The Moral Calculus of Vocational Passion in Digital Gaming

The desire to “do what you love” energizes employment and engagement in creative industries such as digital gaming yet drains hobbyists and aspirants by normalizing expectations to sacrifice job security for passionate work. This article investigates how individuals regulate their aspirations through taken-for-granted trade-offs between vocational compromise and compensation. Transactional sex has been recognized as a major factor in the persistence of HIV/AIDS in Sub-Saharan Africa, yet it also has implications for the persistence of poverty. Using interview data collected between 2010 and 2015, this article examines how Muslim families in Dar es Salaam are affected by transactional sexual behavior.1 Examined are motives for transactional sex, how poor families view the purpose of marriage, and religious teachings and cultural beliefs about the onset of adulthood. Bioactive Constituents of Juniperus turbinata Guss. from La Maddalena Archipelago.

A comprehensive phytochemical study of Juniperus turbinata (Cupressaceae) collected from La Maddalena Archipelago (Sardinia, Italy) is reported. Both the essential oil and the ethanolic extract obtained from the aerial parts were analyzed. The essential oil appears to belong to a new chemotype compared to other Mediterranean juniper accessions, as it was favored by geographic isolation of the isles. It showed a low content of monoterpene hydrocarbons and -terpineol, ent-manoyl oxide, 1,10-di-epi-cubenol as the major constituents. The ethanolic fraction contained mainly diterpenoids. Phytochemical Analysis and Cytotoxicity Towards Multidrug-Resistant Leukemia Cells of Essential Oils Derived from Lebanese Medicinal Plants

Juniperus excelsa fruit essential oil as well as J. oxycedrus, Cedrus libani, and Pinus pinea wood essential oils have been obtained with yields between 2.2 ± 0.3 % to 3.4 ± 0.5 % and analyzed by gas chromatography. Sesquiterpenes mainly characterized C. libani and J. oxycedrus essential oils, while in P. pinea and J. excelsa, monoterpenes were the most abundant compounds. In J. oxycedrus, cis-calamenene (7.8 %), cuparene (3.8 %), and cis-thujopsenal (2.0 %) have been detected for the first time. Fruits from many citrus cultivars develop depressed areas in the flavedo (outer part of the peel) and albedo (inner part) following detachment. Although ultrastructural analysis may provide important information about multiple plant responses to stresses and external stimuli at the cell and tissue levels, and despite the proved efficacy of ethylene in reducing peel damage in citrus fruit, cytological responses of this horticultural crop to protective ethylene concentrations have not yet been reported. Background Glucocorticoid functions are markedly impaired in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The genotoxic effects of the antiblastic drug bleomycin were studied in the D7 strain of Saccharomyces cerevisiae and on its derivative mitochondrial mutant rho degree at different cellular concentrations of two drug metabolizing systems, glutathione (GSH) and cytochrome P-450. Bleomycin mutagenic activity was evaluated as frequencies of mitotic gene conversion, reversion and total aberrations under different physiological conditions. Intracellular pH-dependent efflux of the fluorescent probe pyranine in the yeast Yarrowia lipolytica.

International audience; 8-Hydroxypyrene-1,3,6-trisulfonic acid (pyranine) can be used as a vital intracellular pH (pH(i)) indicator. In the yeast Yarrowia lipolytica, a partial efflux of the probe was detected by using the pH-independent wavelength of 415 nm. A simplified correction of the fluorescent signals was applied, enabling to show for this species a good near-neutral pH(i) maintenance capacity in a pH 3.9 medium. Octanoic acid, which is known to have toxic effects on yeast, decreased the pH(i) and increased the 260-nm-absorbing compounds leakage.
