The Market Reorientation of Farms: The Case of Olive Growing in the Nebrodi Area

In addition to safeguarding the landscape, olive growing makes a unique contribution to protecting the environment and the agricultural ecosystem. Olive growing in mountainous and hilly areas is severely constrained by structural limitations. Rural tourism can be a potential strategy to increase the competitiveness of olive-growing activities. After an initial analysis of the relationship between landscape, tourism, and olive growing, this study focused on olive growing in the Nebrodi area. In particular, we examined two case studies of olive farms to analyze the related production costs and market positioning strategies.

Although iron‐catalysis provides a powerful alternative to the more conventional palladium and nickel in the cross‐coupling arena, the major limitation is the necessity for carcinogenic N‐methylpyrrolidone as a co‐solvent in the vast majority of catalytic reactions. Herein, we introduce N‐methylcaprolactam as an efficient, non‐toxic and practical dipolar aprotic solvent for iron‐catalyzed C(sp2)−C(sp3) alkylative cross‐coupling of aryl chlorides and tosylates. In particular if one tries to establish a corresponding notion of Wilsonian renormalization, or coarse graining, it presents a major conceptual and technical difficulty usually. Fibre-reinforced plastic (FRP) composites are extensively used to retrofit civil structures. However, the quality and the characteristics of the bond between the FRP and the structure are critical to ensure the efficacy of the retrofit. For this reason, effective non-destructive evaluation (NDE) methods are often necessary to assess the bonding conditions. Impact behaviour of flax/epoxy composite plates

This paper presents an experimental investigation of the impact behaviour of flax/epoxy composite plates submitted to low-velocity transverse impact. Low energy drop-weight impact tests have been performed on two types of quasi-isotropic flax/epoxy composites, rectangularly shaped with edges lengths of 142 mm × 94 mm and 2.85 mm thick. Residual properties have been assessed by compression after impact tests. A detailed description of damage development, especially the increase of the rear face crack with respect to the impact energy is given by the microscopic observation. The control of the residual lifetimes of carbon fibre-reinforced composite pressure vessels

International audience; The understanding of the degradation of carbon fibre composites, with emphasis on the use of these composites in filament-wound pressure vessels, is explored. Earlier studies by many researchers have led to a general appreciation of the mechanisms involved; however, only recently have both computational power and experimental techniques become sufficiently developed to allow for the use of quantitative analyses. Application of the ESR spectrometry to evaluate the original dose in irradiated dried fruit

The identification of irradiated dried fruit can be achieved by means of the electron spin resonance (ESR) spectrometry, as recommended by the European Community, since ionizing radiation induces free radicals in cellulose, a constituent of the shell. The aim of this work was to use the ESR spectrometry also as a quantitative procedure to evaluate the original dose in irradiated dried fruits, using the additive dose method. Little shell pieces, taken from nuts, chestnuts, peanuts and pistachios, were irradiated at “original” dose values in the range 1 to 8 kGy, and the ESR signal intensity was measured.
