Instrument intercomparison study on cloud droplet size distribution measurements: Holography vs. laser optical particle counter

During the EUROTRAC Ground Based Cloud Experiment (GCE) 1990, a newly developed HODAR (Holographic Droplet and Aerosol Recording) was operated for the first time to measure cloud droplet size distributions by recording Fraunhofer in-line holograms of small cloud sample volumes in situ and analyzing the holographic images in the laboratory.
Inverse task for evaluation of particle size distribution of polydisperse magnetic fluids

AbstractThe method of inverse task was used to analyze three different physical phenomena. The particle size distributions were reconstructed from the magnetization curve, dynamic light scattering and magnetic birefringence relaxation data. The results thus obtained for one real magnetic fluid sample are different; they characterize the physical nature of the phenomena. All three methods may be used to determine intrinsic sample properties.
Probing slow fluctuations in nonergodic systems: Interleaved sampling technique

We present a new dynamic light scattering scheme to obtain ensemble-averaged correlation functions of slow fluctuations in non-ergodic systems in an efficient way. On a rotating sample, a large set of separate correlation functions is measured in parallel, for each independent orientational component of the sample’ density fluctuations. The ensemble-averaged correlation function spans a lag time range from 1 to 104 s. We describe our first implementation of this technique, discuss its statistical accuracy and show first results. New Results on Multiphoton Free-Free Transitions

Recently some of the present authors have reported on calculations concerning free-free transitions in the presence of very strong laser fields,1 in which a number of peculiar features were clearly displayed (among others, well pronounced maxima in the total cross sections and an oscillatory structure). In particular, those calculations concerned total cross sections of direct and inverse multiphoton bremsstrahlung, for several numbers of exchanged photons as functions of the field intensity. Figs. 1 and 2 show a sample of the typical results reported in Ref. 1.
Precision measurement of the K S meson lifetime with the KLOE detector

Using a large sample of pure, slow, short lived K0 mesons collected with KLOE detector at DaFne, we have measured the KS lifetime. From a fit to the proper time distribution we find tau = (89.562 +- 0.029_stat +- 0.043_syst) ps. This is the most precise measurement today in good agreement with the world average derived from previous measurements. We observe no dependence of the lifetime on the direction of the Ks.
The Performance of Belle II High Level Trigger in the First Physics Run

The Belle II experiment is a new generation B-factory experiment at KEK in Japan aiming at the search for New Physics in a huge sample of B-meson decays. The commissioning of the accelerator and the detector for the first physics run has started from March this year. The Belle II High Level Trigger (HLT) is fully working in the beam run. The HLT is now operated with 1600 cores clusterized in 5 units, which is 1/4 of the full configuration. The software trigger is performed using the same offline reconstruction code, and events are classified into a set of physics categories. Absolute kinematics of radio source components in the complete S5 polar cap sample I. First and second epoch maps at 8.4 GHz

We observed the thirteen extragalactic radio sources of the S5 polar cap sample at 8.4 GHz with the Very Long Baseline Array, on 1997.93 and 1999.41. We present the maps from those two epochs and briefly discuss the morphological changes experimented by some of the radio sources in the 1.4 yr elapsed. These results correspond to the first two epochs at 8.4 GHz of a program directed to study the absolute kinematics of the radio source components of the members of the sample by means of phase delay astrometry at 8.4, 15 and 43 GHz.
ACTINIDE AND ULTRA-HEAVY ABUNDANCES IN THE LOCAL GALACTIC COSMIC RAYS: AN ANALYSIS OF THE RESULTS FROM THELDEFULTRA-HEAVY COSMIC-RAY EXPERIMENT

The LDEF Ultra-Heavy Cosmic-Ray Experiment (UHCRE) detected Galactic cosmic rays (GCRs) of charge Z ≥ 70 in Earth orbit with an exposure factor of 170 m2 sr yr, much larger than any other experiment. The major results include the first statistically significant uniform sample of GCR actinides with 35 events passing quality cuts, evidence for the existence of transuranic nuclei in the GCR with one 96Cm candidate event, and a low 82Pb/78Pt ratio consistent with other experiments. The probability of the existence of a transuranic component is estimated as 96%, while the most likely 92U/90Th ratio is found to be 0.4 within a wide 70% confidence interval ranging from 0 to 0.96. Pattern projection for subpixel resolved imaging in microscopy.

In this paper, we present a new approach providing super resolved images exceeding the geometrical limitation given by the detector pixel size of the imaging camera. The concept involves the projection of periodic patterns on top of the sample, which are then investigated under a microscope. Combining spatial scanning together with proper digital post-processing algorithm yields the improved geometrical resolution enhancement. This new method is especially interesting for microscopic imaging when the resolution of the detector is lower than the resolution due to diffraction.
A new sample of large angular size radio galaxies II. The optical data

We constructed and presented in the first paper of this series a new sample of 84 large angular size radio galaxies by selecting from the NRAO VLA Sky Survey objects with angular size > 4', declination above +60 degrees and total flux density at 1.4 GHz > 100 mJy. In this paper we present optical spectra and images of those galaxies associated with the radio emission for which no redshift was known prior to our observations. Optical counterparts have been identified for all (but one) members of the sample. After our observations, a reliable spectroscopic redshift is available for 67 objects (80%) from the sample.
