Medical simulation for ICU staff: does it influence safety of care?
2016
Dear Editor, We read with great interest the article by Garrouste-Orgeas et al. entitled ‘‘Understanding medical errors and adverse events in ICU patients’’ [1]. In particular, two sentences caught our attention: ‘‘medical errors are the consequence of multiple actions of a whole chain of organizational and humans interaction...’’ and ‘‘leadership, trust, respect, open communication, non-punitive actions and coordination of behavior are essential for a multidisciplinary ICU team to provide safe care’’. In a teamworking setting like the ICU, shared knowledge and non-technical skills are pivotal to deliver a high quality of care and to reduce medical errors. Medical simulation has been demons…

Future perspectives of anticholinergics for the treatment of asthma in adults and children

2019
Despite major advances in therapeutic interventions and the availability of detailed treatment guidelines, a high proportion of patients with symptomatic asthma remain uncontrolled. Asthma management is largely guided by the Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) strategy and is based on a backbone of inhaled corticosteroid (ICS) therapy with the use of additional therapies to achieve disease control. Inhaled long-acting bronchodilators alone and in combination are the preferred add-on treatment options. Although long-acting muscarinic antagonists (LAMAs) are a relatively recent addition to disease management recommendations for asthma, tiotropium has been extensively studied in a large clinic…
Benefits of area-wide traffic calming measures: outcomes still to assess
2008
The role of traffic calming schemes in urban network management is mainly to minimize undesirable effect of traffic in residential areas; in this context accident reduction can be a realistic objective. Several studies, indeed, inform us that traffic calming is a major part of the treatments available to reduce road accidents in urban areas. Paradoxically the increase of the accident rate per kilometre travelled has been observed in the urban context as result of the wellknown accident migration phenomenon. In connection to these considerations, the effectiveness of traffic calming measures on road safety is discussed in this paper. Then, after a synthetic exposition of the conceptual formu…
Advances in microgeophysics for engineering and cultural heritage
2009
A large number of unconventional investigations have been implemented, tested, and validated in the field of microgeophysics, with the aim being to solve specific diagnostic and/or monitoring problems regarding civil engineering and cultural heritage studies. The investigations were carried out using different tomographic 2D and 3D approaches as well as different energy sources, namely sonic, ultrasonic and electromagnetic (radar) waves, electric potential fields, and infrared thermography. Many efforts have been made to modify instruments and procedures in order to improve the resolution of the surveys as well as to greatly reduce the time of the measurements without any loss of informatio…
Usefulness of Midline Catheters versus Peripheral Venous Catheters in an Inpatient Unit: A Pilot Randomized Clinical Trial
2022
Canalization of vascular accesses is one of the most used techniques in hospitalization units. When talking about peripherally inserted catheters, we can differentiate between peripheral intravenous catheters (PIVC), midline catheters, and long peripheral catheters (LPC). Midline catheters are rarely used despite being recommended for intravenous therapies lasting more than six days. This research is a pilot study of a longitudinal clinical trial. It aims to compare the complications associated with intravenous therapy between the control group (CG) with a PIVC and the experimental group (EG) with a midline in an Internal Medicine Unit of a Spanish hospital for three months. In this study, …
Test Methods for the Evaluation of Manufacturing Mobile Manipulator Safety
2016
International audience; This paper presents a test methodology for evaluating the safety of mobile manipulators (robot arms mounted on mobile bases). This methodology addresses the safety concerns relevant to modern, agile, manufacturing practices in which mobile manipulators will play a significant role. We consider 1) the unique capabilities and anticipated uses of mobile manipulators and 2) the potential exemptions and special cases in which their behavior may be unpredictable or otherwise contrary to the safety requirements. Finally, we define metrics for assessing compliance with functional safety requirements and anticipated performance.
An EEMD Aided Comparison of Time Histories and Its Application in Vehicle Safety
2017
In the context of signal processing, the comparison of time histories is required for different purposes, especially for the model validation of vehicle safety. Most of the existing metrics focus on the mathematical value only. Therefore, they suffer the measuring errors, disturbance, and uncertainties and can hardly achieve a stable result with a clear physical interpretation. This paper proposes a novel scheme of time histories comparison to be used in vehicle safety analysis. More specifically, each signal for comparison is decomposed into a trend signal and several intrinsic mode functions (IMFs) by ensemble empirical mode decomposition. The trend signals reflect the general variation a…
Chemical-Based Methodologies to Extend the Shelf Life of Fresh Fish—A Review
2021
Due to its characteristics, fresh fish is a highly perishable food with a very short shelf-life under refrigeration. Several methods have been introduced to slow down its deterioration, such as by means of oxygen depletion of the food package (vacuum packaging), or by changing the natural atmosphere that is in contact with the fresh fish (modified atmosphere packaging), or by the use of chemicals generally recognized as safe: such compounds can be directly applied (by dipping or spraying) or incorporated into packaging materials and slowly migrate to the product, exerting a hurdle effect against microbial development and lipid oxidation (active packaging). This review aims to cover the most…
FACTORES HUMANOS ASOCIADOS A LOS ACCIDENTES MORTALES DE MOTOCICLETAS SCOOTER EN ESPAÑA
2017
Effectiveness of adalimumab for ulcerative colitis: A multicentre, retrospective study of clinical practice in Italy.
2022
Abstract Background Adalimumab is used to treat ulcerative colitis, but additional effectiveness and safety data are needed. Patients and methods This retrospective study considered adults with ulcerative colitis treated with adalimumab at 19 hospitals. Clinical data were collected from the start of treatment, after 2, 6 and 12 months, and at the last visit. Outcome measures of effectiveness were treatment duration, reasons for discontinuation and colectomy. Results We studied 381 patients treated with adalimumab for a median of 12.1 months. Disease activity at the start of treatment was moderate to severe in 262 cases (68.8%) and endoscopic activity was moderate to severe in 339 cases (89.…
