Multiple Scenario Analysis of Battery Energy Storage System Investment: Measuring Economic and Circular Viability

2022

Circular business models for batteries have been revealed in earlier research to achieve economic viability while reducing total resource consumption of raw materials. The objective of this study is to measure the economic performance of the preferred business model by creating different scenarios comparing second life (spent) and new battery investment for seven different European regions and four energy management strategies. Findings reveal levels of economic ability for a total of 34 scenarios simulated, including direct savings per kWh, a total change in energy costs per year, battery charge/discharge cycles, and comparative breakeven analyses. Regional effects are also measured based …

Life Cycle Assessment of Electricity Generation Scenarios in Italy

2018

Hindering global warming and achieving a more competitive, secure and sustainable energy sector are some of the most relevant goals of the 2030 Framework for climate and energy of the European Union. European countries have to identify and implement strategies for contributing to these ambitious goals. In this context, the authors carried out a scenario analysis on the Sicilian electricity mix in order to estimate the life cycle energy and environmental benefits of the increase of the use of renewable energy technologies for electricity production, and the potential contribution of Sicily in the achievement of the European energy and environmental targets. In detail, the authors identified …

A dynamic simulation approach to frame drivers and implications of corruption practices on firm performance

2014

Corruption is a multifaceted socio-economic phenomenon widely spread - although with different intensity - all around the world. Many studies on corruption have been conducted at a country-level, but relatively little effort has been placed in evaluating its implications, in terms of both financial and competitive performance, at a firm-level. Therefore, this paper aims at exploring the causal relationships underlying the effect of corruption on firm performance in order to show the different scenarios that may emerge from the combination between external (i.e., contextual conditions) and internal (i.e., organizational characteristics) forces that drive corruption. To this end, we adopt a D…

Towards sustainable mobility : Transformative scenarios for 2034

2022

Highlights • Increasing the share of walking and cycling is one of the building blocks of sustainable mobility transformation. • We organised an online Delphi survey for 30 walking and cycling experts during the first wave of COVID-19 pandemic. • Disaggregative Delphi analysis is elaborated based on the systemic restructuring of qualitative data. • Transport experts’ views of the future are described in the form of five walking and cycling scenarios up to 2034. • The results can be used for strategic transport planning and policy, and for identifying instruments for walking and cycling promotion in urban areas. Increasing the share of walking and cycling is one of the building blocks of sus…

UAV-Assisted Data Collection in Wireless Sensor Networks: A Comprehensive Survey

2021

Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are usually deployed to different areas of interest to sense phenomena, process sensed data, and take actions accordingly. The networks are integrated with many advanced technologies to be able to fulfill their tasks that is becoming more and more complicated. These networks tend to connect to multimedia networks and to process huge data over long distances. Due to the limited resources of static sensor nodes, WSNs need to cooperate with mobile robots such as unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs), or unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in their developments. The mobile devices show their maneuverability, computational and energy-storage abilities to support WSNs in mul…

Scenario modeling for the management of international bond portfolios

1998

We address the problem of portfolio management in the international bond markets. Interest rate risk in the local market, exchange rate volatility across markets, and decisions for hedging currency risk are integral parts of this problem. The paper develops a stochastic programming optimization model for integrating these decisions in a common framework. Monte Carlo simulation procedures, calibrated using historical observations of volatility and correlation data, generate jointly scenarios of interest and exchange rates. The decision maker's risk tolerance is incorporated through a utility function, and additional views on market outlook can also be incorporated in the form of user specifi…

A multidimensional model based on the Choquet integral to evaluate performance of waterfront redevelopment projects in promoting local growth

2012

The paper aim to construct a multi-criteria model assessing the suitability of waterfront development scenarios to contribute to local growth. The model applies to the city of Catania. It is built according to the strategic directions on territorial government recognized by European Community for Sicily. The evaluation model includes a set of strategic criteria for local social and economic sustainability. The aesthetic and functional regeneration of urban waterfront areas is a very complex issue because of the manifold social, environmental and economic implications. The choice among different alternatives of redevelopment of such a kind of areas should be addressed with typical techniques…

Unified Radio and Network Control Across Heterogeneous Hardware Platforms

2016

Experimentation is an important step in the investigation of techniques for handling spectrum scarcity or the development of new waveforms in future wireless networks. However, it is impractical and not cost effective to construct custom platforms for each future network scenario to be investigated. This problem is addressed by defining Unified Programming Interfaces that allow common access to several platforms for experimentation-based prototyping, research, and development purposes. The design of these interfaces is driven by a diverse set of scenarios that capture the functionality relevant to future network implementations while trying to keep them as generic as possible. Herein, the d…

Uncertainty Analysis in the Evaluation of the DDF Curves Parameters in Climate Change Scenarios

2016

Abstract On the global scale, there is a robust observational evidence that, over the last decades, the frequency and intensity of extreme events significantly changed, even if regional and local studies have highlighted complex and non-uniform spatial patterns. Climate change can cause increased rainfall intensities which leads to an additional impact on drainage systems, due to the alteration of magnitude and frequency of peak flows over their service life. For this reason, the design criteria of urban drainage infrastructures need to be revised and updated, in order to take into account the possible variations of extreme rainfall. In particular, the Depth-Duration-Frequency (DDF) curves,…
