Dissociation of emotional processes in response to visual and olfactory stimuli following frontotemporal damage.
2005
Contemporary neuropsychological studies have stressed the widely distributed and multicomponential nature of human affective processes. Here, we examined facial electromyographic (EMG) (zygomaticus and corrugator muscle activity), autonomic (skin conductance and heart rate) and subjective measures of affective valence and arousal in patient TG, a 30 year-old man with left anterior mediotemporal and left orbitofrontal lesions resulting from a traumatic brain injury. Both TG and a normal control group were exposed to hedonically valenced visual and olfactory stimuli. In contrast with control subjects, facial EMG and electrodermal activity in TG did not differentiate among pleasant, unpleasant…
A prospective randomized trial of high and standard dosages of recombinant factor VIIa for treatment of hemarthroses in hemophiliacs with inhibitors.
2006
Summary. Aim: A multicenter randomized open-label crossover prospective trial was designed to compare the efficacy, safety, and cost of standard and high dosages of recombinant factor VIIa (rFVIIa) for home treatment of hemarthroses in hemophiliacs with inhibitors. Methods: Patients were instructed to treat, within 6 h from the onset of bleeding, four consecutive hemarthroses of ankles, knees, or elbows, either with the rFVIIa standard dose of 90 μg kg−1 (repeated as necessary every 3 h) or with a single high dose of 270 μg kg−1. Patients who did not achieve a clinical success within 9 h continued rFVIIa treatment with repeated standard doses. Response to treatment was assessed for up to 48…
Therapeutic drug monitoring for optimizing amisulpride therapy in patients with schizophrenia.
2005
Amisulpride is a clinically effective antipsychotic drug in a broad dose range with low propensity for extrapyramidal symptoms (EPS). Daily doses and plasma levels of amisulpride were analyzed within a large-scale therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) survey to find plasma level ranges for optimized treatment under naturalistic conditions. Data of 378 schizophrenic patients treated with amisulpride (100-1550 mg) were included (40% female). Amisulpride plasma levels were analyzed at steady state; assessment comprised improvement (CGI-I) and side-effects, particularly EPS. For detection of cut-off values regarding non-response or EPS, receiver operating characteristics (ROC) curves were applied a…
Childhood methylphenidate treatment of ADHD and response to affective stimuli
2009
Neural correlates of emotional dysregulation in attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and persisting influence of Methylphenidate (MPH) still remain insufficiently understood. Decreased activation in the subgenual cingulate and the ventral striatum were found during the perception of positive and negative affective pictures in drug-naïve males with ADHD during childhood (n=10). Males with ADHD during childhood treated with MPH (n=10) did not show any significant differences compared to healthy controls (n=10). Further prospective studies need to clarify direct and indirect mechanisms of MPH treatment that may contribute to emotional processing, which is dysfunctional in males with…
Body-related attentional biases in patients with posttraumatic stress disorder resulting from childhood sexual abuse with and without co-occurring bo…
2015
Abstract Background and objectives Disturbed body perception is a common characteristic of patients with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) after childhood sexual abuse (CSA). We examined the extent to which biased information processing of body related stimuli was related to CSA. Methods Patients with PTSD after CSA (PTSD group; n = 61) were compared to healthy controls (HC group; n = 30). The PTSD group was subdivided into patients with comorbid Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD; PTSD+ group) and patients without BPD (PTSD-group). We used an emotional Stroop task (EST) with body-related words to assess biased information processing. Results Only patients in the PTSD+ group but not in…
Are primary-care physician practices related to health behaviors likely to reduce social inequalities in health?
2017
Abstract Our objective was to examine patients' health behaviors and the related practices of their primary-care physicians to determine whether physicians' actions might help to reduce the social inequalities in health behaviors among their patients. Fifty-two general practitioners, who were also medical school instructors in the Parisian area, volunteered to participate. A sample of 70 patients (stratified by sex) aged 40–70 years was randomly chosen from each physician's patient panel and asked to complete a questionnaire about their social position and health behaviors: tobacco and alcohol use, diet, physical activity, and participation in breast and cervical cancer screening. Each phys…
Mental distress following inpatient substance use treatment, modified by substance use; comparing voluntary and compulsory admissions
2017
Background Treatment services to patients with substance use disorders (SUDs), including those mandated to treatment, needs to be evaluated and evidence based. The Norwegian Municipal Health Care Act (NMHCA) calls for compulsory treatment for persons with “severe and life-threatening substance use disorder” if these individuals are not otherwise willing to be voluntarily treated and consequently risk their lives over drug use. Mental distress is known to be high among SUD patients admitted to inpatient treatment. The purpose of this study is to describe changes in mental distress from admission to a 6-month follow-up in patients with SUDs, which underwent either voluntary or compulsory trea…
Personality disorders among the relatives of schizophrenia patients.
1994
In light of current linkage studies in schizophrenia, research on the "schizophrenia spectrum" deserves increased attention for an exact determination of the affected phenotype: Those disorders that have a much higher prevalence among biological relatives of schizophrenia patients are supposed to share common etiological factors with "core" schizophrenia. However, there is controversy over which of the DSM-III-R personality disorders should be included in the spectrum. In a controlled family study of inpatients with a DSM-III-R diagnosis of schizophrenia (n = 101), schizophreniform and schizoaffective disorders (n = 69), and unipolar major depression (n = 160), familial rates of personality…
An evaluation score of the difficulty of thyroidectomy considering operating time and preservation of recurrent laryngeal nerve.
2018
The purpose of this study was to edit a renovated thyroidectomy difficulty scale (rTDS) in order to identify underlying thyroid diseases with a longer operative time and higher technical difficulty, also considering preservation of recurrent laryngeal nerve. We developed a renovated scale with a maximum score of 20 points by creating a form in which five variables were considered: vascularity, friability, mobility/fibrosis, gland size and difficulty in preservation of the recurrent laryngeal nerve. Two surgeons separately evaluated each of these. Through a simple linear regression analysis, we have analyzed the relationship between rTDS score and operative times, and between rTDS score and …
Importance of Social- and Health-Related Problems: Do Spaniards Give Them the Significance They Actually Deserve?
2019
Social and health problems imply an impact on society. The main objective of this study is to provide an overview of how Spanish people perceive cancer, terrorism, cardiovascular diseases, crime, AIDS, drugs, and traffic accidents, finding out whether they assess the importance of these issues in correspondence with their actual severity. The study used a full sample of 1206 Spaniards (51.6% females and 48.4% males) who responded to a computer-assisted telephone interviewing (CATI) survey on the significance of these social and health-related problems, assessed through a zero to ten Likert scale. The perceived severity of the problems was considered taking into account the official data of …
