Cytokines with Possible Clinical Utility
1987
Biological response modifiers (BRM) are agents aimed at reducing tumor growth, not primarily by exerting direct cytotoxic effects but by modulation of tumor gene expression (e.g., induction of differentiation) or by enhancing host defense mechanisms directed against cancer cells. BRM as primary therapy or as adjuncts to cytotoxic agents in the treatment of cancers have attracted increasing interest in view of stagnating clinical results in many areas [1], and there is increasing evidence of in vitro and in vivo efficacy of these agents. Furthermore, advances in molecular biology suggesting that oncogenes and their products play a crucial role in oncogenesis support approaches to modulation …
Immagini devote del popolo indiano
2008
This volume, with the preface by Giovanni Filoramo, collects some of the sacred images of "Hinduism" of other religions born in India (Shikism, Buddhism), exhibited during the exhibition of the same name at the Antonio Pasqualino International Puppet Museum from November 22 to December 31. 2007. These cult images are venerated in temples, in private homes and on the streets throughout India. The central idea was to show the iconographic path that these paintings (or photographs) have had in the popular imagination. An informative caption corresponds to each "portrait".
Double stimuli-responsive polysaccharide block copolymers as green macrosurfactants for near-infrared photodynamic therapy
2019
The NIR absorbing photosensitizer phthalocyanine zinc (PC(Zn)) was stabilized in aqueous media as water-dispersible nanoparticles with a reduction- and pH-responsive full polysaccharide block copolymer. A cellular uptake and also photo switchable intracellular activity of the cargo upon irradiation at wavelengths in the near infrared region were shown. The block copolymer was synthesized by applying a copper-free click strategy based on a thiol exchange reaction, creating an amphiphilic double-stimuli-responsive mixed disulfide. The dual-sensitive polysaccharide micelles represent a non-toxic and biodegradable green macrosurfactant for the delivery of phthalocyanine zinc. By encapsulation i…

Conservative treatment of ectopic pregnancies using a single echo-guided injection of methotrexate into the gestational sac
1991
The authors describe the possibility of the conservative treatment of five early ectopic pregnancies. A single injection of methotrexate into the tubal gestational sac was performed under vaginal ultrasound guidance. In all five cases, a clear ectopic gestational sac could be visualized. The pregnancies dated from the 5th to the 7th week of amenorrhea. Strict ultrasound follow-up following injection showed a gradual reduction in the size of the tubal gestational sac. At the same time, plasma beta-hCG gradually decreased to zero after a maximum time period of 25 days. Subsequent hysterosalpingography performed on all of the women demonstrated bilateral normal patent tubes. It is concluded th…
Anti-inflammatory properties of lemon-derived extracellular vesicles are achieved through the inhibition of ERK/NF-κB signalling pathways
2022
Chronic inflammation is associated with the occurrence of several diseases. However, the side effects of anti-inflammatory drugs prompt the identification of new therapeutic strategies. Plant-derived extracellular vesicles (PDEVs) are gaining increasing interest in the scientific community for their biological properties. We isolated PDEVs from the juice of Citrus limon L. (LEVs) and characterized their flavonoid, limonoid and lipid contents through reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography coupled to electrospray ionization quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (RP-HPLC-ESI-Q-TOF-MS). To investigate whether LEVs have a protective role on the inflammatory process, murine a…
Cigarette smoke promotes inflammasome‐independent activation of caspase‐1 and ‐4 leading to gasdermin D cleavage in human macrophages
2022
Mechanisms and consequences of gasdermin D (GSDMD) activation in cigarette smoke (CS)-associated inflammation and lung disease are unknown. GSDMD is a downstream effector of caspase-1, -8, and -4. Upon cleavage, GSDMD generates pores into cell membranes. Different degrees of GSDMD activation are associated with a range of physiological outputs ranging from cell hyperactivation to pyroptosis. We have previously reported that in human monocyte-derived macrophages CS extract (CSE) inhibits the NLRP3 inflammasome and shifts the response to lipopolysaccharide (LPS) towards the TLR4-TRIF axis leading to activation of caspase-8, which, in turn, activates caspase-1. In the present work, we investig…
Inflammatory Response of the Ascidian Ciona intestinalis
2016
Abstract The Ciona intestinalis inflammatory response to several irritants appears to be composed of a complex reaction set. The cellular reactions in the tunic involve hemocyte infiltration, hemocyte and epidermis activities, vacuolization, and cell disruption, while cell products can contribute to form capsule components and/or cause a tunic wound. In this response, the involvement of the pharynx, as the main immune-competent organ, has been disclosed by a lipopolysaccharide challenge that upregulates innate immunity genes and transcription activation genes. The pharynx responds through hemocyte recruitment into the pharynx vessels, enhancement of galectin-like lectins in the serum hemoly…
Filmowe rozmowy na ekranie i przed ekranem. O wieloaspektowej dialogiczności filmu
2020
A Role for NFAT in Innate Immunity: Neutrophil Effector Functions in Patients after Allogeneic Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation Under Cyclospo…
2014
Abstract Background and Aims: Patients after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) suffer from immunodeficiency, in part due to long-term immunosuppressive medication e.g. by calcineurin inhibitors like cyclosporine A (CsA). Additionally, these patients have an increased risk for opportunistic fungal infections like invasive aspergillosis (IA). The nuclear factor of activated T cells (NFAT) is known as an important transcription factor in signaling-pathways downstream of calcineurin in the adaptive immune systems, e.g. in T cells, but also plays an important role in innate immune response as indicated by recent data in rodent models. These studies showed a relevant impac…
