Sperm DNA fragmentation: An early and reliable marker of air pollution.
2017
Environmental factors could have a key role in the continuous and remarkable decline of sperm quality observed in the last decades. This study compared the seminal parameters and sperm DFI in men living in areas with different levels of air pollution. Results demonstrate that both steel plants workers and patients living in a high polluted area show a mean percentage of sperm DNA fragmentation above 30%, highlighting a clear sperm damage. In this work, two different techniques were used to measure sperm DNA damage in patientsâ groups, finding in both cases a high sperm DFI in patients living in polluted areas. We candidate sperm DNA fragmentation as a valuable early marker of the presence…
A 4K-Input High-Speed Winner-Take-All (WTA) Circuit with Single-Winner Selection for Change-Driven Vision Sensors
2019
Winner-Take-All (WTA) circuits play an important role in applications where a single element must be selected according to its relevance. They have been successfully applied in neural networks and vision sensors. These applications usually require a large number of inputs for the WTA circuit, especially for vision applications where thousands to millions of pixels may compete to be selected. WTA circuits usually exhibit poor response-time scaling with the number of competitors, and most of the current WTA implementations are designed to work with less than 100 inputs. Another problem related to the large number of inputs is the difficulty to select just one winner, since many competitors ma…
Uzturs ar samazinātu ogļhidrātu saturu (SCD/GAPS) autiskā spektra simptomu mazināšanai bērniem- pilotpētījums
2019
To…
Risk of classical Kaposi sarcoma by plasma levels of Epstein-Barr virus antibodies, sCD26, sCD23 and sCD30
2010
Abstract Background To clarify the immunological alterations leading to classical Kaposi sarcoma (cKS) among people infected with KS-associated herpesvirus (KSHV). Methods In a population-based study of 119 cKS cases, 105 KSHV-seropositive controls, and 155 KSHV-seronegative controls, we quantified plasma soluble cluster of differentiation (sCD) levels and antibodies against Epstein-Barr virus nuclear antigen-1 (anti-EBNA-1) and viral capsid antigen (anti-VCA). Differences between groups in prevalence of low-tertile anti-EBNA-1 and high-tertile anti-VCA were compared by logistic regression. Continuous levels between groups and by presence of cKS co-factors among controls were compared by li…
Effects of short-term methionine and cysteine restriction and enrichment with polyunsaturated fatty acids on oral glucose tolerance, plasma amino aci…
2021
Abstract Objective In this 7-day pilot study we randomized healthy, normal-weight men and women to either a dietary intervention with methionine and cysteine restriction enriched in PUFA (Met/Cyslow + PUFA, n = 7) or with high contents of methionine, cysteine and SFA (Met/Cyshigh + SFA, n = 7). The objective was to describe the short-term responses in oral glucose tolerance, amino acid profile, total fatty acid profile, pyruvate and lactate following a Met/Cyslow + PUFA diet vs. Met/Cyshigh + SFA. Results The diet groups consisted of five women and two men, aged 20–38 years. After the 7-d intervention median pre- and post-oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) glucose concentrations were 5 mmol…
Energetic aspects of intramolecular coupling between the nucleotide binding site and the distal switch II region of the yeast RAS2 protein
1994
AbstractWe have studied the interaction of the yeast RAS2 protein with guanine nucleotides using energetic parameters for the dissociation of RAS·nucleotide complexes. The results indicated that a Gly → Ser substitution at position 82 led to an altered interaction with GppNHp and, to a lesser extent, also with GDP. It was also possible to conclude that structural perturbation of Gly82 can stimulate nucleotide release by decreasing the energetic barrier for nucleotide dissociation. This, together with the observation that residues 80 and 81 are involved in the response of RAS to nucleotide exchange factors without affecting GDP binding per se, suggests a potential mechanism for exchange fact…

Monounsaturated fatly acid metabolism and colon cancer cells proliferation : role of Stearoyl-CoA desaturase-1 and effect of conjugated linoleic acid…
2012
Cancer cells adapt their metabolism in response to signals from the microenvironment and proliferation. Thus, MonoUnsaturated Fatty Acid (MUFA) synthesis is increased in colon cancer cells, and associated with increased Stearoyl-CoA Desaturase (SCD) activity, the rate limiting enzyme of MUFA biosynthesis. Polyunsaturated Fatty Acid (PUFA), as isomers of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), exert inhibitor activity on SCD-1 and have anti-cancer properties, but their mechanisms are not yet clear. In this context, the aim of this work was first to evaluate the role of SCD-1 in the proliferation of colon cancer cells (CCC) and to define the underlying mechanisms. In a second time, we provide new inf…
SCD5-induced oleic acid production reduces melanoma malignancy by intracellular retention of SPARC and cathepsin B
2014
A proper balance between saturated and unsaturated fatty acids (FAs) is required for maintaining cell homeostasis. The increased demand of FAs to assemble the plasma membranes of continuously dividing cancer cells might unbalance this ratio and critically affect tumour outgrowth. We unveiled the role of the stearoyl-CoA desaturase SCD5 in converting saturated FAs into mono-unsaturated FAs during melanoma progression. SCD5 is down-regulated in advanced melanoma and its restored expression significantly reduced melanoma malignancy, both in vitro and in vivo, through a mechanism governing the secretion of extracellular matrix proteins, such as secreted protein acidic and rich in cysteine (SPAR…
