Variation of lattice constant and cluster formation in GaAsBi
2013
We investigate the structural properties of GaAsBi layers grown by molecular beam epitaxy on GaAs at substrate temperatures between 220–315 C. Irrespective of the growth temperature, the structures exhibited similar Bi compositions, and good overall crystal quality as deduced from X-Ray diffraction measurements. After thermal annealing at temperatures as low as 500 C, the GaAsBi layers grown at the lowest temperatures exhibited a significant reduction of the lattice constant. The lattice variation was significantly larger for Bi-containing samples than for Bi-free low-temperature GaAs samples grown as a reference. Rutherford backscattering spectrometry gave no evidence of Bi diffusing out o…
Nucleation and growth of ZnO on PMMA by low-temperature atomic layer deposition
2015
ZnO films were grown by atomic layer deposition at 35 °C on poly(methyl methacrylate) substrates using diethylzinc and water precursors. The film growth, morphology, and crystallinity were studied using Rutherford backscattering spectrometry, time-of-flight elastic recoil detection analysis, atomic force microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and x-ray diffraction. The uniform film growth was reached after several hundreds of deposition cycles, preceded by the precursor penetration into the porous bulk and island-type growth. After the full surface coverage, the ZnO films were stoichiometric, and consisted of large grains (diameter 30 nm) with a film surface roughness up to 6 nm (RMS). T…
Non-Desarguian geometries and the foundations of geometry from David Hilbert to Ruth Moufang
2004
Abstract In this work, we study the development of non-Desarguian geometry from David Hilbert to Ruth Moufang. We will see that a geometric model became a complicated interrelation between algebra and geometry.
Breaking bad news: How to cope.
2018
Physicians often are uncomfortable when communicating an unfavorable outcome: they feel inadequate in the face of uncontrollable disease and unprepared to manage the emotional reactions of patients. For lack of proper training, they often adopt inappropriate ways to disclose unfavorable information. We will outline some key points about the issue of disclosing bad news and aim to provide useful tools to physicians who have to cope frequently with breaking bad news to patients, providing examples and clinical sceneries specific to gastroenterology and hepatology practice.
Opportunistic Germination Behaviour of Gypsophila (Caryophyllaceae) in Two Priority Habitats from Semi-arid Mediterranean Steppes
2011
Gypsophila tomentosa and G. struthium are closely related species, characteristic of two European priority habitats, salt and gypsum inland steppes, respectively. Germination strategies of the two taxa were investigated in plants from two nearby populations, growing under the same climatic conditions but on different types of soil, and belonging to different plant communities. Their germination patterns were studied at five constant temperatures in darkness: 5oC, 10oC, 15oC, 20oC and 25oC, and the base temperature and the thermal time requirement were calculated. As the distribution area of both species is subjected to a Mediterranean continental climate with significant differences between…
A new species of Empruthotrema (Monogenea: Monocotylidae) from Pteromylaeus bovinus (Myliobatidae) from the Western Mediterranean.
2010
Empruthotrema chisholmae n. sp. is described from specimens recovered from a bull ray Pteromylaeus bovinus (Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire, 1817) at the Oceanogràfic Aquarium in Valencia, Spain. The bull ray was caught in the Spanish Mediterranean (Puerto de Mazarrón, Murcia). The new species resembles 4 others of the same genus ( Empruthotrema dasyatidis Whittington and Kearn, 1992, Empruthotrema kearni Whittington, 1990, Empruthotrema stenophallus Chisholm and Whittington, 2005, and Empruthotrema tasmaniensis Chisholm and Whittington, 1999) in having a haptor with 13 marginal loculi, the posteriormost loculus single and medial. The new species can be distinguished from these other species of the …
Quali forme di narrazione per eventi come la Shoah? Sulla tropologia di Hayden White.
2023
The critical debate resulting from the rhetorical or linguistic turn brings out within historical research a tension between narrative and documentation that, to the risk of making the boundary between history and the novel implied by the centrality of the role of narrative increasingly evanescent, counterpoints an appeal to the status of evidence, invoked by some historians, which in turn is not without its criticality. In particular, we take as a point of departure Hayden Whyte's Forms of History from Reality to Narrative, in which historiographical research is characterized with reference to the ability to follow those organizing principles peculiar to literary experiments as modes of hi…
Narrating the Unspeakable The Use of Metaphor between Hayden White and Hannah Arendt
2023
The paper addresses the question of the use of metaphors and analogies for events such as the Holocaust in the context of the discourse on the reduction of historiography to its narrative or rhetorical dimension and reflects on the philosophical implications of this reduction with respect to the question of post-truth. The critical debate resulting from the rhetorical or linguistic turn brings out within historical research a tension between narrative and documentation that, to the risk of making the boundary between history and the novel implied by the centrality of the role of narrative increasingly evanescent, counterpoints an appeal to the status of evidence, invoked by some historians,…
cis,cis,cis-(Acetato-k2O,O´)bis[1,2-bis- (diphenylphosphanyl)ethane-k2P,P´]- ruthenium(II) 0.75-trifluoromethanesulfonate 0.25-chloride
2013
In the title Ru(II) carboxyl-ate compound, [Ru(C2H3O2)(C26H24P2)2](CF3O3S)0.75Cl0.25, the distorted tris-bidentate octa-hedral stereochemistry about the Ru(II) atom in the complex cation comprises four P-atom donors from two 1,2-bis-(diphenyl-phosphan-yl)ethane ligands [Ru-P = 2.2881 (13)-2.3791 (13) Å] and two O-atom donors from the acetate ligand [Ru-O = 2.191 (3) and 2.202 (3) Å]. The disordered counter-anions are located on the same site in the structure in a 3:1 ratio, the expanded formula comprising four complex cations, three trifluoro-methane-sulfonate anions and one chloride anion, with two such formula units in the unit cell.
Ruthenium(II) and platinum(II) homo- and heterobimetallic complexes: Synthesis, crystal structures, theoretical calculations and biological studies
2019
Four Ru-Pd heterobimetallic complexes, each one in two different coordination modes (NNSS and NS) having metals connected by a binucleating dialkyldithiooxamidate [N(R)SC-CS(R)N] [R = methyl, ethyl, n-butyl and isopropyl], were prepared by reacting the monochelate [(trinpropyl-phosphine)ClPd(HR2C2N2S2κ-S,S-Pd)] with [(η6-p-cymene)RuCl2]2. Furthermore, two palladium homobimetallic complexes having two (trinpropyl-phosphine)ClPd moieties joined by a diethyldithiooxamidate in both κ-N,S Pd, κ-N',S' Pd' and κ-N,N' Pd, κ-S,S' Pd' coordination modes were synthesized. For both kinds of complexes, homo- and heterobimetallic, at room temperature and in chloroform solution, the NNSS coordination mode…
