Differential Responses of Nitrate Reducer Community Size, Structure, and Activity to Tillage Systems

2009

ABSTRACT The main objective of this study was to determine how the size, structure, and activity of the nitrate reducer community were affected by adoption of a conservative tillage system as an alternative to conventional tillage. The experimental field, established in Madagascar in 1991, consists of plots subjected to conventional tillage or direct-seeding mulch-based cropping systems (DM), both amended with three different fertilization regimes. Comparisons of size, structure, and activity of the nitrate reducer community in samples collected from the top layer in 2005 and 2006 revealed that all characteristics of this functional community were affected by the tillage system, with increa…

A complex thrust sequence in western Himalaya: the active Medlicott Wadia Thrust.

2017

15 pages; International audience; The recent activity of the Medlicott-Wadia Thrust (MWT) is investigated by geomorphic and tectonic studies in the Riasi zone, south of the Pir Panjal range (India, Jammu-Kasmir state of western Himalaya). In the Riasi area, the MWT forms a splay of five faults that dip northward. The recent activity of the splay is quantified using a set of deformed Quaternary alluvial units. The central branch of the thrust splay moved Precambrian limestones above Quaternary sediments and is sealed by 36 ± 3 ka (youngest OSL age) deposits. The other branches offset the top of a 15 ± 1 ka (youngest OSL age) alluvial fan by 180 to 120 m; the two southernmost branches form 17…

Food choice factors in developing countries: The case of Madagascar

2012

International audience; Madagascar, a developing country, suffers from seasonal poverty. Although some natural resources exist, malnutrition problems continue to affect a large proportion of the population especially in rural areas. The main purpose of the study was to evaluate the effect of geographical and economical environments on food choice determinants in Madagascar. Focus group discussions and questionnaire surveys were carried out to investigate the representations of the concepts of eating and nutrition in four areas in Madagascar: Antananarivo urban (AU) and rural (AR), in the centre part of Madagascar, and Antsiranana urban (DU) and rural (DR), in the northern coast. In all area…

Bilingual panels: a tool to evaluate the role of language in descriptive tasks

2013

Cross cultural studies relating sensory profiles established in different countries suggest that part of the observed cultural differences might be due to language. Indeed, participants in cross cultural studies often have different food experiences as well as different languages and so the effects of language and cultures cannot be easily separated. A way to separate these effects is to work with bilingual assessors. Madagascar is a good candidate to perform such a study as two languages coexist in this country: Malagasy and French. Four flash profiles were performed to evaluate six samples of Moringa oleifera leaf powders: two in French and two in Malagasy. The descriptors generated by the…

Nouveau regard sur le Bronze ancien en Bourgogne à la lumière de l’étude d’une hache récemment découverte en forêt d’Étaules (21)

2014

In 2010, in doubtful circumstances, a bronze axe blade was fortuitously discovered in the forest of Étaules. The artefact has been studied as detailed as possible in order to suggest its former cultural context, thus allowing to give a brief review of the Early Bronze Age in Burgundy. This flanged axe, close to the Neyruz type, can be attributed to the mid-Early Bronze Age. In an excellent state of preservation, it was carefully prepared after having been cast in a split mould; although worn by use, it remains fully functional. Despite the lack of the archaeological context at the precise place where it was discovered, its presence strengthens the idea of a developed human occupation in Bur…
