Study of a sample of faint Be stars in the exofield of CoRoT

2013

International audience; Context. Be stars are probably the most rapid rotators among stars in the main sequence (MS) and, as such, are excellent candidates to study the incidence of the rotation on the characteristics of their non-radial pulsations, as well as on their internal structure. Pulsations are also thought to be possible mechanisms that help the mass ejection needed to build up the circumstellar disks of Be stars.Aims. The purpose of this paper is to identify a number of faint Be stars observed with the CoRoT satellite and to determine their fundamental parameters, which will enable us to study their pulsation properties as a function of the location in the HR diagram and to searc…

12q14.3 microdeletion involving HMGA2 gene cause a Silver-Russell syndrome-like phenotype: a case report and review of the literature

2020

Abstract Background Silver-Russell Syndrome (SRS) is a genetic disorder characterized by intrauterine and postnatal growth restriction and normal head circumference with consequent relative macrocephaly. Addictional findings are protruding forehead in early life, body asymmetry (of upper and lower limbs) and substantial feeding difficulties. Although several genetic mechanisms that cause the syndrome are known, more than 40% of patients with a SRS-like phenotype remain without an etiological diagnosis. In the last few years, different clinical reports have suggested that mutations or deletions of the HMGA2 gene can be responsible for a SRS-like phenotype in patients with negative results of…

On john maynard keynes's anti-semitism once again: A documentary note

2015

This note presents new archival evidence about John Maynard Keynes' attitudes toward Jews. The relevant material is composed of two letters sent by Robert G. Wertheimer to Bertrand Russell and Richard F. Kahn along with their replies. Between 1963 and 1964, Wertheimer - An Austrian-born Jewish immigrant then professor of economics at Babson College - wrote to Russell and Kahn asking for their personal reminiscences concerning Keynes' anti-Semitic utterances. In their brief but still significant responses, both Russell and Kahn firmly denied any hint of anti-Semitism in Keynes, thereby providing significant first-hand testimonies from two of his closest acquaintances.

Lògica i coneixement [Introducció]

1985

2013

In Brussels in 1549 Charles V commissioned four bronze and four marble sculptures from Leone Leoni, to which were added new orders. The sculptor worked on them, especially the bronzes, in Milan, and they were shipped to Spain along with other works at the time of the arrival of the Emperor and the Court. This article discusses the history and evolution of the marbles and a bust (Prado Museum: E-260, E-262, E-267, E-269, E-291), which were sent from Genoa to Cartagena, where they remained until 1568. After years of neglect, Pompeo Leoni was commissioned to arrange for their transfer to his house in Madrid along with Juan de Lugano, artist and dealer in marbles, where Pompeo finished most of …

Politics of belonging in Brussels’ European Quarter

2019

The European Union (EU) has been criticised for a lack of imageries and sites of memory that nation-states have traditionally utilised in their identity-building. The EU, along with other actors, has responded to this iconographic deficit with memory and heritage initiatives and branding campaigns. This article explores how this deficit is dealt with in the European Quarter in Brussels by enlivening it through cultural regeneration and creating narratives that link Europe’s and the EU’s past with the present. The article utilises hermeneutic phenomenological approach combining observation and interpretation of diverse place-making practices, such as monuments, memorials, public artworks, hi…

VLTI/AMBER spectro-interferometry of the late-type supergiants V766 Cen (=HR 5171 A), σ Oph, BM Sco, and HD 206859

2017

Aims. We add four warmer late-type supergiants to our previous spectro-interferometric studies of red giants and supergiants. Methods. We measure the near-continuum angular diameter, derive fundamental parameters, discuss the evolutionary stage, and study extended atmospheric atomic and molecular layers. Results. V766 Cen (=HR 5171 A) is found to be a high-luminosity (log L/L = 5.8 ± 0.4) source of effective temperature 4290 ± 760 K and radius 1490 ± 540 R, located in the Hertzsprung-Russell (HR) diagram close to both the Hayashi limit and Eddington limit; this source is consistent with a 40 M evolutionary track without rotation and current mass 27-36 M. V766 Cen exhibits Na i in emission a…

Silver-Russell syndrome associated to Mayer-Rokitansky-Kuster-Hauser syndrome, diabetes and hirsutism

2001

We report an unusual association of two rare conditions, the Silver-Russell syndrome and the Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser syndrome, with extra endocrine anomalies. A 15-year old Silver-Russell syndrome girl was referred to our Unit because of primary amenorrhea and hirsutism of adrenal origin. A thorough assessment confirmed previous diagnoses and revealed the presence of diabetes, hyperinsulinism and a complete Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser syndrome with an ectopic localization of both ovaries. Although initial medical treatment was not unsatisfactory, future medical, psychological and social implications are expected.

Los límites del empirismo: a propósito de Kant y Russell

1986

... This paper attemps to contrast Kant's view on the limits of empiricism with the posing of the problem in the empiricism of this century, as exemplified by Bertrand Russell's thought. The conflict is approached analyzing two problems: the epistemological nature of mathematics, on the one hand, and the theory of subjectivity, on the other hand, both considered in Kant and Russell. As regards mathematics, the epistemological possibilities of Kant's constructivism are contrasted with the difficulties, from the point of view of empiricism, of accepting Russell's platonic logicism. As regards the theory of subjectivity, the paper presents the alternative between transcendental subjectivity as…

Bertrand Russell

2015

Bertrand Russell has been one of the most influential philosophers of the 20th Century. The importance of his work can not be confined to a particular thematic area such as mathematical logic or philosophy of language. Extraordinary vital, extremely curious and with a very acute intellect, he has produced an immense body of work.
