Towards the origin of the shear force in near-field microscopy
2001
The shear force from a gold or a graphite sample acting on an approaching near-field optical probe is studied in detail. The adiabatic and dissipative contributions to the force are clearly distinguished by monitoring the amplitude as well as the phase of the tip vibration when the tip approaches the surfaces. We also take into account that not only the damping and the resonance frequency but also the mass of the system changes when the tip approaches the surface. The relative strength of the contributions to the force varies differently but characteristically with the distance of the two samples, starting at a much larger distance in the case of graphite. The adiabatic contribution is lar…
The Application of Foreign Law by Judicial and Non-Judicial Authorities: Any News?
2020
The treatment of foreign law by judicial and non-judicial authorities constitutes “a crucial issue” for the proper functioning of any Private International Law (PIL) system. Nevertheless, and despite its relevance, international harmonization on this issue is scarce and old –usually, previous to 1980-, and it combines both a limited scope and little application. Thus, the nature granted to foreign law before national authorities, the way to ascertain its content or to consider when it has been sufficiently proved usually vary significantly among jurisdictions and negatively affect the potential application of foreign law. This situation is widespread. And it is even noticeable in a legally …
Spain: The Application of Foreign Laws in Spain – Critical Analysis of the Legal Novelties of 2015
2017
The Spanish system about treatment of foreign laws is regulated in different legal sources including the recent Act 29/2015 on International Legal Cooperation. The inconsistency between the mandatory nature of conflict of laws rules and the burden of parties of proving the foreign law makes the system unsatisfactory in the judicial scope whereas more flexible solutions -and consequently more satisfactory outcomes- can be evidenced in the non-judicial scope. This research approaches both scenarios from a legal and practical perspective and analyses the current solutions and some proposals of improvement.
Examination Technique of Confocal Laser Endomicroscopy
2007
The first publication about a confocal fluorescence microscope integrated into the distal tip of a conventional colonoscope (Pentax EC 3830FK, Tokyo, Japan) appeared in 2004 [1], showing that in vivo microscopy at subcellular resolution (0.7 µm) simultaneously displayed with white-light endoscopy had become possible. Today, endomicroscopy can be performed in the upper and lower GI tract [2]–[10]. This chapter deals with the examination technique of confocal laser endomicroscopy.

Imaging and force transduction in correlative scanning force and confocal fluorescence microscopy
2018
Correlative scanning force and confocal fluorescence microscopy has been used to study individual molecules, nanoparticles and nanoparticle oligomers. By applying a compressive force via the AFM cantilever, spectral blue and red shifts in the range of several meV/GPa have been observed for single dye molecules and semiconductor quantum dots. Moreover, individual Au nanoparticle dimers linked by a chlorophyll binding protein have been imaged in both modes and plasmonic fluorescence enhancement of the chlorophyll emission of up to a factor of 15 has been found.
Decision Support Systems Based on CLP Approach in SMEs
2006
The paper focuses on a selected class of decision problems related with the production flow planning in SMEs, particularly in new production orders. Verification of orders gives a possibility to evaluate whether resources capacity of a manufacturer is balanced with the orderer's requirements. The class of decision problems under analysis is included in the scope of organizational production preparation and can be naturally determined by available CLP (Constraint Logic Programming) tools. The approach proposed in the paper is based on establishment of an interface which facilitates its task oriented use. The system has been presented on the basis of a sample order execution in a manufacturer…
Production and Foreign Trade of Mineral Products in Latvia and Belarus
2015
Latvia and Belarus are small countries with limited scope of natural resources. However, the available mineral resources play important role in production of mineral products for domestic and foreign consumption. Main goal of the paper is to characterize the role of extraction industry in national economy and mineral products trade in two neighboring countries - Latvia and Belarus. To achieve the goal, the role of mining and quarrying industry in Latvia and Belarus was identified; trade of mineral resources in Latvia was analyzed. The main trends in the development of its own mineral resources of the Republic of Belarus were identified, the role of mineral resources in the commodity structu…
The Brave New World of development in the internetwork computing architecture (InterNCA): or how distributed computing platforms will change systems …
1998
This essay is a speculation of the impact of the next generation technological platform — the internetwork computing architecture (InterNCA) — on systems development. The impact will be deep and pervasive and more substantial than when computing migrated from closed computer rooms to ubiquitous personal computers and flexible client-server solutions. Initially, by drawing upon the notion of a technological frame, the InterNCA, and how it differs from earlier technological frames, is examined. Thereafter, a number of hypotheses are postulated with regard to how the architecture will affect systems development content, scope, organization and processes. Finally, some suggestions for where the…
