Logo detection in images using HOG and SIFT
2017
In this paper we present a study of logo detection in images from a media agency. We compare two most widely used methods — HOG and SIFT on a challenging dataset of images arising from a printed press and news portals. Despite common opinion that SIFT method is superior, our results show that HOG method performs significantly better on our dataset. We augment the HOG method with image resizing and rotation to improve its performance even more. We found out that by using such approach it is possible to obtain good results with increased recall and reasonably decreased precision.
ConvLSTM Neural Networks for seismic event prediction in Chile
2021
Predicting seismic risk is a challenging task in order to avoid catastrophic effects. In this work, two models based on Convolutional Network (CNN) and Long Short Term Memory (LSTM) networks are proposed to predict the seismic risk in Chile. In particular, a ConvLSTM and a Multi-column ConvLSTM network are used for the prediction of the average number of seismic events greater than 2,8 magnitude on the Richter scale, in the Chilean regions of Coquimbo and Araucania between the years 2010 and 2017. For this model, the values of the intensity function estimated through an ETAS model and the accumulated displacement prior to a the seismic events are used as inputs. In particular, given the spa…

A facile microsynthesis of 14C-labelled picene
1984
Microscale Wittig olefination of commercially available [7-14C]-benzal dehyde of high specific radioactivity with aryl bromomethyl phosphonium salt and subsequent oxidative photocyclisation affords pure 14C-labelled picene in efficient yield.
Solid-State Fermentations of the Genus Aspergillus
1994
For the majority of filamentous fungal species, solid-state media are the natural life media. Growth can occur on the surface or within the whole substrate, depending on the porosity. Industrial solid-state fermentations have been developed largely in traditional food industries such as cheese, Oriental fermentations, fermented vegetables, meat, and other products, and in modern biotechnological industries such as antibiotics and enzymes. At the industrial scale, the latter fermentations allow for a decrease in the drying costs of the final products.
Astrochronology of the Valanginian-Hauterivian stages (Early Cretaceous): chronological relationships between the Paraná-Etendeka large igneous provi…
2015
16 pages; International audience; The Geological Time Scale shows large uncertainties on durations and ages of Berriasian to Albian stages (Early Cretaceous), which impact climate and paleoceanographic reconstructions. Here, we provide a new astrochronology of the Hauterivian Stage anchored on (1) recent biostratigraphically well-constrained published radio-isotopic dates, and (2) a previously published astrochronology of the Valanginian Stage. A new duration of the Hauterivian Stage is assessed here at 5.93 ± 0.41 myr. The retained age model, anchored on a latest CA-ID-TIMS U–Pb age from a tuff level in the Hauterivian of the Neuquén Basin (Argentina), dates the base of the Valanginian Sta…
Tethyan magnetostratigraphy from Pizzo Mondello (Sicily) and correlation to the Late Triassic Newark astrochronological polarity time scale
2004
We present the magnetostratigraphy and stable isotope stratigraphy from an expanded (~430-m-thick) Upper Triassic marine limestone section at Pizzo Mondello, Sicily, and review published biostratigraphic information that can be used to defi ne the location of the conodont Carnian-Norian and Norian- Rhaetian boundaries in this section. Pizzo Mondello offers good potential for magnetostratigraphic correlation of marine biostratigraphic and chemostratigraphic data with the continental Newark astrochronological polarity time scale (APTS) for development of an integrated Late Triassic time scale. The relatively stable average values of 18O centered on 0‰ are a strong indication that the Cherty …

The clustering of galaxies in the SDSS-III Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey: Baryon Acoustic Oscillations in the Data Release 10 and 11 galaxy…
2014
We present a one per cent measurement of the cosmic distance scale from the detections of the baryon acoustic oscillations in the clustering of galaxies from the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS), which is part of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey III (SDSS-III). Our results come from the Data Release 11 (DR11) sample, containing nearly one million galaxies and covering approximately $8\,500$ square degrees and the redshift range $0.2<z<0.7$. We also compare these results with those from the publicly released DR9 and DR10 samples. Assuming a concordance $\Lambda$CDM cosmological model, the DR11 sample covers a volume of 13\,Gpc${}^3$ and is the largest region of the Universe ever su…
A Standard Siren Measurement of the Hubble Constant from GW170817 without the Electromagnetic Counterpart
2019
We perform a statistical standard siren analysis of GW170817. Our analysis does not utilize knowledge of NGC 4993 as the unique host galaxy of the optical counterpart to GW170817. Instead, we consider each galaxy within the GW170817 localization region as a potential host; combining the redshift from each galaxy with the distance estimate from GW170817 provides an estimate of the Hubble constant, $H_0$. We then combine the $H_0$ values from all the galaxies to provide a final measurement of $H_0$. We explore the dependence of our results on the thresholds by which galaxies are included in our sample, as well as the impact of weighting the galaxies by stellar mass and star-formation rate. Co…
