Method of Discrimination of Surface Fractality

Abstract A simple method for the discrimination of surface fractality is proposed. This method is based on the comparison of the nitrogen adsorption isotherm on a given sample with the "standard" isotherm on a smooth surface. The proposed comparative method makes it possible to determine the lower limit of the scale range of surface fractality. A thermodynamic method is recommended as a complement to fractal analysis in the scale range of about 10-1000 A. The results of the investigation of surface roughness are presented with examples of typical samples of silica gels, porous glasses, apatite, and coal.

A molecular dynamics study of large-scale reversible aggregation of anisotropic particles

We report findings of 1000 ps molecular dynamics simulations of a bidimensional system of 4050 Lennard–Jones particles with electric dipoles, undergoing spinodal separation. This simple system is used to model the reversible aggregation of building blocks bearing specific and fixed adhesion sites at their surface. Aggregation regions so obtained resemble images of self-assembled biological structures. Statistical analyses of these regions evidence the interplay of thermodynamic instability and of interaction range between the attachment sites. Comparison of laboratory-scale thermophilic biofilm and activated sludge processes integrated with a mesophilic activated sludge process

A combined thermophilic-mesophilic wastewater treatment was studied using a laboratory-scale thermophilic activated sludge process (ASP) followed by mesophilic ASP or a thermophilic suspended carrier biofilm process (SCBP) followed by mesophilic ASP, both systems treating diluted molasses (dilution factor 1:500 corresponding GF/A-filtered COD (COD(filt)) of 1900+/-190 mgl(-1)). With hydraulic retention times (HRTs) of 12-18 h the thermophilic ASP and thermophilic SCBP removed 60+/-13% and 62+/-7% of COD(filt), respectively, with HRT of 8 h the removals were 48+/-1% and 69+/-4%. Electronic structure trends of Möbius graphene nanoribbons from minimal-cell simulations

Investigating topological effects in materials requires often the modeling of material systems as a whole. Such modeling restricts system sizes, and makes it hard to extract systematic trends. Here, we investigate the effect of M\"obius topology in the electronic structures of armchair graphene nanoribbons. Using density-functional tight-binding method and minimum-cell simulations through revised periodic boundary conditions, we extract electronic trends merely by changing cells' symmetry operations and respective quantum number samplings. Quantum Simulations of One-Dimensional Nanostructures under Arbitrary Deformations

A powerful technique is introduced for simulating mechanical and electromechanical properties of one-dimensional nanostructures under arbitrary combinations of bending, twisting, and stretching. The technique is based on a novel control of periodic symmetry, which eliminates artifacts due to deformation constraints and quantum finite-size effects, and allows transparent electronic structure analysis. Europe’s offshore winds assessed from SAR, ASCAT and WRF

Abstract. Europe’s offshore wind resource mapping is part of the New European Wind Atlas (NEWA) international consortium effort. This study presents the results of analysis of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) ocean wind maps based on Envisat and Sentinel-1 with a brief description of the wind retrieval process and Advanced SCATterometer (ASCAT) ocean wind maps. The wind statistics at 10m and 100m height using an extrapolation procedure involving simulated long-term stability over oceans is presented for both SAR and ASCAT.
