Aspects and problems of changing economic utilization of the land in Italy and the corresponding soil consumption

2013

The study moves from the observation that, in the last fifty years (1961-2010) the territory of our country, like those of other countries with advanced economies, has undergone extensive economic processes of change in the use of land, mostly due to a strong reduction of Agricultural Area Use (AAU), whose consistency - on the basis of official statistics (National Statistics Institute) and, in particular, the results of the General Census of Agriculture - is estimated at around 7,8 million hectares, from 20, 7 million hectares in 1961 to 12,9 million in 2010. It should be noted in fact that the intensity of the processes of reduction of the UAA was much greater in the first three decades, …

This trend is confirmed by the birth, in Italy of many solidarity purchase groups (called in Italy Gruppi di Acquisto Solidale or GAS),made up of individuals or families who choose to purchase products with a high ethical value. In this paper we try to identify socio-economic conditions and motivation of individual members of GAS, and for this purpose we developed over 205 questionnaires.

La sostenibilità inconsapevole del costruito rurale tradizionale: l’esempio della masseria siciliana

2005

Traditional rural buildings are an example of sustainable development, with regard to both the source of the main building materials, and to several recurring technical solutions. However, this ecological value was not intentionally accorded by the original creators: we are only able to recognise it by utilisation of present-day knowledge and a comparison with contemporary rural settlements, which have lost it irremediably. This article analyses certain features of sustainability that can be observed in traditional Sicilian farm buildings, with reference both to the realisation and information from the coeval manuals.

2018

Circular Economy (CE) focuses on the (re)design of processes and products aiming to minimize negative environmental impact, by reducing the use of non-renewable resources, increasing products durability, improving waste management and enhancing the market for secondary raw materials. Understanding consumer demand for sustainable beef production in rural communities

2015

In the past two decades, due to the series of crises within the agro-food system, such as BSE, dioxin, and foot and mouth disease, consumer demand for sustainable production has considerably grown in European society. The aim of our study was to understand how food quality and labelling are assessed by rural population in Southern Italy. Local beef production with sustainable voluntary certification was the focus of our empirical strategy. Our decision…
