Performance Analyses of Innovative Glassblocks for BIPV
2014
The paper illustrates the results of the performance analyses conducted on an innovative glassblock integrated with 3rd generation dye-sensitized solar cells, designed for enabling the construction of translucent and sustainable building envelopes. The analyses encompass the simulation of both thermal and optical performance referring to different configurations of the PV-integrated glassblock, showing the results obtained by using two different software tools: Comsol Multiphysics and WINDOW. The configurations may differ, for example, because of the position of the module inside the glassblock, the type of dye-sensitized solar module used (composition, transparency, design), and glassblock…

Applying the Anna Karenina principle for wild animal gut microbiota : temporal stability of the bank vole gut microbiota in a disturbed environment
2020
Gut microbiota play an important role in host health. Yet, the drivers and patterns of microbiota imbalance (dysbiosis) in wild animals remain largely unexplored. One hypothesised outcome of stress on animal microbiomes is a destabilised microbial community that is characterised by an increase in inter-individual differences compared with microbiomes of healthy animals, which are expected to be (i) temporally stable and (ii) relatively similar among individuals. This set of predictions for response of microbiomes to stressors is known as the Anna Karenina principle (AKP) for animal microbiomes. We examine the AKP in a wild mammal inhabiting disturbed environments by conducting a capture-mar…
From Dysbiosis to Neurodegenerative Diseases through Different Communication Pathways: An Overview
2023
The microbiome research field has rapidly evolved over the last few decades, becoming a major topic of scientific and public interest. The gut microbiota (GM) is the microbial population living in the gut. The GM has many functions, such as maintaining gut homeostasis and host health, providing defense against enteric pathogens, and involvement in immune system development. Several studies have shown that GM is implicated in dysbiosis and is presumed to contribute to neurodegeneration. This review focuses mainly on describing the connection between the intestinal microbiome alterations (dysbiosis) and the onset of neurodegenerative diseases to explore the mechanisms that link the GM to nerv…
Interdisciplinary building categorization - A method to support sustainable energy efficiency strategies in historic districts
2016
The balance of energy conservation and building conservation must be carefully considered when developing management policies for historic districts. One possible approach is using building stock modelling. However, as state of the art models do not normally encompass aspects or values related to cultural heritage significance, new interdisciplinary categorization methods are required to facilitate a sustainable management of the built heritage. This paper presents a categorization method that has been developed as part of the European research project EFFESUS. It shows the procedural categorization of two very different historic centers in Palermo (Italy) and Visby (Sweden) respectively, a…

Changes in the roles of husband and wife
2017
The family creates the fundamental element of the social structure, subjected to changes and transformations. The family is both historically the oldest form of social life, occurring from the earliest stages of human history, regardless of its different varieties and cultural conditions, as well as the most common social group whose member was and usually is every man. The family has many functions in the life of a human and society, two of which are essential: procreation, which is an extension of the biological existence of society and socialization, meaning the transmission of socio-cultural world from generation to generation. In the context of the assumptions presented in this article…
Legionella pneumophila identifikācija, izmantojot MALDI-TOF MS un SBT metodes
2016
