The role of lantern fish (Myctophidae) in the life-cycle of cetacean parasites from western Mediterranean waters

2015

Myctophids (lantern fish) and cephalopods play a key role in trophic webs from the continental slope and oceanic waters linking the zooplankton to top predators. Many cetaceans feed on both lantern fish and cephalopods, and such prey would thus be expected to bridge the trophic gap in the life-cycles of helminths infecting cetaceans. However, information on the life-cycles of most of these helminths is extremely scanty. We examined the parasite fauna of myctophids and cephalopods in two areas from the western Mediterranean where at least 21 helminth taxa from cetaceans have been reported and both cetacean diversity and abundance is high. A total of 1012 individuals of 8 lantern fish species…

Protection of living yeast cells by micro-organized shells of natural polyelectrolytes

2015

International audience; Saccharomyces cerevisiae, a eukaryotic model organism, plays a key role in the oxidative stability of fermented products. In order to protect cells against environmental stresses, we report a method of modifying the cell surface architecture while maintaining the internal working properties of the system. The objective was to encapsulate living yeast cells in micro-organized polyelectrolyte shells using layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly. For the first time, the natural polyelectrolytes, β-lactoglobulin and sodium alginate, were alternately deposited on the surface of S. cerevisiae. Transmission electron microscopy coupled with immune-cytochemistry and scanning electron m…

In vitro evaluation of efficacy of different rotary instrument systems for gutta percha removal during root canal retreatment

2016

Background: Complete removal of old filling material during root canal retreatment is fundamental for predictable cleaning and shaping of canal anatomy. Most of the retreatment methods tested in earlier studies have shown inability to achieve complete removal of root canal filling. Therefore the aim of this investigation was to assess the efficacy of three different rotary nickel titanium retreatment systems and Hedstrom files in removing filling material from root canals. Material and Methods: Sixty extracted mandibular premolars were decoronated to leave 15 mm root. Specimen were hand instrumented and obturated using gutta percha and AH plus root canal sealer. After storage period of two …

Blockchain applications in management: A bibliometric analysis and literature review

2021

Blockchain has gained substantial recognition for its ability to induce transformation and innovation in existing business models and frameworks. Consequently, the application of this technology to the management domain and its processes has attracted increasing interest from academia and industry. Although research addressing the use of blockchain in management has gained momentum, this field presents a discontinuous overview of the current scope and boundary of the knowledge thereon. This study addresses this lacuna using bibliometric analyses to synthesize the prior literature. Data from Scopus 586 articles, entailing contributions from 72 countries, 273 journals, 1016 organizations, and…

Microspectroscopy and spectromicroscopy with photoemission electron microscopy using a new kind of imaging energy filter

2001

The use of an imaging retarding field analyser attached to the FOCUS IS-PEEM is described. This kind of energy filter is a simple, powerful tool to obtain microspectra from areas of down to about 1 μm using (V)UV and X-ray excitation sources. First results of microspectroscopy measured by excitation with a laboratory as well as a synchrotron X-ray source are presented.

RTS2: Lessons learned from a widely distributed telescope network

2008

RTS2 (Remote Telescope System 2) is a highly modular open source telescope and observatory management software package. It evolved from RTS, which was developed in Python to control a telescope aimed at observing optical transients of γ ray burts. The development of a network system capable of operating robotic telescopes is both difficult and complicated. Along with continued software development one must be concerned with maintaining operations and obtaining results. This is a review of experiences gained building a network of robotic telescopes. It focuses on describing which issues are important during development of the robotic observatory software and requirements for future developme…

Hardware and software designing of USB based plug n play data acquisition device with C# and LabView compatibility

2015

As interdisciplinary sciences getting popular with every passing day, the need of electronic devices interfacing with a PC is also increasing. Very useful products (Arduino, RasberryPi, etc) made their way in commercial market to cater such needs however they require programming skills, specific IDE's (integrated development environments) and lack compatibility with useful tools such as NI (National Instrument) LabView[1] and C#. Since these two (C# and LabView) are supposed to be widely used for their user friendliness, but unfortunately are not prioritised as a development option due to lack of supporting hardware which is either too expensive, rare or too complex. Hence in this research …

Maxillary first molar with three mesiobuccal canals confirmed with spiral computer tomography

2012

Anatomic variations in root canal morphology have become easier to detect with the rapid advancements in clinical and diagnostic aids. Also an increased awareness of unusual anatomic morphology and a better understanding of the root canal system guides the clinician in diagnosis and treatment of such variations in order to achieve a successful endodontic outcome. Mesiobuccal root of first maxillary molar teeth have been considered to be one of the most complex and challenging root canal systems. This case report presents a successful management of a third canal in the mesiobuccal root of permanent maxillary first molar using dental operating microscope along with a modified access preparati…
