Heterogeneous Photocatalysis and Photoelectrocatalysis: From Unselective Abatement of Noxious Species to Selective Production of High-Value Chemicals
2015
Heterogeneous photocatalysis and photoelectrocatalysis have been considered as oxidation technologies to abate unselectively noxious species. This article focuses instead on the utilization of these methods for selective syntheses of organic molecules. Some promising reactions have been reported in the presence of various TiO2 samples and the important role played by the amorphous phase has been discussed. The low solubility of most of the organic compounds in water limits the utilization of photocatalysis. Dimethyl carbonate has been proposed as an alternative green organic solvent. The recovery of the products by coupling photocatalysis with pervaporation membrane technology seems to be a…
Gas-Phase Photolysis of Hg(I) Radical Species: A New Atmospheric Mercury Reduction Process
2019
The efficient gas-phase photoreduction of Hg(II) has recently been shown to change mercury cycling significantly in the atmosphere and its deposition to the Earth's surface. However, the photolysis of key Hg(I) species within that cycle is currently not considered. Here we present ultraviolet-visible absorption spectra and cross-sections of HgCl, HgBr, HgI, and HgOH radicals, computed by high-level quantum-chemical methods, and show for the first time that gas-phase Hg(I) photoreduction can occur at time scales that eventually would influence the mercury chemistry in the atmosphere. These results provide new fundamental understanding of the photobehavior of Hg(I) radicals and show that the …
Chemical and electrochemical behaviour of 4,4’,4’’,4’’’-tetrakis(dimethylamino)-tetraphenylethylene in an oxidant environment: Toward a new sensor fo…
2020
Abstract Electrochromic compounds are suitable candidates for being used in sensor design. Here we report the use of 4,4’,4’’,4’’’-tetrakis(dimethylamino)-tetraphenylethylene for detecting both NO2 and SO2. Whereas the sensing mechanism in the case of nitrogen dioxide is a simple chemical oxidation reaction, in the case of sulfur dioxide, the mechanism is much more complex and the reaction requires the presence of t-butylhydroperoxide to take place. By modifying the detection conditions both compounds can be detected in gas phase. Additionally, a wide electrochemical study has been carried out to understand the role played by the t-butylhydroperoxide in the reaction with sulfur dioxide.
Single-electron self-exchange between cage hydrocarbons and their radical cations in the gas phase.
2010
We show that the radical cations of adamantane (C(10)H(16)(*+), 1H(*+)) and perdeuteroadamantane (C(10)D(16)(*+), 1D(*+)) are stable species in the gas phase. The radical cation of adamantylideneadamantane (C(20)H(28)(*+), 2H(*+)) is also stable (as in solution). By using the natural (13)C abundances of the ions, we determine the rate constants for the reversible isergonic single-electron transfer (SET) processes involving the dyads 1H(*+)/1H, 1D(*+)/1D and 2H(*+)/2H. Rate constants for the reaction 1H(*+)+1D 1H+1D(*+) are also determined and Marcus' cross-term equation is shown to hold in this case. The rate constants for the isergonic processes are extremely high, practically collision-co…
Modeling of the role of conformational dynamics in kinetics of the antigen-antibody interaction in heterogeneous phase.
2012
[EN] A novel approach that may potentially be used to study biomolecular interactions including the simultaneous determination of structural and kinetic binding parameters is described in this Article for the first time. It allows a rigid distinction between the possible reaction mechanisms of biomolecular recognition, induced fit and conformational selection. The relative importance of the two pathways is determined not by comparing rate constants but the structural aspects of the interaction instead. So the exact location of antigen molecules with respect to the capture antibody is depicted experimentally, avoiding the use of X-ray crystallography. The proposed pattern is applied to study…
Multiscaling and the classification of continuous phase transitions
1992
Multiscaling of the free energy is obtained by generalizing the classification of phase transitions proposed by Ehrenfest. The free energy is found to obey a new generalized scaling form which contains as special cases standard and multiscaling forms. The results are obtained by analytic continuation from the classification scheme of Ehrenfest.
Nonlinear optical properties of low molecular organic glasses formed by triphenyl modified chromophores
2012
The series of organic molecular glasses have been studied as possible candidates for nonlinear optical (NLO) applications. Amorphous phase formation of investigated materials is ensured by the presence of bulky triphenyl substituents in molecular structure of NLO chromophores. Linear optical properties as well as NLO coefficients and thermal stability of NLO activity for the 13 molecular materials in glassy thin solid films have been determined. For the benzylidene-1,3-indandione chromophore containing compound the highest d33 value equal to 280 pm/V was measured under the 1064 nm excitation. Among the investigated compounds uppermost achieved thermal sustainability of NLO response was 108 …
In-gas-cell laser ionization studies of plutonium isotopes at IGISOL
2016
Abstract In-gas-cell resonance laser ionization has been performed on long-lived isotopes of Pu at the IGISOL facility, Jyvaskyla. This initiates a new programme of research towards high-resolution optical spectroscopy of heavy actinide elements which can be produced in sufficient quantities at research reactors and transported to facilities elsewhere. In this work a new gas cell has been constructed for fast extraction of laser-ionized elements. Samples of 238–240,242 Pu and 244 Pu have been evaporated from Ta filaments, laser ionized, mass separated and delivered to the collinear laser spectroscopy station. Here we report on the performance of the gas cell through studies of the mass spec…
DNA ploidy and S-phase fraction, but not p53 or NM23-H1 expression, predict outcome in colorectal cancer patients. Result of a 5-year prospective stu…
2002
Purpose: The aim of this study was to determine TP53 and NM23-H1 immunoreactivity, DNA ploidy, and S-phase fraction (SPF) in a series of 160 patients undergoing resective surgery for primary operable colorectal cancer (CRC) and to establish whether these alterations have any clinical value in predicting CRC patients' prognosis. Methods: TP53 and NM23-H1 expressions were evaluated on paraffin-embedded tissue by immunohistochemistry and DNA-ploidy and SPF on frozen tissue by flow-cytometric analysis. Results: The median follow-up time in our study group was 71 months (range 34-115 months). P53 protein expression was associated with distal tumors (P < 0.05) and DNA aneuploid tumors (P < …
Nm-23-H1 expression does not predict clinical survival in colorectal cancer patients
2003
The gene Nm23, which encodes for a nucleoside diphosphate kinase, has been defined as a metastasis-suppressor gene because of the inverse correlation between its expression and the metastatic capacity of the tumor cells. For colorectal cancer, however, the findings are equivocal. The aim of our study was to assess, in 160 patients undergoing surgery for colorectal cancer (CRC), the expression of the Nm23-H1 protein and to evaluate its possible associations with traditional clinicopathologic variables, with DNA-ploidy and proliferative activity (S-phase fraction, SPF), and with disease-free and overall survival of patients. Nm23-H1 expressions were evaluated on paraffin-embedded tissue by im…
