Factors explaining the learning of generic skills : a study of university students’ experiences

Although generic skills have received widespread attention from both policymakers and educationalists, little is known regarding how students acquire these skills, or how they should best be taught. Hence, the aim of this study was to identify what kinds of pedagogical practices are behind the learning of eight particular generic skills. The data were collected from university students (N = 163, n = 123) via Internet questionnaires. In this paper, we bring together notions of inclusive quality education, pedagogy, learning and teachers, and illustrate how the principle(s) of inclusion(s) has been enacted and translated into classroom practices in Finnish context. The change towards the information society implies that many countries have to change their curricula, because students need to develop competencies that are not addressed in the traditional curricula. A case study approach was applied to examine curriculum changes in ICT-supported pedagogical practices from 28 countries. This qualitative study explores the problem-solving culture associated with students' challenging behavior in an upper comprehensive school (ages 13 to 16). Based on the findings, new possibilities are suggested for developing the problem- solving culture in the Comprehensive School. The novel coronavirus pandemic forced schools to implement remote instruction during spring 2020. I studied teachers’ perceptions of the implementation of newcomer and Finnish as a second language instruction during the remote period. Survey respondents considered remote instruction a burden on both students and teachers and thought students’ unfamiliarity with educational technology presented challenges. Benefits of remote instruction included students’ increased self-directedness in learning, the use of technologies for differentiation, and an increase in collaboration with colleagues and families. nonPeerReviewed
