Overcoming the oblivion of technology in physics education

2008

Technology is generally viewed as ‘applied science’, that is to say, as something that comes ‘after’ science. This conception justifies the lack of attention paid to technology in science education, especially where physics education is concerned. In this chapter we question this simplistic view of the science-technology relationship, historically rooted in the unequal appreciation of intellectual and manual work, and we try to show how the absence of the technological dimension in science education contributes to a naïve and distorted view of science which deeply affects the necessary scientific and technological literacy of all citizens, as well as the preparation of the future scientists…

Implementing citizen science programmes in the context of university gardens to promote pre-service teachers' scientific literacy: a study case on so…

2022

This work presents an assessment of pre-service teachers’ argumentative practice, after implementing a novel teaching-learning sequence on soil health including a citizen science programme, which was applied outdoors at the university garden. The sequence was implemented at five Spanish universities with 351 undergraduates studying Early Childhood and Primary Teacher Education. It posed a final assessment task consisting in a real-world situation that involved making decisions on science-related issues: students needed to argue whether it was possible to use a piece of land as a school garden, based on soil data provided in a variety of formats. To assess participants’ level of achievement,…

Negotiating a New Culture of Doing Learning? A Study of Interaction in a Web Learning Environment with Special Focus on Teacher Approaches

2002

The article examines aspects of interaction, learning and teacher approach in an international, web-supported learning project, which was organised between three universities as part of their programmes in teacher education. The study focuses on interpretative resources which may contribute to how students perceive teacher interventions and presence in web-based learning activity. The roles and actions of teachers and students in a web-learning environment are not merely interpreted on the basis of intentional verbalised moves. The negotiation of the presence and role of participants is also guided by a variety of visual and linguistic cues on the web as well as the discourses around the le…

Using Rationale to Assist Student Cognitive and Intellectual Development

2010

One of the questions posed at the National Science Foundation (NSF)-sponsored workshop on Creativity and Rationale in Software Design was on the role of rationale in supporting idea generation in the classroom. College students often struggle with problems where more than one possible solution exists. Part of the difficulty lies in the need for students to progress through different levels of development cognitively and intellectually before they can tackle creative problem solving. Argumentation-based rationale provides a natural mechanism for representing problems, candidate solutions, criteria, and arguments relating those criteria to the candidate solutions. Explicitly expressing ration…

Learning Outcomes of an International Program in Cuba that Offers Undergraduates Opportunities in Authentic Research in Environmental Policy

2018

Short-term study abroad experiences are the most common type of undergraduate study abroad programs in the United States. Despite their prevalence, very few pedagogical frameworks exist that assist faculty in developing and implementing such educational programs. Moreover, and to the best of our knowledge, little empirical research exists on students’ learning outcomes following their participation in a short-term study abroad experience with an integrated, authentic research praxis. To address these potential gaps in the literature, two pedagogical frameworks were used to structure an international embedded program in Cuba which allowed students to engage in authentic research experiences …
