Stability improvement of PMMA and Lumogen® coatings for hybrid white LEDs
2014
Hybrid white LEDs employing perylene-based dyes for the frequency down-conversion of blue light, generated by a standard inorganic source, suffer from colour rendering variations due to the degradation of the organic molecule under prolonged irradiation. To avoid such inconvenient, proper encapsulation of the dyes in resins or other polymer matrices can prevent their accelerated ageing; nevertheless, embedding polymers can also exhibit significant bleaching caused by chemico-physical agents. Among all, polymethyl methacrilate (PMMA) is one of the most used materials for the fabrication of hybrid LEDs' colour conversion coatings, therefore its stability needs to be investigated.
Highlights of metal ion-based photochemical switches
2014
Abstract Selected metal complexes behaving as photochemical switches, mostly operating by light emission/absorption without the intervention of any added chemical species, are reviewed. First, the switching mechanisms are analyzed to offer readers an easier understanding of the described systems. Examples of photochemical switching based on complexation/decomplexation processes and photo-bistable systems, comprising metal complexes with azobenzene, azopyridine, diarylethene, spirocyclic and rhodamine ligands, make the central body of the review. These examples were chosen to provide an overview of the evolution of metal-ion based photochemical switches, collecting together historical cases …
Acceptor Concentration Dependence of Förster Resonance Energy Transfer Dynamics in Dye–Quantum Dot Complexes
2014
The dynamics of the photoinduced Forster resonance energy transfer (FRET) in a perylene diimide–quantum dot organic–inorganic hybrid system has been investigated by femtosecond time-resolved absorption spectroscopy. The bidentate binding of the dye acceptor molecules to the surface of CdSe/CdS/ZnS multishell quantum dots provides a well-defined dye-QD geometry for which the efficiency of the energy transfer reaction can be easily tuned by the acceptor concentration. In the experiments, the spectral characteristics of the chosen FRET pair facilitate a selective photoexcitation of the quantum dot donor. Moreover, the acceptor related transient absorption change that occurs solely after energy…
A Bis‐Acridinium Macrocycle as Multi‐Responsive Receptor and Selective Phase‐Transfer Agent of Perylene
2020
A bis‐acridinium cyclophane incorporating switchable acridinium moieties linked by a 3,5‐dipyridylanisole spacer was studied as a multi‐responsive host for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon guests. Complexation of perylene was proven to be the most effective and was characterized in particular by a charge transfer band as signal output. Effective catch and release of the guest was triggered by both chemical (proton/hydroxide) and redox stimuli. Moreover, the dicationic host was also easily switched between organic and perfluorocarbon phases for application related to the enrichment of perylene from a mixture of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. peerReviewed
Substanssi dualismi v. filosofinen behaviorismi
2017
Hänelle minä-substanssi edustaa sellaista, jolla on kattavat piirteet.
Nickel(II) 3,4;9,10-perylenediimide bis-phosphonate pentahydrate: A metal-organic ferromagnetic dye
2012
The new metal organic compound nickel(II) 3,4;9,10-perylenediimide bis-phosphonate pentahydrate, i.e. Ni-2[(PDI-BP)-(H2O)(2)]center dot 3H(2)O (1), has been synthesized and its structural and magnetic properties have been studied. Reaction of 3,4;9,10-perylenediimide bisphosphonate (PDI-BP, hereafter) ligand and nickel chloride in water resulted in the precipitation of a red and poorly crystalline solid (1). As the solid shows a poor crystalline organization of aggregates, the energy dispersive X-ray diffraction analysis (EDXD) technique has been used to obtain short-range order structural information of the single nanoaggregates by radial distribution function analysis. The overall structu…
Lipid and apoprotein composition of HDL in partial or complete CETP deficiency
2012
Hyperalphalipoproteinemia, as observed in patients who are either homozygous or heterozygous for cholesteryl ester transfer protein (CETP) deficiency, has been shown to be associated with striking changes in apolipoprotein size distribution, namely, of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) and HDL-like particles. We compared the effect of varying degrees of CETP activity on the HDL apolipoprotein profile in Caucasian CETP-deficient subjects and following pharmacological decrease in CETP activity, using Size Exclusion Chromatography followed by Reverse Phase Protein Array (SEC RPA). The main HDL-associated apolipoproteins (Apo), i.e. ApoA-I, ApoA-II, ApoC-I, and ApoC-III, co-eluted with the HDL pea…
eNOS Activation by HDL Is Impaired in Genetic CETP Deficiency.
2014
Mutations in the CETP gene resulting in defective CETP activity have been shown to cause remarkable elevations of plasma HDL-C levels, with the accumulation in plasma of large, buoyant HDL particles enriched in apolipoprotein E. Genetic CETP deficiency thus represents a unique tool to evaluate how structural alterations of HDL impact on HDL atheroprotective functions. Aim of the present study was to assess the ability of HDL obtained from CETP-deficient subjects to protect endothelial cells from the development of endothelial dysfunction. HDL isolated from one homozygous and seven heterozygous carriers of CETP null mutations were evaluated for their ability to down-regulate cytokine-induced…
