctoral research when in 1924 Harald Bohr, brother of the famous physicist, invited him to Copenhagen to work together on Bohr’s new theory of almost periodic functions. Quite by chance, Bohr asked Neugebauer to write a review of T. Eric Peet’s recently published edition of the Rhind Papyrus (Neugebauer 1925). In the course of doing so, Neugebauer became utterly intrigued by Egyptian methods for calculating fractions as sums of unit fractions (e.g. 3/5 = 1/3 + 1/5 + 1/15). When he returned to Gottingen, he wrote his dissertation on thi…

Direct oral anticoagulant use in patients with thrombophilia, antiphospholipid syndrome or venous thrombosis of unusual sites: A narrative review.
2018
Direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) are indicated in the treatment and prevention of venous thromboembolism (VTE). However, the use of DOACs in unusual VTE, including cerebral venous thrombosis (CVT) and splanchnic venous thrombosis (SVT), and in patients with biological thrombophilia including minor thrombophilia (Factor V Leiden and prothrombin G20210A), major innate thrombophilia (protein C and S deficiency, and antithrombin) and major acquired thrombophilia (antiphospholipid syndrome [APS]), remains controversial due to the paucity of available data. There are some reports of DOACs use in the initial treatment or long-term maintenance of patients with either CVT or SVT, but their efficac…
Morning and smooth 24-h ambulatory blood pressure control is not achieved in general practice: results from the SURGE observational study.
2013
BACKGROUND The aim of this large-scale, practice-based observational study [Survey with HBPM and ABPM Under Real clinical conditions in General practice to Evaluate BP control in the early morning (SURGE)] was to ascertain the degree of morning and 24-h ambulatory blood pressure (ABP) control in hypertensive patients. METHODS Hypertensive patients [with uncontrolled clinic blood pressure (BP) >140/90 mmHg at screening] from nine different countries were included. Ambulatory BP monitoring was performed over 24 h at 15-min intervals during the day and at 20-min intervals during the night. Assessments included morning (0600-1159 h) and daytime ABP control (BP < 135/85 mmHg), and 24-h ABP contr…
Combined use of antifibrinolytics and activated prothrombin complex concentrate (aPCC) is not related to thromboembolic events in patients with acqui…
2019
Antifibrinolytics combined with aPCC are not routinely administered to patients with acquired hemophilia A due to increased thrombotic risk. This association normalizes clot stability, and improves the efficacy of therapy, but can increase the risk of severe side effects. Due to these premises it has always raised doubts and perplexities in the clinics. We now report the data of the "FEIBA® on acquired haemophilia A Italian Registry (FAIR Registry)", a retrospective-prospective study that included 56 patients. This is the first study that assessed the clinical response of the combination of aPCC and antifibrinolytic agents in patients with acquired haemophilia A. A total of 101 acute bleeds…
The effect of two sulphur-containing pesticides, fenitrothion and endosulfan, on glutathione (GSH) content and on GSH S-transferase and gamma-glutamy…
1988
The glutathione (GSH) system of Procambarus clarkii (P.c.), the American red crayfish, is used as a marker of the effects of Fenitrothion (FT) and Endosulfan (ES), organophosphorus and organochlorinated insecticides, respectively. This system has been shown to be sensitive to different heavy metals poisoning, thus it has a double interest as marker for environmental contamination and as a potential source of xenobiotics or their metabolites to humans, since it is being fished commercially. The GSH content of the organ decreased 24 h after treatment with FT. FT promotes a 2-fold induction of GSH S-transferase (GST) activity at 6 h which is followed by a decrease of it at 24 h. The latter coi…
