Coherent Electronic Coupling versus Localization in Individual Molecular Dimers

International audience; The electronic excitation transfer and coherent electronic coupling strength were investigated in molecular dimers by spectrally resolved confocal fluorescence spectroscopy. The direct probe of electronic coupling strength distribution was possible due to static disorder in polymer host by single molecule measurements. The dimers with delocalized excitation were also found in comparison to emission originated from localized states. The delocalized and localized state transitions were observed for dimers which were attributed to structural fluctuations of guest-host system.

Different approaches in sulfonated poly (ether ether ketone) conductivity measurements

Ion conductivity of sulfonated poly (ether ether ketone) (SPEEK) membranes with various degree of sulfonation (DS) was investigated using impedance analysis with different measuring cell configuration and ion conductivity was calculated from resistances of polymer membranes. SPEEK was synthesized from poly (ether ether ketone) (PEEK) via sulfonation reaction in concentrated sulfuric acid (95-98%). Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis of membrane surface was performed to determine possible mechanical damage to the membrane during resistance measurements.

PLLA/PLA scaffolds prepared via Thermally Induced Phase Separation (TIPS): tuning of properties and biodegradability

Foams for tissue engineering applications were prepared via thermally induced phase separation (TIPS). Poly-L-Lactic Acid (PLLA) and blends of PLLA with PLA in different proportions were used (100/0, 90/10, 75/25, 50/50, 0/100 PLLA/PLA wt/wt) starting from ternary systems where dioxane was the solvent and water the non-solvent. Morphology was evaluated by Scanning Electron Microscopy (average pore size and interconnection) and the void fraction was measured by means of Hg porosimetry. Foams apparent density was also evaluated (porosity ranges from 87% to 92%). Biodegradability was estimated in a body mimicking fluid. Cellulose-click-ferrocenes as docking spots for cyclodextrin

A novel synthesis of ferrocene-modified cellulose, prepared from 6-azido-6-deoxy-cellulose and ethynylferrocene, is presented. The two components were coupled via copper-catalyzed click-type cycloaddition under microwave-assisted conditions. The surface structure of the cellulose derivative was investigated in comparison with that of pure, microcrystalline cellulose using electron microscopy (scanning, transmission and scanning transmission), showing iron atoms of ferrocene as homogeneously distributed particles. Transmission of mechanical energy through polymeric liquid crystals and their blends

Molecular composites, also called polymeric liquid crystals (PLC), are contrasted with the traditional composites; the name heterogeneous composites is proposed for the latter. Advantages of blending PLCs with ordinary engineering polymers are discussed. Results reported for blends of poly(ethylene terepthalate) (PET) with a PLC containing sequences of PET and p-hydroxybenzoic acid (PHB) include thermophysical properties, melt rheology, mechanical properties of solid blends, and scanning electron microscopy of fracture surfaces. Identification of Manganese(IV) Centers in Archaeological Glass Using Microsample Coatings Attached to PolymerFilm Electrodes

Identification of MnO2 nodulae in archaeological glass by linear scan and differential pulse voltammetry using abrasive-conditioned microsamples attached to polymer film (Elvacite 2044) electrodes is described. Voltammetric responses for manganese-containing samples parallels to those obtained for β- and γ-MnO2 upon immersion of modified electrodes into NaCl, KCl and acetic/acetate aqueous media. The observed electrochemical response provides information on the open microporous structure of the MnO2 forms and the conditions of their formation during the weathering process of buried glass.

Functional templates for hybrid materials with orthogonal functionality.

We demonstrate an integrated approach to prepare a nanostructured, multifunctional material with mutually exclusive, orthogonal properties. The hybrid material was obtained within a single step via self-assembly in solution. It consists of TiO(2) as a functional metal oxide and an amphiphilic block copolymer, poly(ethylene oxide)-b-poly(triphenylamine) (PEO-PTPA). Within the materials' synthesis, the block copolymer not only acts as a templating agent but also adds an electronic functionality to the resulting hybrid material. Relationship between structure of drawn polymers and molecular motion

In order to study the relationship between structure and molecular motion, drawn polymers are more suitable than isotropic samples since their morphology can be characterized more easily by quantitative methods such as small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and electron microscopy (EM). The effects of changes in morphological structure on molecular motion are demonstrated by comparing the results of the SAXS and EM measurements with the dynamic mechanical behavior of drawn polyethylene. In addition the NMR broad line spectra of these samples were analyzed and the influence of annealing conditions and external stress was investigated.

Optical video microscopy and digital image processing have been used to study the self-diffusion of colloidal particles with a hard-sphere potential. The colloid particles consist of cross-linked polymers and are dispersed in a good solvent to avoid aggregation. Summary Changes in the microstructure of complex sulfide ores resulting from reactive thermal treatments in either H2 or N2 were investigated qualitatively by combined scanning electron microscopy and X ray microanalysis, and quantitatively by mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP) and mercury pycnometry.
