The Obernai ’Neuen Brunnen’ necropolis in Lower Alsace yielded 29 tombs attributed to the Middle Neolithic. It was probably founded during the Early Grossgartach, at the end of the 48th century BC, and abandoned during the Roessen, perhaps during the Early Roessen, and in any case before the middle of the 46th century BC. The most original feature of this mortuary assemblage is that most of the tombs belong to the Planig-Friedberg period (the last stylistic phase of the Grossgartach) and the Roessen. Cerebellar learning of bio-mechanical functions of extra-ocular muscles: modeling by artificial neural networks

A control circuit is proposed to model the command of saccadic eye movements. Its wiring is deduced from a mathematical constraint, i.e. the necessity, for motor orders processing, to compute an approximate inverse function of the bio-mechanical function of the moving plant, here the bio-mechanics of the eye. This wiring is comparable to the anatomy of the cerebellar pathways. A predicting element, necessary for inversion and thus for movement accuracy, is modeled by an artificial neural network whose structure, deduced from physical constraints expressing the mechanics of the eye, is similar to the cell connectivity of the cerebellar cortex. Junceosides A-C, new triterpene saponins from Arenaria juncea.

Three novel triterpenoid saponins, junceosides A (1), B (2), and C (3), together with two known saponins have been isolated from the roots of Arenaria juncea. Their structures were elucidated using a combination of homo- and heteronuclear 2D NMR techniques (COSY, TOCSY, NOESY, HSQC, and HMBC) and by FABMS. Effect of the natural winemaking process applied at industrial level on the microbiological and chemical characteristics of wine.

The composition of yeast and lactic acid bacteria (LAB) communities and the chemical evolution of the large-scale commercial vinification of Catarratto IGT Sicilia, carried out under the biological regime, was followed from grape harvest until bottling. Simultaneously to the maximum growth of yeasts, LAB counts reached high level of concentration (6-7 log CFU mL(-1)) during the first steps of the alcoholic fermentation. Yeast identification was determined applying different molecular methods. The highest species biodiversity was observed on grape and must samples taken soon after pressing. Saccharomyces cerevisiae was detected at dominant concentrations during the entire winemaking process.…

Investigation of water transfer across thin layer biopolymer films by infrared spectroscopy

International audience; The investigation of the apparent diffusivity of water in thin layer iota-carrageenan-based films by FTIR-ATR spectroscopy clearly evidences the fundamental role of surface properties on water transfer. Water diffusivity in iota-carrageenan based biopolymer films ranges from 0.3 to 1.3 × 10−10 m2 s−1 and is thus 10–100 times lower than that in highly hydrated carrageenan gels. SIMSISAK – a Method to Model Nuclide Transport in the SISAK System

A computer model that calculates the transport yield of a nuclide through an arbitrary SISAK experimental set-up has been developed. The model is intended to be used for two types of calculations connected to chemical studies of the heaviest elements. If the production cross section and the nuclide half-life are known, it can be used to estimate the number of decay events to be expected at the detection site. Consequently, if the number of atoms decaying in the detection cells is known, it can be used to estimate the production cross section or the half-life, provided that one of these properties is known.

Application of fast solvent extraction processes to studies of exotic nuclides

Fast solvent extraction is a chemical separation method, which can be applied to study exotic nuclides. Since about 1970 the SISAK technique, which is an on-line method based on multi-stage solvent extraction separations, has been successfully used to investigate the nuclear properties of β-decaying nuclides with half-lives down to about one second. Profiling of RNA modifications by multiplexed stable isotope labelling

The combination of (15)N/(13)C stable isotope labelling (SIL) and LC-MS/MS revealed a total of 52 modifications in RNA from E. coli and yeast, including 10 previously undescribed modifications. Two modifications, N-ribosylnicotinamide and 2-methylthioadenosine, were newly detected in species hitherto thought not to contain these modifications.
