The role of emotions and literature in public deliberation: the figure of Martha C. Nussbaum ‘s perceptive equilibrium

This article argues that literature can play a key role in the processes of ethical deliberation; therefore it can be regarded as an extremely useful tool to justify public decision-making. In order to support this thesis I examine Nussbaum’s proposal of perceptive equilibrium as a method to conduct the public deliberation processes which integrates the emotions in its structure. Finally, I analyse one of the possible applications of the proposed method: introducing narrative texts, both historical and fictional, in the curricula as a method for ethical deliberation.

Aged or mature leachate, produced by old landfills, can be very refractory; for this reason mature leachate is difficult to treat alone, but it can be co-treated with sewage or domestic wastewater. The aim of the study was to investigate the feasibility of leachate co-treatment with synthetic wastewater, in terms of process performance and biomass activity, by means of respirometric techniques. Saona Island hosts the last hawksbill turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata) nesting population in the Dominican Republic, which has experienced a severe decline in the last decades, mostly due to illegal egg take. Here we present the results of an artificial incubation programme started in 2007 to protect the clutches from human predation. A preliminary survey in 2006 showed that about 60% of clutches laid were taken by humans. Over the study period (2007–2010) we recorded 400 clutches, of which 38.2% were predated by humans, 40.7% were artificially incubated and 21% were incubated in situ. A series of novel polymeric compounds of formula [M(btzb)3][ClO4]2 (Mll = Fe, Ni or Cu) with btzb = 1,4-bis-(tetrazol-1-yl)butane have been prepared and their physical properties investigated. The btzb ligand has been prepared and its crystal structure determined, together with a tentative crystal structure of the 3-D compound [Fe(btzb)3][ClO4]2. The model of the latter shows two symmetry-related, interpenetrating Fe-btzb networks in which the iron(II) ions approach each other as close as 8.3 and 9.1 A. Abstract Stone dust sample collected from a stone crushing industry situated at Muhammad Bazar in Birbhum, India, is studied for its physical characterization using various techniques. Morphology and compositional analysis of the stone dust by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) reveal that the dust is an agglomeration of many tiny particles (0.32–2.12 μm), mostly having sharp edges, as well show microstructure heterogeneity. Elements present in the sample are detected by energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDX). The population of anomalous spin states and aliovalent charge states of iron induced by the 57 Co(EC)57 Fe nuclear decay in polycristalline transition metal compounds was studied by means of Coincidence Mossbauer Emission Spectroscopy (CMES), that is Time-Differential Mossbauer Emission Spectroscopy (TDMES) as well as γ/Xray-Coincidence Mossbauer Emission Spectroscopy (γ/X-CMES). By use of time-integral Mossbauer emission spectroscopy (TIMES) we have observed anomalous high spin (S = 2) states of 57 Fe(II) in the system [57Co/Co(phen)3(ClO 4)2 with increasing intensities on lowering the temperature. A revision of the Convolvulus sabatius complex is presented and five taxa are now recognised. Convolvulus valentinus is re-circumscribed to comprise only blue-flowered individuals. Yellow-flowered plants previously referred to this species are transferred to C. supinus where they are recognised as a distinct variety: C. supinus var. melliflorus, comb nov. Variation in intensity of flower colour, pubescence and leaf shape among blue-flowered C. valentinus is highly variable within populations and in contrast to earlier treatments, no infraspecific taxa based on these traits are recognised.
