Passive millimeter wave image classification with large scale Gaussian processes
2017
Passive Millimeter Wave Images (PMMWIs) are being increasingly used to identify and localize objects concealed under clothing. Taking into account the quality of these images and the unknown position, shape, and size of the hidden objects, large data sets are required to build successful classification/detection systems. Kernel methods, in particular Gaussian Processes (GPs), are sound, flexible, and popular techniques to address supervised learning problems. Unfortunately, their computational cost is known to be prohibitive for large scale applications. In this work, we present a novel approach to PMMWI classification based on the use of Gaussian Processes for large data sets. The proposed…
Geographical variation in pharmacological prescription
2009
Promoting rational drug administration in treatments is one of the most important issues in Public Health. Bayesian hierarchical models are a very useful tool for incorporating geographical information into the analysis of pharmacological prescription data. They allow the mapping of spatial components which express the trend of geographical variation. In addition, these models are able to deal with uncertainty in a sequential way through prior distributions on parameters and hyperparameters. Bayes' theorem combines all types of information and provides the posterior distribution which is computed through Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) simulation methods. Simulated data for pharmacological …
Technique of Statistical Validation of Rival Models for Fatigue Crack Growth Process and Its Identification
2011
The development of suitable models of stochastic crack growth process is important for the reliability analysis of fatigued structures as well as the scheduling of inspection and repair/replacement maintenance. Based on modifications of the solution of the deterministic differential equation for the crack growth rate, where a stochastic nature of this rate is expressed by a random disturbance embedded in the solution of the differential equation, the simple stochastic models are presented for practical applications. Each of these models represents a stochastic version of the solution of the Paris-Erdogan law equation. The models take into account the random disturbance parameters while main…
A Saturation Model of the Synchronous Reluctance Motor and its Identification by Genetic Algorithms
2018
This paper proposes a complete saturation model of the Synchronous Reluctance Motor (Syn1231), accounting for both the self-saturation and cross-saturation effects. This model is based on an analytical relationship between the stator flux and current components, and is characterized by parameters presenting an interesting physical interpretation, differently from many other saturation model in the scientific literature. It proposes also an identification technique of such a model based on stand-still tests, without the need of locking the rotor. The proposed saturation model permits the complete description of the magnetic behaviour of the machine with 8 parameters, fewer than those require…
Benchmarking Wilms’ tumor in multisequence MRI data: why does current clinical practice fail? Which popular segmentation algorithms perform well?
2019
Wilms' tumor is one of the most frequent malignant solid tumors in childhood. Accurate segmentation of tumor tissue is a key step during therapy and treatment planning. Since it is difficult to obtain a comprehensive set of tumor data of children, there is no benchmark so far allowing evaluation of the quality of human or computer-based segmentations. The contributions in our paper are threefold: (i) we present the first heterogeneous Wilms' tumor benchmark data set. It contains multisequence MRI data sets before and after chemotherapy, along with ground truth annotation, approximated based on the consensus of five human experts. (ii) We analyze human expert annotations and interrater varia…
Evidence-Based Knowledge Management: an approach to effectively promote good health-care decision-making in the Information Era.
2009
The sharing of information and the growth of knowledge together represent a foundation for the promotion of quality improvement of health care systems. This paper concerns knowledge, not only from an epistemological point of view, but also from a pragmatic one. In our paper, knowledge is discussed as the hub to promote better decision making and continuous professional development. Effective thinking is particularly needed. The critical point is to think about how health care systems can develop both an effective knowledge management network and how health-care organizations can actually be based on it. In this way, knowledge and knowledge hierarchy are defined according to Russel Achkoff's…
Education for a sustainable future at the University: the challenge of teachers' training
2012
Sacred Music Production and Circulation in Sixteenth-Century Palermo: The Inventories of Giovanni Santoro (1550) and Luis Ruiz (1595)
2016
Preliminary investigations on indirect competition among Italian employers’ associations, and the relevant effects on collective bargaining
2022
MEASURING THE CONSUMERS' LEVEL OF SATISFACTION FOR ONLINE FOOD DURING THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC
2020
Given this scientific framework, the aim of this work is to investigate the level of satisfaction of consumer in buying food by means of online grocery shopping channels during this grave COVID-19 pandemic, starting from the description of the main factors that have characterized the online spending behaviour. The analysis was carried out by collecting data deriving from an online questionnaire administrated to an Italian ‘snowball’ sample through social networks and emails, in the March-May 2020 time range. The questionnaire was first tested by experts in online purchasing channels and by scientific representatives. 249 were the final respondents that completed the survey. About 25% did no…
