Educational Practitioners on Professional Community and Sense of Community

Abstract The study aims to address two areas regarding preschool education: the participation of preschool practitioners in professional groups and communities and the views and understandings they hold on the ‘professional community’ concept. A survey was completed by teachers and specialists working with preschool children in all kindergartens of Sibiu (N=308) in July 2011. A quantitative and qualitative approach of the data was used, for processing a part of the survey’s items. Situación de la enseñanza de las ciencias por indagación en los planes de estudio de Grado de Maestro de Educación Primaria en España

En el presente trabajo se analizan 84 guías docentes de asignaturas de ciencias experimentales y/o su didáctica impartidas en el Grado en Maestro en Educación Primaria de universidades españolas. El análisis de la información contenida en ellas nos permite conocer la formación que proponen las guías docentes de asignaturas científicas de dicho grado y hasta qué punto la enseñanza de la ciencia por indagación está presente en su plan de formación. Using Internet videos to learn about controversies: Evaluation and integration of multiple and multimodal documents by primary school students

Abstract In many Internet videos authors appear in front of the camera to present their particular view on a topic. Given the high consumption rate of Internet videos by teenagers, we explored the pros and cons of using these videos to learn about complex topics, compared to learning from textual web pages. Specifically, we studied how 207 primary school students (grades 4–6) evaluated and integrated multiple and multimodal web pages (text or video) while learning about the pros and cons of bottled water. Engaging with mathematics in the kindergarten. Orchestrating a fairy tale through questioning and use of tools

ABSTRACTThe aim of this study is to analyse how a kindergarten teacher orchestrated a mathematical activity involving a fairy tale. Taking a sociocultural perspective on learning and development, naturally occurring talk-in-interaction has been analysed in order to scrutinise the subtleties of the orchestration. The fairy tale Goldilocks and the Three Bears was used both as context for the activity, but also as a means through which mathematical concepts were engaged with. The chapter characterizes citizenship education in Latvia within the national education system and on the level of public interest and involvement. The article particularly focuses on a large school education reform carried out in Latvia since 1991. The chapter concludes with recommendations for further research in the field of citizenship education in Latvia, as well as for policymakers.
