Photoelectrochemical characterization of anatase-rutile mixed TiO2 nanosponges

2016

This work studies the influence of using hydrodynamic conditions during anodization on the morphology and electrochemical properties of anatase/rutile mixed TiO2 nanotubes (Reynolds number, Re = 0) and nanosponges (Re > 0). To this purpose different techniques were used, such as: microscopy techniques (Field-Emission Scanning Electron Microscope, FE-SEM, and Confocal Laser-Raman Spectroscopy), Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS), Mott Schottky (MS) analysis and photoelectrochemical water splitting tests. This investigation demonstrates that the morphology of TiO2 nanostructures may be greatly affected due to the hydrodynamic conditions and it can be adjusted in order to increase th…

Study of the structural changes induced by air oxidation in Ti–Si–N hard coatings.

2008

International audience; 3-μm thick Ti–Si–N coatings were deposited on polished X38CrMoV5 substrates by sputtering a composite Ti–Si target in Ar–N2 reactive mixture. Oxidation tests were performed in air at 700 °C during 2 h. Whatever the silicon content in the range 0–4 at.%, no silicon containing compound was detected by XRD before air oxidation and only the TiN phase was evidenced. The mean grain size estimated from the full width at half maximum of the TiN (111) diffraction peak was close to 10 nm. As commonly reported for Ti–Si–N films, the hardness showed a maximum at 51 GPa versus the Si content. After oxidation of the TiN film, XRD and micro-Raman analyses revealed the occurrence of…

Photocatalytic Degradation of 4-nitrophenol in aqueous suspension by using polycristalline TiO2 samples impregnated with a Cu(II)-phthalocyanine

2002

In this paper, the preparation of polycrystalline TiO2 samples impregnated with a modified Cu(II)-phthalocyanine (TiO2–CuPc) is reported along with an investigation on the photocatalytic behavior of this system compared with bare TiO2 (both in the anatase and rutile form) and with TiO2 samples impregnated with not functionalized commercial phthalocyanine (TiO2–CuPc) or with metal free phthalocyanine (TiO2–Pc). The photocatalytic degradation of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) was studied as a probe reaction. The presence of modified CuPc showed to be beneficial only for TiO2 (anatase) while the commercial not functionalized CuPc also slightly for both TiO2 (anatase) and TiO2 (rutile). The metal free Pc…

Nanostructured Solids from Freeze-Dried Precursors: Multigram Scale Synthesis of TiO2 -Based Powders

2012

Nanocrystalline TiO2 and Ti1−xVxO2 (x = 0.01) powders have been prepared by thermal decomposition, in air, of amorphous precursors resulting from the freeze-drying of appropriate solutions. In addition, TiO2−xNy (anatase and rutile) and TiOxNy (rock-salt) have been prepared by thermal treatment in ammonia of a crystalline precursor (TiO2 obtained at 673 K). TEM and SEM images, as well as the analysis of the X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns, show the nanoparticulated character of those solids obtained at low temperatures, with typical particle sizes in the 10–20 nm range when prepared at 673 K. The UV–Vis results indicate both the insertion of V in the anatase lattice and the feasibility of …

Hydrothermal synthesis of well-dispersed ultrafine N-doped TiO2 nanoparticles with enhanced photocatalytic activity under visible light

2010

Abstract Ultrafine nitrogen-doped TiO 2 nanoparticles with narrow particle size distribution, good dispersion, and high surface area were synthesized in the presence of urea and PEG-4000 via a hydrothermal procedure. TEM observation, N 2 adsorption, XRD, UV–vis spectroscopy, the Raman spectroscopy and XPS analysis were conducted to characterize the synthesized TiO 2 particles. The synthesized TiO 2 particles were a mixture of 49.5% anatase and 50.5% rutile with a size of around 5 nm. The photocatalytic activities were tested in the degradation of an aqueous solution of a reactive Brilliant Blue KN-R under both UV and visible light. The synthesized TiO 2 particles showed much higher photocat…

TiO2 nanostructures prepared by ferrocene/cobalt catalyst agents

2008

We present the growth and characterization of TiO2 nanocrystals. Nanostructured growth is obtained in a low-pressure CVD system by using an organometallic precursor Ti(OC3H7)4 as both the Ti and O source catalyzed by both ferrocene (an organometallic precursor) and cobalt metallic clusters prepared by the microwave-assisted polyol method. Two kinds of TiO2 structures were obtained in the cobalt clusters: a) pine-tree like (with short-leaf structure) and b) long-leaf structures as large as a few micrometers in size and both under 10 nm in thickness. Long-leaf TiO2 structures were grown at cobalt grain boundaries. For the growth conditions utilized, the TiO2 structures are composed of both an…

Photoluminescence: A very sensitive tool to detect the presence of anatase in rutile phase electrospun TiO 2 nanofibers

2015

Abstract This paper reports on the synthesis and the characterization of titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanofibers prepared by electrospinning. The samples were annealed at various temperatures in air for 4 h. The as-spun and annealed TiO2/PVP composite nanofibers were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy analysis (EDX), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy and photoluminescence (PL). The results show that the heat treatment has an effect on the crystallization process. Even if the XRD data shows a complete anatase-to-rutile transition in the TiO2 nanofibers at 900 °C, photoluminescence reveals a small portion of anatase in rutile sample.…

A recipe for the use of rutile in sedimentary provenance analysis

2012

Abstract Rutile has received considerable attention in the last decade as a valuable petrogenetic indicator mineral. Based on both new and previously published data, we carve out advantages and pitfalls regarding TiO 2 -minerals in sedimentary provenance analysis. This results in a recipe for the use of rutile in provenance studies. The main points are: Rutile geochemistry from different grain size fractions does not differ systematically, and hence rutiles should be extracted from the fraction containing the most rutile grains (usually 63–200 μm). Similarly, different magnetic susceptibility of rutile does not systematically imply different trace element composition. Before interpretation …

Photocatalytic Selective Oxidation of 5-(Hydroxymethyl)-2-furaldehyde to 2,5-Furandicarbaldehyde in Water by Using Anatase, Rutile, and Brookite TiO2…

2013

5-(Hydroxymethyl)-2-furaldehyde (HMF) was selectively oxidized to 2,5-furandicarbaldehyde (FDC) in; aqueous medium by using home prepared (HP) anatase, rutile, and brookite TiO2 nanoparticles. HP samples were prepared via a sol-gel method by using TiCl4 as the TiO2 precursor. Commercial TiO2 catalysts were also used for, comparison. All samples were characterized by BET specific surface area, XRD, TGA, and SEM, and the reactivity results showed that HP catalysts are predominantly amorphous and give rise to selectivities toward FDC more than twice that of commercial and well crystallized catalysts.
