A combined molecular typing approach does not discriminate Legionella pneumophila serogroup 1 strains of a predominant sequence-based type in Palermo…

2009

Summary: The sequence-based type 1,4,3,1,1,1 of Legionella pneumophila sg.1 is predominant in the Palermo city environment since several years. In this study, extended sequence-based typing and pulsed field gel electrophoresis were used in a combined approach in the aim to enhance discriminatory power of the molecular typing procedures. However, probably due to a common environmental reservoir and genetic stability, most of the strains circulating in the geographic area under study belong to the same clone and are, consequently, indistinguishable by molecular typing. Investigations of clinical cases and tracing to their environmental source require caution and support from sound epidemiolog…

Use of ICS in COPD: From Blockbuster Medicine to Precision Medicine

2017

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a major cause of mortality worldwide, whose burden is expected to increase in the next decades, because of numerous risk factors, including the aging of the population. COPD is both preventable and treatable by an effective management including risk factor reduction, prevention, assessment, and treatment of acute exacerbations and co-morbidities. The available agents approved for COPD treatment are long-acting or ultra-long-acting β2-agonists (LABAs) and long-acting muscarinic antagonists (LAMAs) bronchodilators, as well as inhaled corticosteroids (ICS) in combination with LABAs. ICS use has been restricted only to selected COPD patients by th…

ANODAL TRANSCRANIAL DIRECT CURRENT STIMULATION (TDCS) APPLIED TO THE MOTOR CORTEX AMELIORATES FREEZING OF GAIT IN PATIENTS AFFECTED BY PARKINSON’S DI…

2012

Background: Progression of Parkinson’s disease (PD) is frequently characterized by the occurrence of freezing of gait (FOG), which generally does not improve with dopaminergic therapy and with current available surgical therapies. Recent evidences show that motor symptoms may be ameliorated by means of non-invasive brain stimulation techiniques in PD (transcranial current direct stimulation, TDCS; repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation, RTMS). Objective: To investigate the efficacy of anodal TDCS in the treatment of FOG in PD. Excitatory anodal tDCS was applied unilaterally to the motor and premotor cortices controlateral to the most affected leg. Methods: randomized, double-blind, sh…

SELENIUM AND AUTOIMMUNE THYROIDITIS

2023

Selenium (Se) is an essential trace element of pivotal importance to human health. Se is incorporated into selenoproteins (SePs) which have pleiotropic effects, including antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, and in the production of active thyroid hormone. These findings may explain the relationship between Se deficiency and pathogenesis of various human diseases including thyroid disorder. In line with these observations, the therapeutic effectiveness of Se supplementation has already been reported in patients with various thyroid diseases. However, there are still controversial data about the optimal dose of Se to be administered, as well as the duration and efficacy of treatment an…

Modelling students' mobility in Italy: an analysis of the determinants by combining individual and aggregated data

The migratory phenomenon consisting in the enrolment of some students in a University different from the one nearest to their place of origin goes under the name of students’ mobility (SM). This phenomenon can be studied for different territorial aggregations, depending on the aims and the availability of data. In Italy several analyses have been carried out to detect the determinants of such a phenomenon. Two approaches are mostly followed. The former considers the analysis of aggregate data (AD) flows, and it is aimed at detecting the characteristics of the Universities and the territories in which they are situated, the latter analyzes the determinants of SM on the grounds of the student…

Dendritic cell-based immunotherapy of malignant melanoma: success and limitations.

2007

Dendritic cells (DC) are professional antigen-presenting cells in the immune system which are able to induce primary T-cell responses. Because of their central role in the initiation of immune responses, DC are an important tool for tumor-antigen-specific immunotherapy of cancer. DC vaccination using tumor-antigen-loaded DC has led to tumor regression in individual advanced-stage cancer patients. However, there is a discrepancy between strong and antigen-specific T cell responses in vaccinated cancer patients detectable ex vivo and only weak clinical responses. In most cases the immune system of advanced stage IV cancer patients allows only a temporary anti-tumor response and increasing evi…
