Finns in the Colonial World

2021

AbstractUtilizing such concepts as “colonial complicity” and “colonialism without colonies”, this chapter examines the case of Finns and Finland as a nation that was once oppressed but also itself complicit in colonialism. It argues that although the Finnish nation has historically been positioned in Europe between western and eastern empires, Finns were not only passive victims of (Russian) imperial rule but also active participants in the creation of imperial vocabulary in various colonial contexts, including Sápmi in the North. This chapter argues that although Finns never had overseas colonies, they were involved in the colonial world, sending out colonizers and producing images of colon…

Tema starosti v romane Gajto Gazdanova "Nočnye dorogi"

2016

Do tematu starości niejednokrotnie zwracał się w swojej twórczości przedstawiciel młodszego pokolenia pierwszej fali emigracji rosyjskiej, Gajto Gazdanow, najczęściej rozpatrując starość w kontekście sensu życia i śmierci. Temat starości dla Gazdanowa to przede wszystkim możliwość rozważania o sensie życia i śmierci, pokazania kontrastu pomiędzy ograniczonością, bezsensem istnienia i przeżywaniem…

Comparison of Pitch Range in Finnish (L1) and Russian (L2)

2007

The aim of the present study is to investigate whether the pitch range of a speaker can vary according to the language he speaks. The hypothesis is tested on Finnish university students studying Russian as a foreign language before and after their stay in Russia. First, the global pitch range (max – min) is determined. Second, the pitch range in different types of utterances (declarative, question, exclamation) is examined by superimposing pitch contours. The results indicate that the learners have a narrower pitch range and a less variable pitch than native speakers both in L1 and L2. However, the results also suggest that L2 experience seems to help most students to produce a more native-…

Obraz Rossii v polʹskih demotivatorah

2017

Demotivators are Internet hybrid texts, which reflect Internet users’ attitudes to politics, culture, sport, more or less famous individuals, and nations. A common topic expressed with demotivators is Russia and the Russians. However, the images of Russia projected by such demotivators are frequently stereotypical and negative, while graphic images employed in the Russian-themed hybrid texts can be classified into several categories. The first group constitutes images adhering to the underlying idea that “Russia is not a country; it is a state of mind”. These demotivators copy the content of the Russian Internet that depicts Russia as a country of absurdity, nonsense and poverty. Another gr…

Threats and attitudes toward Russian-speaking immigrants: a comparative study between younger and older Finns

2014

Using integrated threat theory as a theoretical lens to detect negative attitudes toward minority groups, this study compares and contrasts the perceptions and attitudes of older and younger Finns toward Russian-speaking minorities in Finland. A sample of high school students between 16 and 20 years of age represented the younger generation, while individuals over 65 years of age represented the older generation. The total sample was 242. Results indicated that there is a positive correlation between threat perception and prejudice. Results revealed that both groups have prejudices against Russian speakers and that these prejudices are related to the perception of realistic threat and negat…
