Untersuchungen zur Mehrfach-Emission von Sekundrelektronen

1964

CuBe- and NaCl-targets are bombarded by single electrons (100–600 eV). The secondary electrons accelerated by 40 kV strike the crystal of a scintillation counter, backed by a multichannel analyser. The probabilityP n of emission ofn=0, 1, 2, 3, ... secondaries can be found from the pulse height distribution. The probability distributionP n =f(n) shows a characteristic deviation from aPoisson's distribution. There was no evidence that there is a preference for even numbers ofn as found byBarrington andAnderson.

A high angular-resolution and time-of-flight detector system for recoil protons from the reactions p(γ, γ)p and p(γ, π0)p

1996

Using the Mainz NaI(Tl)BaF2 photon spectrometer CATS (Compton And Two photon Spectrometer) together with the prototype of a universal spectrometer for recoil protons TRAJAN (TRAjectory ANalyser) we have studied different methods to disentangle Compton scattering by the proton from the large π0 background through the energy range of the Δ resonance. CATS is a modular 48 cm ⊘ × 64 cm NaI(Tl) detector with an energy resolution of 1.5% combined with a 2π array of 61 BaF2 detectors. TRAJAN consists of a hodoscope with two planes, a wire chamber with horizontal and vertical wires and a grid of horizontal and vertical plastic scintillator strips, followed by a wall of nine NaI(Tl) detectors. By t…

PESIC: An Integrated Front-End for PET Applications

2007

An ASIC front-end has been developed for multi-anode photomultiplier based nuclear imaging devices. Its architecture has been designed to improve resolution and decrease pile-up probability in Positron Emission Tomography systems which employ continuous scintillator crystals. Analog computation elements are isolated from the photomultiplier by means of a current sensitive preamplifier stage. This allows digitally programmable adjustment of every anode gain, also providing better resolution in gamma event position calculation and a shorter front-end deadtime. The preamplifier stage also offers the possibility of using other types of photomultiplier devices such as SiPM. The ASIC architecture…

Performance study of the fast timing Cherenkov detector based on a microchannel plate PMT

2017

Prototype of the fast timing Cherenkov detector, applicable in high-energy collider experiments, has been developed basing on the modified Planacon XP85012 MCP-PMT and fused silica radiators. We present the reasons and description of the MCP-PMT modification, timing and amplitude characteristics of the prototype including the summary of the detector's response on particle hits at oblique angles and MCP-PMT performance at high illumination rates.

The backward end-cap for the PANDA electromagnetic calorimeter

2015

The PANDA experiment at the new FAIR facility will cover a broad experimental programme in hadron structure and spectroscopy. As a multipurpose detector, the PANDA spectrometer needs to ensure almost 4π coverage of the scattering solid angle, full and accurate multiple-particle event reconstruction and very good particle identification capabilities. The electromagnetic calorimeter (EMC) will be a key item for many of these aspects. Particle energies ranging from some MeVs to several GeVs have to be measured with a relative resolution of 1% ⊕ 2%/√E/GeV . It will be a homogeneous calorimeter made of PbWO4 crystals and will be operated at -25°C, in order to improve the scintillation light yiel…

Omnibus experiment: CPT and CP violation with sterile neutrinos

2016

We propose to probe both the CPT and CP violation together with the search for sterile neutrinos in one do-it-all experiment. This omnibus experiment would utilize neutrino oscillometry with large scintillator detectors like LENA, JUNO or RENO-50 and manmade radioactive sources similar to the ones used by the GALLEX experiment. Our calculations indicate that such an experiment is realistic and could be performed in parallel to the main research plan for JUNO, LENA, or RENO-50. Assuming as the starting point the values of the oscillation parameters indicated by the current global fit (in 3 active + 1 sterile scenario) and requiring at least 5 sigma confidence level, we estimate that with the…

Focal-plane detector system for the KATRIN experiment

2014

The focal-plane detector system for the KArlsruhe TRItium Neutrino (KATRIN) experiment consists of a multi-pixel silicon p-i-n-diode array, custom readout electronics, two superconducting solenoid magnets, an ultra high-vacuum system, a high-vacuum system, calibration and monitoring devices, a scintillating veto, and a custom data-acquisition system. It is designed to detect the low-energy electrons selected by the KATRIN main spectrometer. We describe the system and summarize its performance after its final installation.

The Crystal Barrel data acquisition system

1992

The main detector components of the Crystal Barrel (CBAR) experiment at the Low Energy Antiproton Ring (LEAR) at CERN are two proportional wire chambers, a jet drift chamber and an electromagnetic calorimeter composed of 1380 CsI(Tl) crystals, with a total of 4380 analog channels. A description is given of the use of distributed VME-based microcomputers to collect data from the various subdetectors and to merge the full event information in a global event builder. At this level the data are transferred to a mu VAX for tape storage and monitoring. >

Problems of electron detection in Depth-Selective Conversion Electron Mössbauer Spectroscopy

1992

Applications of Depth-Selective Conversion Electron Mossbauer Spectroscopy (DCEMS) are limited by the long measuring times needed for collecting sufficient data statistics. To shorten the recording time, the background should be reduced and the detection efficiency for conversion electrons should be improved. For57Co/57Fe DCEMS, systematic studies were performed to investigate the origin, shape, and structure of the background components in DCEMS data distributions for various samples using channeltrons and low-noise scintillation counters as electron detectors.

A trigger system for measurements of proton-induced rare hadronic reactions around Tp=400MeV

2008

Abstract We developed a trigger system for the measurement of proton-induced rare hadronic reactions around the beam kinetic energy T p = 400 MeV based on highly segmented trigger scintillation detectors and programmable logic modules. The trigger system was designed to enhance events with the negative-pion production by the difference of the curvatures of the particle tracks in a magnetic field. Since the production cross-section of the negative-pion by the proton-induced reactions was smaller by about 3 orders of magnitude than the total cross-section around the beam energy, we expected large reduction of the trigger rate by the negative-pion selection. The construction of the trigger sys…
