Ancient Theories of Reasoning
2013
In this section, the central question is whether we can find ancient discussions concerning what happens in the mind when a conclusion is drawn. Did ancient authors suppose that there is a psychological force that compels us to accept the conclusion when the premises are accepted and the inference is valid? Or, if the inference is not deductively valid but adds to the credibility of the conclusion in another way, e.g., by being inductive, what happens in the mind when such an inference is drawn? In general, psychology of reasoning was not a vital topic in antiquity. Reasoning was typically considered from a logical, not from a psychological point of view. For example, in Stoic sources the n…
An Interlude: Matters of Method
2021
The discussion of everyday discourse developed so far makes two entirely new problems inescapable. The first is that in everyday discourse there is no algebra, either Boolean or non-Boolean, of truth values. The second is that a new polarity (conceptually) correct–incorrect, distinct both from true–false, and from grammatical–ungrammatical, becomes indispensable.
Understanding the Excited State Behavior of Cyclometalated Bis(tridentate)ruthenium(II) Complexes: A Combined Experimental and Theoretical Study
2015
The synthesis and characterization of the donor-acceptor substituted cyclometalated ruthenium(II) polypyridine complex isomers [Ru(dpb-NHCOMe)(tpy-COOEt)](PF6) 1(PF6) and [Ru(dpb-COOEt)(tpy-NHCOMe)](PF6) 2(PF6) (dpbH = 1,3-dipyridin-2-ylbenzene, tpy = 2,2';6,2"-terpyridine) with inverted functional group pattern are described. A combination of resonance Raman spectroscopic and computational techniques shows that all intense visible range absorption bands arise from mixed Ru → tpy/Ru → dpb metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) excitations. 2(PF6) is weakly phosphorescent at room temperature in fluid solution and strongly emissive at 77 K in solid butyronitrile matrix, which is typical for r…
L’oggettività nelle teorie scientifiche rispetto alle pratiche del “discorso dominante” in Foucault
2022
The correspondence theory of truth can be arranged in such a way as to contain aspects of a “molecular” holism, in which background knowledge is linked but kept distinct from the content of the single proposition. Within this perspective, a proposition can still be a “representation” of a fact, always approximate and renegotiable, which nonetheless highlights the structure of the state of affairs in order to also illuminate the molecular group of states of affairs, of finite number, connected to the fact. Theories describe or represent real aspects of the world, but these aspects can always be analyzed in more depth, and they are never definitive, similar to the different levels of reality …
Welcoming the “Other”: Translating Truth for the Post-truth World
2018
Abstract This paper is an attempt to answer the question whether Bible translation may help building a community or communities, which would contribute to creating the framework for a commonality of faith. The answer is not difficult to state, since translation is about bridging gaps, about creating communities, as steps forward in this process. It is impossible to understand the process and to formulate an adequate and articulate answer to the initial question without taking a journey through the complex field of Translation Studies, and of Bible translation, in particular. The method of study involves analysis and use of concepts such as the paradox of translation, dynamic equivalence and…

Evolution of strategy narration and leadership work in the digital era
2019
This paper examines the evolution of strategy narration, contributing to ongoing discussions in this field. Our empirical data, gathered from a large Finnish co-operative bank, cover three decades. According to our findings, digitalisation has brought about an epoch change in strategy narration, as top management has strongly adopted digital media in their leadership work, which has replaced ‘traditional’ face-to-face strategy meetings and public presentations by gatherings on digital platforms, including webcasting, intranet and Skype. This has brought about a leadership vacuum, and left organisational members long for their superiors to ‘exercise’ some traditional leadership practices, su…
Foucault, posverdad y parresia
2019
In this paper, Vaccaro aims to interrogate the political value of truth. Moving from Hannah Arendt and the debate between modernity and postmodernity, the paper focus the Will to truth according the elaboration of Nietzsche, but also the first Collège de France course by Foucault in the ’70s. The thesis is a etho-politics of telling the truth, that to say the parrhesia, as an antidote either to the nihilation of truth in the post-truth, or to the enforcement of truth as the One in politics.
Verità ed evidenza: radici di un’etica fenomenologica
2020
The paper discusses the problem of the relationship between ethics and truth starting from a critique of the contemporary paradigm of post-truth. The opposition between objectivity and subjectivism that is the basis of this paradigm is questioned by inserting the medium term of objectivity as fairness. The truth is thus recovered as an exceding dimension that can never be completely owned. To illustrate this point, I therefore resort to the phenomenological theory of evidence, retracing its development in Edmund Husserl’s texts from the Sixth Logical Research to Formal and Transcendental Logic to the Cartesian Meditations. Thereby, it becomes gradually clear how the evidence is connected to…
