Bayesian Analysis of a Future Beta Decay Experiment's Sensitivity to Neutrino Mass Scale and Ordering
2021
Bayesian modeling techniques enable sensitivity analyses that incorporate detailed expectations regarding future experiments. A model-based approach also allows one to evaluate inferences and predicted outcomes, by calibrating (or measuring) the consequences incurred when certain results are reported. We present procedures for calibrating predictions of an experiment's sensitivity to both continuous and discrete parameters. Using these procedures and a new Bayesian model of the $\beta$-decay spectrum, we assess a high-precision $\beta$-decay experiment's sensitivity to the neutrino mass scale and ordering, for one assumed design scenario. We find that such an experiment could measure the el…
Analytical representation of bimodality in bivariate distribution of chain length and chemical composition of copolymers
2022
Abstract Tuning the bimodality of microstructural features in polymers has provided novel properties and applications. A classic example is to overcome the trade-off between processability and mechanical properties in polyolefins. A recent example is to decrease the interfacial tension in blending incompatible polymers. Therefore, the development of a bimodality index (BI), especially for the chain length distribution (CLD) and the chemical composition distribution (CCD), is crucial for the quantitative design of materials. This study introduces quantitative expressions for the bimodality of univariate CLD on the linear scale, and CCD. Moreover, we develop a bimodality criterion for bivaria…
P-491 - Sensitivity to changes during antidepressant treatment: a comparison of unidimensional depression rating scales in patients with minor depres…
2012
In the efficacy evaluation of antidepressant treatments the total score of the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAMD) is still regarded as the’gold standard’. Studies suggest that unidimensional subscales of the HAMD, which capture the core depressive symptoms, outperform the full HAMD regarding the detection of antidepressant treatment effects. The present study compared several unidimensional subscales of the HAMD and the Inventory of Depressive Symptomatology (IDS) regarding their sensitivity to changes in depression symptoms in a sample of patients with minor depression (MIND). Biweekly IDS-C28 and HAMD17 data from 287 patients of a 10-week randomised, placebo-controlled trial comparin…
Involving the elderly in the content development of a health enhancing tablet-based service
2014
The aim of the present study was to specify the needs of elderly for a health-enhancing tablet-based service. An interview study was performed with voluntary elderly (N=19, female 15, male 4, aged 76.2 years (SD 8.3)). The attitudes towards improving health behaviours and technology utilisation were explored. The content illustrations were developed for the interviews, and evaluated by participants using a numerical scale (1 very poor − 5 very good) and verbal feedback. Content analysis was used in the analysis of qualitative data. Taking care of one's own well-being comprehensively was the most important incentive to maintain one's activity. Content illustrations were evaluated as high (av…
Recommendations of a Laboratory Infrastructure for Simulation of Telemedicine Services
2018
In Norway, a health reform targeting coordination and continuity of care has urged municipalities to re-organize their services as there is an increasing use of remote monitoring and sensor technologies in citizens’ homes. In this context, the research project “Telemedicine Agder” is an opportunity to study the implementation, organization and operation of large scale telemedicine services, and identify the service models of the future. As part of the project, simulation of a telemedicine service for remote monitoring of diabetes II was tested in a clinical laboratory with key informants from municipalities, hospital and research partners. This paper presents the technical and physical infr…
The Assessment of Perceived Service Quality of Public Health Care Services in Romania Using the SERVQUAL Scale
2013
Abstract The objective of this paper is to explore the application of the original SERVQUAL scale in the context of public health care services in Romania. More specifically, we implemented the SERVQUAL scale in order to uncover whether it fits as the original version or adjustments should be done and to define the demographic profiles of health care consumers who use public services in Romania. We have selected our sample respondents from a list of a gynaecological health care forum members, namely women from Bucharest who should have posted messages on the chosen forum no more than three months before the study was conducted and the messages should have comprised their experiences with ce…
Extraction of Endmembers from Spectral Mixtures
1999
Abstract Linear spectral mixture modeling (LSMM) divides each ground resolution element into its constituent materials using endmembers which represent the spectral characteristics of the cover types. However, it is difficult to identify and estimate the spectral signature of pure components or endmembers which form the scene, since they vary with the scale and purpose of the study. We propose three different methods to estimate the spectra of pure components from a set of unknown mixture spectra. Two of the methods consist in different optimization procedures based on objective functions defined from the coordinate axes of the dominant factors. The third one consists in the design of a neu…
Environmental and Forest Planning in Italy: Conflicts and Opportunities
2016
Abstract The necessity of a more sustainable use of lands and environmental resources in general, throughout specific programming and management tools at different scale levels is nowadays widely shared. Forests and woodlands are a key asset of the environment and the traditional and current landscapes. With regards to the state of art of forest planning and management tools in Italy, in this short paper, after a synthetic analysis of the tools currently adopted at different levels, some critical aspects of the relationships of forest planning instruments with other planning tools involved in environmental management (landscape plan, energy plans, basin plans) are investigated, enlightening…
Different key roles of mesoscale oceanographic structures and ocean bathymetry in shaping larval fish distribution pattern: A case study in Sicilian …
2016
Fish larvae data collected in year 2009 were used to examine the effects of particular environmental conditions on the structure of larvalassemblages in two oligotrophic Mediterranean areas (the Southern Tyrrhenian Sea and the Strait of Sicily). For this purpose, relationships with environmental variables (temperature, salinity and fluorescence), zooplankton biomass, water circulation and bathymetry are discussed. Hydrodynamic conditions resulted very differently between two study areas. The Southern Tyrrhenian Sea was characterized by moderate shallow circulation compared to the Strait of Sicily. In this framework, distribution pattern of larval density in the Tyrrhenian Sea was mainly dri…
