Designing spin-spin interactions with one and two dimensional ion crystals in planar micro traps

We discuss the experimental feasibility of quantum simulation with trapped ion crystals, using magnetic field gradients. We describe a micro structured planar ion trap, which contains a central wire loop generating a strong magnetic gradient of about 20 T/m in an ion crystal held about 160 \mu m above the surface. On the theoretical side, we extend a proposal about spin-spin interactions via magnetic gradient induced coupling (MAGIC) [Johanning, et al, J. Phys. B: At. Mol. Opt. Phys. 42 (2009) 154009]. Frustration, Entanglement, and Correlations in Quantum Many Body Systems

We derive an exact lower bound to a universal measure of frustration in degenerate ground states of quantum many-body systems. The bound results in the sum of two contributions: entanglement and classical correlations arising from local measurements. We show that average frustration properties are completely determined by the behavior of the maximally mixed ground state. We identify sufficient conditions for a quantum spin system to saturate the bound, and for models with twofold degeneracy we prove that average and local frustration coincide.

Spin glasses: Experimental facts, theoretical concepts, and open questions

This review summarizes recent developments in the theory of spin glasses, as well as pertinent experimental data. The most characteristic properties of spin glass systems are described, and related phenomena in other glassy systems (dielectric and orientational glasses) are mentioned. The Edwards-Anderson model of spin glasses and its treatment within the replica method and mean-field theory are outlined, and concepts such as "frustration," "broken replica symmetry," "broken ergodicity," etc., are discussed. The dynamic approach to describing the spin glass transition is emphasized. Monte Carlo simulations of spin glasses and the insight gained by them are described. Other topics discussed …

Regular packings on periodic lattices.

We investigate the problem of packing identical hard objects on regular lattices in d dimensions. Restricting configuration space to parallel alignment of the objects, we study the densest packing at a given aspect ratio X. For rectangles and ellipses on the square lattice as well as for biaxial ellipsoids on a simple cubic lattice, we calculate the maximum packing fraction \phi_d(X). It is proved to be continuous with an infinite number of singular points X^{\rm min}_\nu, X^{\rm max}_\nu, \nu=0, \pm 1, \pm 2,... Dispersion of pressure at the inner edge of the neutron star crust

This paper presents a method for estimating the pressure variance at the inner edge of a neutron star crust. The obtained results quantify uncertainty in the estimation of pressure at the core-crust interface, implying that they depend on the selected equation of state and the neutron star’s mass distribution function. The quality of the transition pressure determination depends on the neutron star’s mass, with a significant decrease in accuracy for configurations with masses close to 2M . The method used makes it possible to control the theoretical part of the core-crust pressure dispersion in determining the observational quantities.

Sexual selection on male body size and assortative pairing in Gammarus pulex (Crustacea: Amphipoda): field surveys and laboratory experiments

Variation in size-assortative pairing was studied in relation to sexual selection on male body size in the amphipod Gammarus pulex, using both transverse and longitudinal surveys of natural populations. In addition, the influence of male–male competition on size-assortative pairing was tested in the laboratory. In both surveys, the intensity of sexual selection was positive and significant for male body size but not for females, and size-assortative pairing was positive and significant. The temperature-size rule (TSR) is a well-established phenomenon to describe the growth response of ectotherms to temperature by which individuals maintained at low temperatures grow more slowly, but attain a larger size upon maturity. Temperature adaptation influences the aggregation state of hemocyanin from Astacus leptodactylus.

When Astacus leptodactylus were kept at various temperatures for several weeks, different ratios between di-hexameric and hexameric hemocyanins were observed in their hemolymph. The higher the temperature the more hexamers were present. This long-term adaptation to different temperatures or/and to temperature-induced pH-shifts as observed in the hemolymph has different effects on the expression of subunit types building up hexamers and those which covalently link two hexamers within the di-hexamers. The oxygen binding behaviour of di-hexameric hemocyanins from cold and warm adapted animals do not show differences with respect to affinity, Bohr effect and cooperativity.
