NanoESCA: imaging UPS and XPS with high energy resolution

Abstract A novel imaging electron spectrometer has been used for laterally resolved ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) in the soft X-ray range. The instrument is based on a high-resolution emission microscope optics using a cathode lens and an imaging dispersive analyser. The analyser is corrected for the leading aberration term ( α 2 -term) by means of two hemispherical analysers in antisymmetric configuration with an appropriate transfer lens. Small-area spectra as well as energy-filtered images have been taken in the soft X-ray range for a meteorite sample and in the range of the d-band of a Cu polycrystal. An energy resolution of 106 …

Fast elemental mapping and magnetic imaging with high lateral resolution using a novel photoemission microscope

Abstract Using tunable soft X-ray synchrotron radiation and a new-generation photoemission electron microscope with integral sample stage and microarea selector, elemental images and local XANES spectra have been measured. Given the present conditions (PM3 at BESSY), the lateral resolution was in the range of 130 nm with the potential of considerable improvement with high-brilliance sources (a base resolution of 25 nm was obtained in threshold photoemission). The luminescence of ZnO ceramics

Abstract The luminescence properties of ZnO ceramics with grains 100–5000 nm sintered by different techniques from nanopowders were studied. The luminescence decay times were compared with that obtained for ZnO single crystal. The temperature dependence of non-exponential decay of defect luminescence (2.0–2.6 eV) was measured in wide time, intensity and temperature range. The luminescence decay kinetic at T ≤ 20 K shows the decay close to I(t) ∼ t−1 dependence. At temperature region 50–250 K the decay kinetics is more complicate since the TSL was observed in this temperature region. The contribution of the Italian Northern Cross Radiotelescope to the Gamma-Ray Observatory Pulsar Timing Network

The observation of pulsars at gamma-ray energy requires updated pulsar parameters in order to fold the gamma-ray data over time intervals of weeks. The Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory Institute has set up an international agreement including several radiotelescopes and pulsar observers in order to provide a suitable timing support at radio wavelengths. In this paper we describe the system used at the Italian Northern Cross for the pulse timing observations related to the GRO mission.

Search for radio pulsations in four anomalous X-ray pulsars and discovery of two new pulsars

We have performed deep searches for radio pulsations from four southern anomalous X-ray pulsars (AXPs) to investigate their physical nature in comparison with the rotation powered pulsars. The data were acquired using the Parkes radio telescope with the 1.4 GHz multibeam receiver. No pulsed emission with periodicity matching the X-ray ephemeris have been found in the observed targets down to a limit of ∼0.1 mJy. A blind search has also been performed on all the 13 beams of the multibeam receiver (the central beam being pointed on the target AXP), leading to the serendipitous discovery of two new radio pulsars and to the further detection of 18 pulsars. Search for radio pulsations in four Anomalous X-ray Pulsars and discovery of two new pulsars

We report on observations of four southern Anomalous X-ray Pulsars, (1RXS J170849.0-400910, 1E 1048.1-5937, 1E 1841-045 and AX J1845-0258), obtained at 1.4 GHz using the Parkes radio telescope. Radio pulsations from these sources have been searched (i) by directly folding the time series at a number of trial periods centered on the value of the spin rate obtained from the X-ray observations; (ii) by performing a blind search; (iii) using a code sensitive to single dedispersed pulses, in the aim to detect signals similar to those of the recently discovered Rotating RAdio Transients. Ultrathin Organic Multilayer Films Via Salt Formation: Easy Access To Tailor-made Coatings In The Thickness Range Of 1 Nm To 500 Nm

The state of the art technologies for the preparation of well defined ultrathin films in the submicron range are the Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) technique and self-assembly (SA) methods based on chemisorption [l]. Whereas the LBtechnique requires sophisticated apparatus and is generally limited to small film areas [2], the SA-methods are relatively simple [3,4], hut have not been employed for the preparation of films thicker than 8 layers ( 20nm) [4], probably due to the loss of chemical functionality. Our approach avoids these limits and extends the SA-concept by emploing salt formation as the driving force for the construction of multilayer supramolecular assemblies.

Number, Mass and Volume Distributions of Mineral Aerosol and Soils of the Sahara

Abstract A direct method will be described to determine the complete mineral size distribution in aerosol (xylene-insoluble component) and soils (water-insoluble component) covering a size range from 0.01 up to 100 μm and 1000 μm radius, respectively, by using a combination of a scanning electron microscope, optical microscope and sieving. Aerosol and soil samples from the Sahara have been investigated. All mineral aerosol size distributions indicate a maximum between 0.06 and 0.08 μm radius and mineral particles have been found in the Aitken size range down to 0.02 μm radius.
