A hero on the sidelines : the role of a morally ambivalent supporting character in young adult fantasy series
2017
Tässä maisterintutkielmassa tutkin moraalisesti ambivalenttia sankaria nuorten fantasialle ominaisena sivuhenkilötyyppinä. Tutkimuskohteena on kolme nuorille aikuisille suunnattua, modernin fantasian lajiin kuuluvaa kirjasarjaa: Christopher Paolinin Perillinen (2003-2011), Cassandra Claren Varjojen kaupungit (2007-2014) ja Rick Riordanin Olympoksen sankarit (2010-2014). Jokaisesta sarjasta tutkittavaksi on nostettu yksi moraalisesti ambivalenttia henkilöhahmotyyppiä edustava sivuhenkilö. Tutkimuskysymykseni ovat: Miten moraalisesti ambivalentteja sankareita kuvataan nuorten fantasiassa? Mitä funktioita heillä on sivuhenkilöinä ja miten he suhteutuvat keskeisempiin henkilöihin ja tarinan kaa…
Nāves motīvs Aleksandra Čaka prozā līdz Otrajam pasaules karam
2021
Bakalaura darbā “Nāves motīvs Aleksandra Čaka prozā līdz Otrajam pasaules karam” analizēti visi līdz Otrajam pasaules karam publicētie A. Čaka stāsti, kuros minēts nāves motīvs. Stāsti analizēti mākslinieciskajā laiktelpā un 20. gs. 20. un 30. gadu latviešu īsās prozas attīstības kontekstā. Darbā pētīta nāves nozīme stāstu mākslinieciskajā pasaulē un prozas varoņa atainojumā. A. Čaks pieder modernajai 30. gadu literātu paaudzei, kuru īsprozas centrā ir vientuļš, atsvešināts un dažādu psiholoģisku problēmu nomākts indivīds. Darbā secināts, ka A. Čaka stāstu varonis jūtas pasaulē ierobežots. Nāve stāstu varonim nozīmē izeju no viņa ierobežotā esības stāvokļa, iespēju izbēgt no dzīves grūtībām.
Promotion of school engagement through dialogic teaching practices in the context of a teacher professional development programme
2021
This study was conducted in the context of a teacher professional development programme that aimed to improve dialogic teaching in the classroom, and it describes the programme and examines the change in teachers' dialogic teaching practices and pupils' classroom engagement during the programme. Data on pupils' school engagement were collected using classroom video recordings and students' self-ratings at the end of the lesson including dialogic teaching practices. The participants comprised seven in-service teachers and their 140 pupils (10- to 15-year-olds) from two comprehensive schools. The findings indicated positive change in the use of dialogic teaching practices and in observed pupi…
THE EMERGENCE OF OPEN SCHOOL EDUCATION: THE CASE OF OPEN DISCOVERY SPACE PORTAL
2014
Nowadays, open schooling is considered an education paradigm with increasing popularity, which focuses on the learners and offers more freedom in education outside of the physical and other types of barriers such as accessibility, flexibility, affordability and availability of teacher/tutors, classrooms, schools and educational institutions. The main elements that define Open Schooling are flexible learning, based on fully exploring the potential of ICT to improve education and training systems quality and efficiency, aligning them with the current trends on ICT in education, distant learning and life-long training. The aim of this paper is to present the current status of Open Schooling ma…
Development Speeded up by Necessity : The Future of Higher Education and Academic Work Online
2021
The COVID-19 pandemic had a dramatic impact on our lives and living. In higher education, it led to a swift shift from on-campus to online education resulting in practices of emergency remote teaching through virtual classrooms. In this project, we seek to gain a deeper understanding of the challenges and opportunities that this abrupt, enforced change to online education entailed for faculty and students in Sweden and Finland. We aim to examine the evolution of online work and study practices, their impact on the teaching and learning environment, and new expectations imposed on the faculty and students. Our goal is to enhance the theoretical understanding of e-learning, developing guideli…
First observations of oophagy in a wild population of the sand boa (Eryx jaculus)
2017
The sand boa Eryx jaculus (Linnaeus, 1758) is found in the southern Balkans, Middle East and North Africa (Sindaco et al., 2013). Only recently The presence of this species has been confirmed in Italy, in a small area of southern Sicily (Insacco et al., 2015). Knowledge of the sand boa in Sicily is limited with few data on geographical distribution, morphology, and habitat (Insacco et al., 2015; Faraone et al., 2017). Even at a global scale the biology of this species is little known due to its secretive habits (Tokar & Obst, 1993).
Temporal Differences in Participation Modes in Video-Based Blended Learning Practice
2014
In traditionally organized education, the education provider also determines the teaching schedules. Education in accordance with the blended model and based on videos can be realized, when so wished, in such a way that the student will be free to decide about his/her time use. In this kind of environment students can still study in accordance with the proposed pedagogical model at a pace determined by lecture sessions so that the previous lecture is always seen before the next face-toface teaching session. Study can also completely adapted to one's own pace. In this case, the student watches the lecture videos before an exam, not worrying about the pace of face-to-face teaching. This resea…
Developing an evaluation framework for identifying globally shared and locally specific requirements for the design and use of educational technology
2015
This paper presents a preliminary evaluation framework for identifying globally shared and locally specific requirements for the design and use of educational technology. The framework was developed initially from a literature review, and subsequently further refined in international collaboration between Chile, Finland, Singapore, South Korea, Spain, and the United Arab Emirates. It consists of three partially overlapping parts: I) Education, teaching and learning; II) Culture and society; and III) Design and use of technological learning solutions. In addition to providing an evaluation tool for designers and researchers, the framework can support educators’ and student teachers’ cultural…
Associations of Classroom Design and Classroom-Based Physical Activity with Behavioral and Emotional Engagement among Primary School Students
2021
Educational reforms worldwide have resulted in schools increasingly incorporating open and flexible classroom designs. Open learning spaces may contribute to a student’s behavioral and emotional school engagement directly and by facilitating classroom-based physical activity (CPA). We investigated the associations between accelerometer-assessed CPA and student ratings of task-focused behavior and attitude towards school as indicators for behavioral and emotional engagement, respectively, with the associations of gender, grade, and classroom design on CPA among 206 3rd and 5th grade students in open learning spaces and conventional classrooms. Structural equation modelling showed open classr…
The connection between forms of guidance for inquiry-based learning and the communicative approaches applied : a case study in the context of pre-ser…
2019
Recent research has argued that inquiry-based science learning should be guided by providing the learners with support. The research on guidance for inquiry-based learning has concentrated on how providing guidance affects learning through inquiry. How guidance for inquiry-based learning could promote learning about inquiry (e.g. epistemic practices) is in need of exploration. A dialogic approach to classroom communication and pedagogical link-making offers possibilities for learners to acquire these practices. The focus of this paper is to analyse the role of different forms of guidance for inquiry-based learning on building the communicative approach applied in classrooms. The data for th…
