This paper gives account of two sondages which were conducted to add some concrete evidences to the hypotesis of the existence of a new Forum in the unexcavated area beyond the Decumanus of Sabratha, North to the Temple of Hercules. The chronological hiatus between the Ist and the VIth Century A.D. could confirm the hypothesis of a change in the use of the area from a block of private houses to an open public space in direct connection with the construction of the Temple of Hercules. A conspicuos alteration of the stratigraphic sequence was caused by the three burials. A cippus with a cross would have marked a christian zone of the cemetery. L’opera si articola in due distinte parti: nella prima si presenta lo studio dell’Anfiteatro di Sabratha mentre nella seconda si propone un nuovo catalogo degli anfiteatri della provincia dell’Africa proconsolare. L’Anfiteatro di Sabratha, scavato e restaurato tra il 1924 e il 1926 dalla missione italiana diretta da Renato Bartoccini, era rimasto sostanzialmente inedito. Researchers at the University of Palermo, in collaboration with the CNR ITABC for the project PRIN 2008, they have made a preliminary study for an archaeological GIS divided into areas I-XI of Sabratha to gather information on the monuments already studied, or under study, and to promote analysis regarding the reuse of space in the Regiones III-V, after the destruction attributed to the earthquake on 21th of July 365. I luoghi di culto cristiani nel Foro e a Nord del Teatro di Sabratha hanno trasformato o obiliterato gli edifici di età romana e condizionato, attraendole a sé, la disposizione, di un cospicuo numero di sepolture. Altre tombe, non in contatto diretto con le basiliche, appaiono ubicate secondo criteri di non sempre immediata intellegibilità. Ciò in quanto sussistono ancora diverse aree della città non scavate che per estensione e ubicazione rendono difficile la comprensione di alcuni dettagli del suo sviluppo urbanistico e delle modalità in cui il tessuto cittadino fu rimodulato e riutilizzato in età cristiana. Si riassumono le vicende costruttive dell'isolato 7 della c.d. "Regio V" (Quartiere del Teatro) di Sabratha dalla costruzione del Tempio di Ercole e sue successive trasformazioni, fino alla sua completa distruzione e successiva occupazione dell'insula da parte di povere abitazioni con annessa necropoli di età cristiana.

After some considerations about the chronology of Theatre of Sabratha and on the internal organization of pulpitum reliefs, this paper puts forward the hypothesis of the attribution to Apuleius of the most part of the iconographic programme. In particular, Florida and Metamorphosis are suggested as direct sources of some scenes. The reconsideration of the pulpitum's first scene, starting from the left, previously interpreted as a sort of theatral academy, confrims this hypothesis. The scene represents a group of philosophers, strictly derived from the representation of the seven savants, as depicted on two well known mosaics. This volume, not a simple archaeological guide, adds to the description of the monuments and museums of Sabratha also some reflections on general themes as sculpture, urban developement, religious architecture, civic and domestic buildings, paintings and mosaics of the punico-hellenistic, Roman and Christian Sabratha. It also gives account of the researches of the Archaeological Mission of the Palermo University, directed by the late Professor Nicola Bonacasa, and it includes the contribution of external scholars, which very recently published some monuments of great interest.
La città e il suo porto

Nell’ambito del volume “Sabratha. Una guida a studi e ricerche degli ultimi 50 anni”, nel capitolo dedicato a “La città e il suo porto”, le sezioni relative a “Cultura abitativa e impianti produttivi” e a “Mosaici e apparati pittorici dall’abitato”, curate da A. Mandruzzato, propongono una ricostruzione dell’aspetto dei quartieri urbani durante l’età romana, e una descrizione dell’apparato decorativo di alcune case, dislocate in aree diverse della città.
