Numerical and experimental analysis of a high innovative hydrofoil
2020
The hydrofoil is a craft where the weight is entirely supported by the lift generated by the submerged part of wings. The particular structure of the craft requires a thorough study of the architecture of the hull, whose structure differs from others high speed vessels since the lift on wing surfaces are transmitted to the hull in limited areas (wing attacks). The authors have developed a research to optimize geometry of hull and wing system on a hydrofoil capable to carry 250 passengers at a speed of 35 knots, operating among Sicilian island. The principal goals of the new hydrofoil concern both the fuel reduction that the improvement of the comfort in terms of seakeeping and levels of aco…
Fuzzy Logic Based Security Trust Evaluation for IoT Environments
2019
In the new technological era called the Internet of Things (IoT), people, machines and objects communicate with each other via the Internet by exchanging information. In this context, trust plays an important role and is considered as a key factor in the success of the IoT services expansion. IoT services and applications use in some cases data concerning the privacy of their users. Consequently, users should trust the entities exchanging their personal information. In this paper, we present a framework that evaluates the security trust level of IoT nodes based on a Fuzzy Logic model using different input parameters such as Device Physical Security, Device Security Level and Device Ownershi…
Projection Clustering Unfolding: A New Algorithm for Clustering Individuals or Items in a Preference Matrix
2020
In the framework of preference rankings, the interest can lie in clustering individuals or items in order to reduce the complexity of the preference space for an easier interpretation of collected data. The last years have seen a remarkable flowering of works about the use of decision tree for clustering preference vectors. As a matter of fact, decision trees are useful and intuitive, but they are very unstable: small perturbations bring big changes. This is the reason why it could be necessary to use more stable procedures in order to clustering ranking data. In this work, a Projection Clustering Unfolding (PCU) algorithm for preference data will be proposed in order to extract useful info…
GPU-Based Occlusion Minimisation for Optimal Placement of Multiple 3D Cameras
2020
This paper presents a fast GPU-based solution to the 3D occlusion detection problem and the 3D camera placement optimisation problem. Occlusion detection is incorporated into the optimisation problem to return near-optimal positions for 3D cameras in environments containing occluding objects, which maximises the volume that is visible to the cameras. In addition, the authors’ previous work on 3D sensor placement optimisation is extended to include a model for a pyramid-shaped viewing frustum and to take the camera’s pose into account when computing the optimal position.
Automation Inner Speech as an Anthropomorphic Feature Affecting Human Trust: Current Issues and Future Directions
2021
This paper aims to discuss the possible role of inner speech in influencing trust in human–automation interaction. Inner speech is an everyday covert inner monolog or dialog with oneself, which is essential for human psychological life and functioning as it is linked to self-regulation and self-awareness. Recently, in the field of machine consciousness, computational models using different forms of robot speech have been developed that make it possible to implement inner speech in robots. As is discussed, robot inner speech could be a new feature affecting human trust by increasing robot transparency and anthropomorphism.

The effect of energy feedbacks on continental strength
2005
The classical strength profile of continents is derived from a quasi-static view of their rheological response to stress--one that does not consider dynamic interactions between brittle and ductile layers. Such interactions result in complexities of failure in the brittle-ductile transition and the need to couple energy to understand strain localization. Here we investigate continental deformation by solving the fully coupled energy, momentum and continuum equations. We show that this approach produces unexpected feedback processes, leading to a significantly weaker dynamic strength evolution. In our model, stress localization focused on the brittle-ductile transition leads to the spontaneo…
Magnetic phase diagram of the anisotropic multi-band Hubbard model
2007
Using quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) simulations we determine the magnetic phase diagram of the anisotropic two-band Hubbard model within the dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) in the important intermediate-coupling regime. We compare the QMC predictions with exact results from second-order weak-and strong-coupling perturbation theory. We find that the orbital-selective Mott transition (OSMT), which occurs in the fully frustrated case, is completely hidden in the antiferromagnetic (AF) ground state of the model. On the basis of our results, we discuss possible mechanisms of frustration. We also demonstrate the close relationship of the physics of the two-band Hubbard model in the orbital-selecti…
