Deep-Red-Emitting Electrochemical Cells Based on Heteroleptic Bis-chelated Ruthenium(II) Complexes

2009

Two ruthenium(II)-based complexes were prepared that show intense deep-red light emission at room temperature. Solid-state electroluminescent devices were prepared using one of the ruthenium complexes as the only active component. These devices emit deep-red light at low voltages and exhibit extraordinary stabilities, demonstrating their potential for low-cost deep-red light sources.

A Trinuclear Aqua Cyano‐Bridged Ruthenium Complex [{(η 5 ‐C 5 H 5 )(PPh 3 ) 2 Ru(μ‐CN)} 2 RuCl 2 (PPh 3 )(H 2 O)]PF 6 : Synthesis, Characterization a…

2007

The organometallic trinuclear aqua cyano-bridged complex [{(η5-C5H5)(PPh3)2Ru(μ-CN)}2RuCl2(PPh3)(H2O)]PF6 (1), in which the fragment [RuCl2(PPh3)(H2O)] acts as a bridge and an acceptor group between the two terminal cyclopentadienyl ruthenium cyano moieties, was isolated in moderate yield from the reaction of [(η5-C5H5)(PPh3)2RuCN] with [RuCl2(PPh3)3] in THF. To the best of our knowledge, compound 1 is one of the few examples of a trinuclear array of ruthenium fragments bridged by the nitrogen atom of the–C≡N– group (Ru–C≡N–Ru′–N≡C–Ru) with a Ru-coordinated water molecule. The new aqua complex was structurally characterized by FTIR, 1H, 13C, and 31P NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, elem…

NbxRu6-xTe8, New Chevrel-Type Clusters Containing Niobium and Ruthenium,

1996

Phases of composition Nb(x)()Ru(6)(-)(x)()Te(8) were prepared by reacting stoichiometric mixtures of the elements at high temperature in evacuated silica ampules. The structure of Nb(3.33)Ru(2.67)Te(8) was refined from X-ray powder data using the Rietveld method. Nb(3.33)Ru(2.67)Te(8) crystallizes isotypic with Mo(6)Q(8) (Q = S, Se, Te) in the rhombohedral space group Rthremacr; with the hexagonal lattice parameters a = 10.34106(5) Å, c = 11.47953(7) Å, and Z = 3. Its structure consists of M(6)Te(8) mixed-metal clusters (M = Nb, Ru) which are connected by intercluster M-Te bonds to form a three-dimensional network. Metal-metal bonding in these phases is analyzed in terms of Pauling bond ord…

A Bis(tridentate)cobalt Polypyridine Complex as Mediator in Dye‐Sensitized Solar Cells

2015

Dye-sensitized solar cells equipped with cationic and neutral RuII-based sensitizers [Ru(ddpd){tpy(COOH)3}]2+ [12+; ddpd = N,N′-dimethyl-N,N′-di(pyridin-2-yl)pyridin-2,6-diamine, tpy(COOH)3 = 2,2″6′,2″-terpyridine-4,4′,4″-tricarboxylic acid] and [Ru(ddpd){tpy(COOH)(COO)2}] (2) with and without the coadsorbent chenodeoxycholic acid were constructed with I3–/I– or the CoIII/II-based redox mediators [Co(bpy)3]3+/2+ (33+/2+; bpy = 2,2′-bipyridine) and [Co(ddpd)2]3+/2+ (43+/2+) in the presence of LiClO4 and 4-tert-butylpyridine. The best photovoltaic performance was achieved by using the 43+/2+ shuttle and the neutral sensitizer 2 without coadsorbent. The higher short-circuit photocurrent densit…

A heteroleptic bis(tridentate)ruthenium(II) polypyridine complex with improved photophysical properties and integrated functionalizability.

2010

The synthesis and photophysical properties of a ruthenium(II) complex bearing an electron-accepting 2,2';6',2''-terpyridine ligand and an electron-donating N,N'-dimethyl-N,N'-dipyridin-2-ylpyridine-2,6-diamine (ddpd) ligand are presented. The heteroleptic complex is easily prepared isomerically pure and features intense low-energy metal-to-ligand charge-transfer (MLCT) absorption bands and intense room temperature (3)MLCT emission with a long (3)MLCT lifetime. The favorable photophysical properties are due to the strong ligand field imposed by the ddpd ligand.

Ruthenium Janus-Head Complexes with a Triazolediylidene Ligand. Structural Features and Catalytic Applications

2007

The use of the ligand triazolediylidene (ditz), has afforded the preparation of two new complexes of Ru in which the ligand is bridging two metal fragments in a facially opposed (Janus-head) disposition. One of the complexes is dinuclear (2) and the other tetranuclear (3). The tetranuclear compound displays interesting structural features, as shown by the X-ray diffraction studies. The two complexes have been tested in the catalytic β-alkylation of secondary alcohols with primary alcohols, providing high activities when both aliphatic and aromatic alcohols are used.

Anchor‐Functionalized Push‐Pull‐Substituted Bis(tridentate) Ruthenium(II) Polypyridine Chromophores: Photostability and Evaluation as Photosensitizers

2014

Stable push-pull substituted heteroleptic bis(tridentate) ruthenium(II) polypyridine complexes with COOH or 2,2′-bipyridine anchor groups have been prepared and characterized by 1H, 13C and 15N NMR 1D and 2D spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopy, elemental analysis, high-resolution ESI mass spectrometry, electrochemistry, UV/Vis absorption spectroscopy, luminescence spectroscopy, and density functional calculations. The complexes feature a pronounced electronic directionality and high absorption wavelengths up to λmax = 544 nm extending to 720 nm as a result of favorable push-pull substitutions. A remarkable photostability in the presence of water and coordinating ions (I–) was discovered for…

Carbonyl Transition Metal Complexes of a Silaborate Ligand

1998

Reaction between three equivalents of the silaborate [NEt4][MeSiB10H12] (2) and one equivalent of [Ru3(CO)12] resulted in almost quantitative formation of the mononuclear transition metal complex [NEt4][Ru(CO)3(η5-MeSiB10H10)] (5), which was characterized by X-ray structure analysis. The trinuclear ruthenium complex [NEt4][Ru3(CO)8(η5-MeSiB10H10)] (7) was synthesized in high yield from the reaction of one equivalent of 2 and [Ru3(CO)12]. The cluster 7 reacts with two equivalents of PMe2Ph with substitution of two carbonyl groups to give the substitution product [NEt4][Ru3(CO)6(PMe2Ph)2(η5-MeSiB10H10)] (8).

Observation of electroluminescence at room temperature from a ruthenium(II) bis-terpyridine complex and its use for preparing light-emitting electroc…

2005

A terpyridine ruthenium (II) complex containing a substituted and an unsubstituted terpyridine ligand was synthesized, and its luminescence properties were studied in a solid-state single-layer light-emitting electrochemical cell. The obtained devices emitted light of a very deep red color (CIE, x = 0.717 y = 0.282) at low external applied bias. It is the first example of an electroluminescence device based on a bis-chelated ruthenium complex. Its ambient atmosphere decay is remarkably different from analogous devices using tris-chelated ruthenium complexes.
