During donor tissue preparation for Descemet stripping automated endothelial keratoplasty (DSAEK), either microkeratome or femtosecond laser can be used for intrastromal cutting. From 1999 through 2005 in Alcoi, Spain, incidence of legionellosis was continually high. Over the next 4 years, incidence was lower, but an increase in July 2009 led health authorities to declare an epidemic outbreak. A molecular epidemiology investigation showed that the allelic profiles for all Legionella pneumophila samples from the 2009 outbreak patients were the same, thus pointing to a common genetic origin for their infections, and that they were identical to that of the organism that had caused the previous outbreaks. Persistent Legionella Infection in a Patient after Bone Marrow Transplantation

ABSTRACT We report on a patient who developed Legionella pneumonia after bone marrow transplantation. Despite appropriate antibiotic treatment, disease progressed. The patient developed a lung abscess from which Legionella and Prevotella were isolated. Cure was achieved by surgical resection. The resected material was sterile, but 16S ribosomal DNA analysis revealed Legionella DNA.

According to the findings of some recent studies, the centenarians' offspring appear to represent a promising model for research on longevity and healthy aging. This study compares the health status and the functional status of three groups of subjects: 1. individuals with two long-lived parents (one of whom centenarian), 2. individuals with only one long-lived (centenarian) parent, and 3. individuals with no long-lived parents. Our aim was to evaluate the impact of recommendations of a French consensus conference published in 2000 on initial PD therapy. We identified 308 PD patients as part of a population-based study performed within the Mutualité Sociale Agricole in five French districts (2007). Neurologists confirmed PD diagnosis. Angioma-Like Pseudometamorphosis in Wilms' Tumors Subjected to Preoperative Radio- and Chemotherapy

Six Wilms' tumors (stage III-V), which had undergone preoperative irradiation and chemotherapy, were examined histologically. While mesenchymal and differentiated epithelial tumor elements were preserved to a large extent, blastemic tumor structures were almost completely lacking. Instead, pseudoangioma-like structures similar to cavernous hemangioma prevailed. As demonstrated by transitional pictures, the pseudoangioma-like pattern is a result of the fact that blastemic tumor elements are replaced by blood after therapy-induced necrosis and lysis. The clinical advantages of preoperative treatment are briefly discussed, especially for patients with advanced tumors.
